Gekkota is an infraorder of Lizards (Squamata) with a majority carnivore species. They are widely distributed and have members that live in subtropical and temperate climates all over the world, excluding Antarctica.

They are distinguished by a distinct set of toe pads that are adhesive which have been proven to be specifically designed for the arboreal motion. These pads are highly developed and consist of an array of scales with tiny protrusions that look like hairs. They can be found at the base of your toes. Setae self-clean and eliminate any dirt that is clogging them within a few steps.

Geckoes have a broad range of limb morphologies that are connected to ecological specialisation. This is evident in the presence of sticky pads that allow climbing and claws that are specially designed. These limbs can be modified in order to adapt to the demands of the environment. Some geckoes have modified claws to climb, while others have claws specially designed for swimming and acrobatic behaviour.

We utilized five nuclear protein-coding genes to conduct maximum parsimony as well as maximum likelihood analyses to identify phylogenetic relationships among gekkotan Lizards. Our study identified a monophyletic transatlantic gecko clan called Phyllodactylidae. It encompassed the genera Asaccus and Haemodracon as well as Tarentola, Thecadactylus, Ptyodactylus and Tarentola.

The genera were discovered to be closely related to Amalosia and Nebulifera that are members of a plesiomorphic family of generalized geckos that reside mostly on the ground or in trees. Oliver et. al.'s theory is confirmed by these results. (2012) Nebulifera, Amalosia and Hesperoedura represent a subclade of a plesiomorphic genus of geckos with an emphasis on acrobatic behavior.

These results indicate that gekkotan geckos have limb morphology that was originally developed for acrobatic activities. Consequently, they are able to climb higher and faster than their ancestors.

This key finding is crucial to understanding the evolutionary history and the development of gekkotan Lizards. It suggests that their limbs underwent significant plasticity as a result of changes in their environment. This is a useful quality for animals that adapt to changes over time.

Our study is the very first comprehensive assessment of morphological and developmental features in geckos from the gekkotan species. It reveal that their limbs have been well-developed to meet diverse habitat demands and to prevent injuries while moving. We also find a variety of key developmental and functional features that are shared by these geckos, providing insights into the evolution of their highly adaptive limbs.

To understand the fundamental behavior and developmental mechanisms, we have developed an innovative developmental staging table for gekkotan geckos to help understand the underlying mechanisms behind their behaviour and development. The stage-based system of morphological development combines in-ovo embryonic development and a suite of indicators for development to determine developmental stages during the beginning of the development process when the lizard is still in its young stage.

The staging table is built on morphological characters and is a precise and reliable method for determining the age of Lizards. It is useful for predicting the potential of a species to reproduce successfully in the wild, and also to evaluate its reproductive performance in the captive environment. It is also used to identify key developmental milestones , and also to evaluate how the population of a species adjusts to changes in the environment.
