The sash is an interior frame that is able to move upwards and downwards in windows that are open. This article will show you how to make several easy repairs to your sash.
Weather Stripping
Wood window sashes provide an elegant look to your home. When properly maintained, can last for a long time. However, they can become damaged or degraded with time due to exposure and normal wear. Sash repair experts can restore windows to their original state and keep them looking great longer than replacement windows.
Weather stripping is the most important thing to address when repairing sash windows. It is located on both the frame and the sash. If it's loose or worn out, it could cause drafts, as well as other issues. To fix it, start by determining the brand of your window and the date on which the glass was manufactured (etched in the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacer between panes). Then, take the sash off and mark its height and width to find replacement weather stripping to match.
Then, remove the sash from its holder and place it on flat surfaces to allow you to see all four sides. If the sash is double-hung, you'll need to take off the weights and their accompanying ropes that should have fallen into the intended pocket in the jamb liner. Once you've taken the sash off and the weights, use a utility knife to remove the weather stripping that was formerly in place at the corners, and then take it off by hand or using a putty knife.
Once the sash is clear, you can replace the parting stops. These are long pieces that split the sashes. Pam prefers to use the standard 1/2-inch by 3/4-inch window trimming from the lumberyard. However, you could substitute for a scrap piece of lumber.
After removing the stoppers for parting and trimming them to your desired length and thickness, apply a thin layer of glazing compound on the bottom of the sash. Smooth it out using your putty knife, and then let it dry for at least a few days. When it's completely dried and dried, apply a second coat of acrylic latex paint. This coating will protect the putty and give your sash a new look.
Sash Hardware

Old windows, particularly those in older homes, may be difficult to open and close, because of sagging hinges and an overall inefficiency. Many times just a few easy fixes can help these windows function smoothly again and save homeowners money on energy costs.
It is important to have the tools you need before you begin. Begin by marking the location of the hinge channel on the frame using pencil (Photo 1). This will help you get the channel back on place correctly when you're finished. Remove the sash and take out all the hardware including the parting beads, cords, and chains that help to hold the sash. The nozzle shield of the heat gun and a medium setting will soften any hardened glue. Remove the old sash, and store it in a bag with a label.
Sash Weights
If your window sash repairs are to replace a damaged cord or simply to keep your windows functioning and functional, replacing worn-out weights for sash will improve its operation and help reduce the energy cost. Sash weights consist of heavy iron or lead cylinders that are enclosed in a hidden cavity and attached by ropes to the movable window sash. These weights provide counterbalance which allows the window to be shut and opened without the need for mechanical or electrical devices. When they fail, sashweights are usually neglected or not used by homeowners.
It's not easy to retrieve an sash-weight which has fallen from the cavity, so you'll need to find one that fits correctly. You will also require a new piece of string, a length sashcord and a few sashpulleys to secure the weights you are replacing to the cord.
Older windows made of wood are joined with mortise and tenon joints. Pin punch and hammer can be used to take out the wood pegs holding the parts together. The majority of these pegs are big on one side, and smaller on the other. It is essential to first remove the smaller diameter sides. Sashes that were made later in the century used glue instead of pegs. They can be separated by cutting through the glue line with an instrument, and then tapping the mortised part loose with a mallet.
After the sash is removed and removed, you can take off the sash stop and gain access to the weight pocket. Usually, this is done through a hole near the bottom of each jamb. The hole is then covered with a wooden access panel which can be removed to allow you to view the inside of the frame.

To replace sash cords the first step is to remove the access panels from the jambs. These are usually installed by screws or nails and will need to be removed or relocated. You might be able to use a hammer or chisel to remove them, but it's always better to lay down dust sheets before starting any work.
After you have removed the access panel, you can begin to work on the sash. Take the narrow beads (also known as "tie rails") out of their grooves using the chisel or flat bar. It is important to be patient, as these are often stuck or nailed to the floor. If the sash is still in place, break the mortise-and-tenon joints out with a hammer or screwdriver, then remove each wood peg. You should be able to move the sash back and forth freely, though it might require oiling if it seems stiff.
Take a measurement of the length of the sash chain or sash cord needed to reach the sash slot on the bottom of the pulley at the top of the jamb. Cut the cord/chain, and then secure it in Step 6 above. You can use a hammer, nails, or screws. However nails are less likely than screws to cause damage.
It is recommended to keep the weights that came with the original counterbalance unless you've purchased a kit to replace the old counterbalance. They're not expensive and easy to install if you buy them at architectural salvage stores. Based on the size of your window, two or three sash weights may be needed to keep the sash in an open position.
