A Ramble about 'DEUS SOY' by 8 8 4 2

Illuminated Paths is largely considered to be the worst vaporwave label on the Internet, and they are prideful of that fact, but sometimes they surprise me with interesting content. For example, with the album ‘DEUS SOY’, which is a collaboration album with artists BOSEBY & Ethernetmind. I get notifications about every new Illuminated Paths album release, but I mostly swipe them away without much thought. ‘DEUS SOY’, however, was an exception. For some reason, during the middle of the day, I decided to start listening to the newly released ‘DEUS SOY’.

This article is going to be an analysis of the album ‘DEUS SOY’, but not in the way you think. Most album reviews focus on music, but in this case, there isn’t much to talk about. ‘DEUS SOY’ creates a rather unique and futuristic soundscape, but nothing I could go into detail writing about. So instead, I’m going to be analyzing the story and scenario of ‘DEUS SOY’. The description for the album is as follows:

'THIS WORLD WE DESTROY TO CREATE A PARADISE RULED BY SOY.' - 8842

Civilization had been saved by the GOD OF SOY.
Endless war and territorial disputes ceased; every hierarchy discarded.
No longer burdened by the consumption of Animal Flesh, humanity thrives unabated - infinite population growth is sustained by an ultra-intelligent general population teeming with hyper advanced technology. Everyone parties and mates endlessly, without regard for scarcity. The encapsulation of the planet by a gargantuan solar energy shell provides an endless supply of electrical power to the populace partying without end.

This description made me laugh at first, but then I realized that it would make for a very interesting analysis. At first glance, I notice this album is a dystopian one, despite the fact that civilization had supposedly been SAVED by the god of soy. I am unsure whether the God Of Soy is supposed to represent an actual God, or if it is supposed to be a concept, showing that the superfood of soy in this society is worshiped like a God. It seems most likely that the God Of Soy is some form of tyrant who took over society and destroyed everything to create a paradise of soy.

Either way, all conflicts ceased because of the God Of Soy, and nobody was oppressed anymore. The description mentions that because society was no longer burdened by the consumption of animals, humanity was thriving. This seems to be hinting at the real-world fact that by going plant-based, we could save a lot of resources that could be put to work elsewhere. So in a way, I appreciate this album for raising awareness for a good cause. But anyways, let’s get back into this album story.

Now that the world has been saved by the God Of Soy, everybody could do whatever they wanted, which turns out to be partying and mating endlessly without regard for scarcity. The massive growth in population caused by people mating 100 times every night was not of concern, because the general population was super intelligent and able to overcome any obstacle using hyper-advanced technology such as a massive supply of solar energy.

Finally, every single problem in society was solved. There was no more room for improvement. However, this is exactly the reason ‘DEUS SOY’ became a dystopia. Because nobody had any problems or conflicts, and everything was 100% efficient, there was nothing left to solve, nothing left to do. Boredom was starting to kick in.

People are designed to do work. Without doing work, or at least busywork to fill the time, we will eventually drive ourselves mad. Since there is no work to do in ‘DEUS SOY’, this creates a conflict in this conflict-free world. To solve this conflict, people had to do something, so they decided to party and mate without end, receiving pleasure from sexual gratification, bean curds, and beat drops.

For a while, this may seem like a good way to live, until you realize how repetitive and boring partying and mating without end would be. I love concerts, but there is a reason I wouldn’t want to go to every single concert that exists, because then the experience would no longer be something special. Since people in ‘DEUS SOY’ are constantly partying, they grow bored of the experience after some time.

Along with getting bored, this ultra-intelligent general population will not exist in future generations. Because nobody is concerned with education, because all they do is party, they won't teach future generations about problem solving. There are no problems to solve, remember? So the ultra-intelligent population will become extinct. Nobody will know how to do anything, everybody will essentially become stupid. So we can forget anything about an ultra-intelligent general population, because it would likely not exist in a few decades.

I am going to make up a scenario now to explain why ‘DEUS SOY’ is not a healthy society, in case it isn’t already obvious. People in ‘DEUS SOY’ are mating 100 times every night; I won’t question how that is possible. What I will question, however, is what happens to the offspring? Given the fact that “infinite population growth” was mentioned, I am going to assume that ‘DEUS SOY’ citizens do not use contraceptives. That means there will be a lot of babies. Since people in ‘DEUS SOY’, when not mating, are doing nothing but partying, they likely don’t know anything at all about child development. Perhaps there are a few citizens who take care of babies for ‘DEUS SOY’ citizens, but then I must question how they are being treated.

The society of ‘DEUS SOY’ is sort of like unintended censorship. All of the citizens are very sheltered to life in general. If people are in fact just constantly partying, they are likely blind to what issues may be occurring in society. Anyone could do any terrible thing, and everyone would be way too distracted and uneducated to know that what was being done was wrong.

If the God Of Soy indeed acts as a government, this is the perfect situation in which to manipulate citizens. Full power is granted to the God Of Soy, and everybody would be powerless to try to overthrow them, due to a lack of education, and a Stockholm syndrome of knowing nothing other then the life of partying. So ironically, this causes oppression, without the group being oppressed even thinking about it.

Even if the God Of Soy is not oppressive, the existence of the citizens would quickly become mundane. Doing nothing but partying led to them becoming happiness zombies, living off the sexual gratification of mating, causing even more citizens to be born into this mundane existence of partying without end.

Overall, a perfect utopia will always become a dystopia. However, the world of ‘DEUS SOY’ is incredibly unrealistic, so I don’t fear something like it ever happening in the real world. I believe there will always continue to be problems in the world, and we will always have conflict and an endless supply of concerns. We can, however, always work to make the world a better place then it was yesterday.
