Fae of the Land + Sky

Bird Folk
  • Wings/feathers are essential to the idea of self for all Bird Folk (even the ones uncapable of flight).
  • Majority are monogamous
  • The way that they are able to connect to Faerie + have the ability to use glamour (this highly depends on the percentage of fae blood they have. More equals more magical abilities. Vice versa.) is through their wings. Having them removed can be quite traumatizing due to the separation from their homeland and magical abilities. Also the fact many are quite used to the ability to fly and having that taken may result in confusion and physical health problems.
  • Flock-Oriented vs. Non-Flock-Oriented
    • Flock-Oriented
      • these Folk are very social and tend to hang out in groups, large or small, with others of their own species although there have been documented cases of different types together.
      • There are many different reasons for flocking behavior some of which being
        • Migration
        • Safety
        • General social interactions (this can be extremely healthy for this type of Bird Folk)
        • Basic needs
    • Non-Flock-Oriented
      • Folk within this group tend to be non-social, prefer to be alone, and independent.
      • Predatory Bird Folk are usually within this category
        • Ex. Hawks, Eagles, Owls
  • Predatory vs. Prey
    • Predatory
      • Main diet consists of meat (most of them are omnivores or scavengers)
      • Scavengers are frowned upon due to their natural inclination toward rotting meat (leading to many hiding it/eating other stuff)
      • Aggressive, leans toward violence
    • Prey
      • Diet mainly of greens (Omnivores though)
      • Passive, clean
  • Common Customs:
    • Folk are known to put aside a few hours to preen their wings
    • when one dies, they are known to request to be 'defeathered'. The feathers are gathered from their wings through a long and tedious process which consists of loosening the skin. Then the feathers are collected and made into clothing pieces and given to their loved ones.
      • ex. Batu having his feathers made into a wedding dress for his eldest daughter
    • Feathers that have fallen off are able to be used as jewelry or decorations (Forcefully pulling feathers off are frowned upon)
    • Messing with the feathers can cause flight issues, the young are taught early on not to mess around with them
    • Do not touch places on the wings that can lead to them seeing thou as a mate (ex. base of wings)
    • All of them are extremely loyal to their loved ones (platonic and romantic)
  • Moulting
    • Depends on species, they either throw these molted feathers away or use them in fashion (sometimes sells them in the case of Crystal Eagle Folk)
  • Fashion
    • Many tops have holes to allow wings to pass through
    • There are wing warmers for Bird Folk during those cold winters
    • Dying the wings extravagant colors are quite common
  • Examples of two different Bird Folk :
    • Golden Eagle Folk
  • Folk of this species can be quite obedient. Which is why they are usually bodyguards or taking up jobs of that sort.
    - One must be patient with them and have an understanding of their prominent anger issues.
  • Known to never leave their partner unless they die; however, if their partner dies, they take up a new one as quickly as possible
  • Having a mate is essential to survival (dependency both emotionally + physically)
  • Food is highly valued in their community.
  • Since they were known to eat prey without separating edible from non-edible these Folk have a gallbladder (like a lot of Predatory Bird Folk) which save the things that were not digestible to be disposed of later through other means.
    • Dove Folk
  • Considered to be religious symbols, treated highly in the community.
    • confused with half angels due to their shared characteristic of having wing ears
  • They love the warm sun regularly sunbathing
  • Another thing they enjoy is splashing around in water
  • Parenting taken seriously
  • Shifting
    • Although this ability is a bit more rarer in newer generations, it is still quite prominent.
    • They do not take on the regular size of birds, instead gigantic versions of it with human like faces. Keeping this form is tiring and cannot be maintained for long periods of time.
    • Folk without their wings are not able to transform if they had the ability to do so before hand.
    • Shifting isn't needed as much anymore due to the development of society.
