IOC 141st General Assembly opens... Kim Jae-yeol, Chairman of the Ice Skating Federation, elected new members on the 16th

The 141st General Assembly held by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Mumbai, India will begin with the Executive Committee meeting on the 12th (Korean time).

The Executive Committee, the de facto highest decision-making body composed of 15 members, will be held from the 12th to the 14th, and the general meeting attended by all IOC members will continue for three days from the 15th to the 17th.

The IOC will elect new members through voting at the final meeting of the general meeting on the 16th.

Kim Jae-yeol (54), president of the International Skating Union (ISU) and president of the Samsung Economic Research Institute, was named as one of eight new member candidates recommended by the IOC Executive Committee last September.

If a new member is elected at the general meeting, unless there is an emergency, Chairman Kim will become the 12th Korean IOC member in history.

Samsung Group, who served as an IOC member, he plans to continue the Samsung family and exert influence on the international sports stage.

Along with the election of new members, another major agenda item of this general meeting is the confirmation of the official events for the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Summer Olympics.

The LA Olympic Organizing Committee proposed to the IOC that it adopt five additional sports, including baseball, softball, flag football, cricket, lacrosse, and squash, to the 28 basic sports already confirmed.

Baseball and softball, which are popular in the United States, the host country of the LA Olympics, are aiming to return as official sports seven years after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held in 2021, and cricket is aiming to return as an official sport 128 years after the 1900 Paris Olympics.

Breaking, which will debut as an official event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, will be excluded from the 2028 LA, and the three traditional sports - boxing, weightlifting, and modern pentathlon - that have had conflicts with the IOC over financial transparency and competition management methods are also at risk of being kicked out.

The 28 basic sports of the LA Olympics are swimming, archery, track and field, badminton, basketball, canoeing, cycling, horseback riding, fencing, soccer, golf, artistic gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, rowing, rugby, sailing, shooting, skateboarding,

These are sport climbing, surfing, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, and wrestling.

After the invasion of Ukraine, the IOC cleared the way for athletes from Russia and Belarus, the country that assisted the invasion, to compete to secure qualification to the 2024 Paris Olympics, but has not made a final decision on whether they will be able to compete in the actual Olympics.

The recognition of the ROC as an entity is expected to be decided in conjunction with the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2028 LA Olympics.
