DIVINE DECAY LORE INFORMATION

An Introduction

Setting

Time Period

5th Era. 5025 years after Somnuros last breathed. Akin to the High Middle Ages.

The World of Primortis

Thousands of years ago, Somnuros, the God-That-Was, died. Its corpse sank into the land, where moss overtook bone and flesh rotted away. Now millions dwell atop its remains in Primortis, a land ruled by the feudal kingdom of Osverna. The capital, Eternavox, sits in the curve of the god’s jawbone. Massive ribs pierce the sky, sinew clings to mossy bone, and the skeletons of demigods litter the wilds.

Osverna is divided among seven noble Houses, each ruled by a Greater Lord, and governed by the Sovereign, a monarch crowned with the Briarcrown—a living diadem that grants divine power or rejects the unworthy. The crown withers after 30 years, and with it, the Sovereign dies.
Magic runs through Osverna’s people—fleshweaving, naturecraft, and other inherited gifts. Most are human, but dryads, sirens, satyrs, and other nature-aligned beings exist.

The God

Somnuros, or the God-That-Was, died 5,782 years ago. It existed in a dormant state for several centuries where it slowly succumbed to its wounds. It is unknown why, but all mentions of the god’s true name were long ago struck from written records. Its corpse has mostly decayed, leaving only bone, but some portions are magically preserved. The only remnant of its flesh which has been miraculously preserved due to no magical influence is now housed in Vernamoor's Inner Sanctum, referred to as The Firstbloom. Little is known about this mysterious god, and the name "Somnuros" is merely a placeholder for its true name, now lost to time.

Parts of the god's preserved body serve as infrastructure (tendon bridges, towns carved from rib bones) while others exist as natural wonders (the throat canyon). Still others are visited for religious pilgrimages (the massive preserved heart in The Sacred Cage).

Alternate Names: The Bonefather, The Fallen One, The Withered, The Sanctified Remnant, The Sacred Remains

Recent History

The Civil War of 5017

The Civil War of 5017 was sparked when a visiting Ulna noble was killed on Radia’s border after a century of rising tension. Radia and Ulna fought for years until Sovereign Maximus Martonis intervened, demanding compromise through his diplomats. When peace talks failed, he threatened military force, giving both sides one last chance. War-weary, they yielded within weeks, and a truce was struck—though rumors lingered that Radia sought independence from Osverna. Maximus died in 5020 at 49, shortly after ending the war, beloved for his grace and leadership. His son Vespasian, age 28, succeeded him and was crowned Sovereign.

After peace, Ulna and House Ironvale stayed loyal to the Crown, but House Sanguithorn of Radia nursed resentment. When famine drove Radia’s peasants to revolt, Lord Sanguithorn deflected their anger. From his balcony he told the mob: “Do not strike at me. Head north, to he who wears a crown of thorns. There lies the cause of your barren fields and empty wells.” This later led to the peasant rebellions.

The Peasant Rebellion

In 5020, following the civil war and ensuring famine, peasants of Radia marched north to the capital Eternavox to petition, but were turned back—sparking uprisings across other dominions. In his first year, Sovereign Vespasian panicked, unleashing the military to crush dissent. Violence dragged on for two years until he resorted to mass executions of all suspected rebels. Thousands died—peasants, merchants, knights, nobles, even his own brother. When the mourning ended, peace returned, bought at a terrible cost.

Current Political Climate

Ulna is laying low and licking its wounds, House Sanguithorn of Radia was nearly exiled until the former lord's brother stepped in. The southern provinces remain wild and divorced from the northern tensions, though crime continues to flourish in Femoreth. Many nobles consider Vespasian a hero, while most peasants view him as a butcher. He is attempting to appease them through careful diplomacy and clever political manuevers.

Royalty

The Sovereign

The Sovereign is Osverna’s absolute ruler, crowned during a ritual in which the Briarcrown—a living thorned diadem—either accepts or kills them. If accepted, the Sovereign reigns for 30 years, after which death is certain.

They rule from the Sanctum Carnis, aided by the Council of Thorns, a powerful advisory and governing body. Succession may follow bloodline or personal nomination. If the Sovereign dies without naming an heir, the Council elects the next ruler. Pressure to marry and produce heirs begins soon after coronation.

Vespasian Martonis is Osverna's 201st Sovereign in his fifth year of rule. His Briarcrown is withering faster than usual, indicating that due to his particularly ruthless actions, reckless spending, and disregard for his future, his reign may be cut short.

Sovereign Abilities

Invincibility: The Sovereign’s Powers stem from the Briarcrown, granting 30 years of divinely-imbued invincibility—immune to dying of aging, illness, poison, and mortal harm. Physical traits are enhanced: speed, endurance, and agility far beyond human limits. This protection only ends if the crown withers or passes judgment. Rumors exist of a forbidden poison which can bypass the Briarcrown's protection, perhaps stemming from the Rootmother tree itself. Many Sovereigns have attempted to extend their lives before, but all have failed.

Plant Manipulation: Must be on an existing plant. Can stall or accelerate growth. If it grows from the ground, it can be manipulated.

Bodily Attunement: Influence over physiological states in self and others—sense emotion, alter heartbeat, still breath, or heighten sensation.

The Sovereign’s power waxes and wanes as they go through the Phases of Decay:

  • Waxing Phase: (Years 1-5) Power grows
  • Divinity Phase: (Years 6-24) Power is fully developed
  • Waning Phase: (Years 25-28) Power decreases
  • Decay Phase: (Years 29-30) Power dims to almost nothing

The Briarcrown

The Briarcrown is a crown made of twisted branches which have permanently fused to the Sovereign’s head since the coronation ceremony. It cannot be removed. It is the Sovereign’s source of power and pulses with divine energy. When it withers after 30 years, the Sovereign dies with it.

It is magically forged in the forbidden walled garden city of Vernamoor, woven by the elusive Dawnweavers. A new crown is woven for each Sovereign, and Sovereigns are buried with the withered remains of their crowns.

The Briarcrown is a living entity which may accept or reject its wearer when first placed atop the head. The crown pulses with divine energy when it deems the Sovereign worthy, but if not, it will sprout thorns and pierce straight through the wearer’s skull, causing an agonizing death. If the Sovereign commits grave crimes or blasphemy during their reign, the Briarcrown may also kill. It is the only confirmed way to kill a Sovereign.

Later in the Sovereign’s reign, the Briarcrown will change its appearance based on the Sovereign’s qualities and actions. For instance, a lively Sovereign’s Briarcrown may sprout daisies, or a regal and imposing Sovereign’s Briarcrown may grow stag antlers. A peaceful Sovereign’s Briarcrown may grow olive branches.

The Phases of Decay

The Sovereign’s thirty year rule can be divided into four phases:

WAXING PHASE: Years 1-5

  • The Sovereign is chosen
  • The Briarcrown is woven by the Dawnweavers and placed atop the Sovereign’s head at the coronation, granting invincibility.
  • The Sovereign’s power is still growing and not at its full potential

DIVINITY PHASE: Years 6-24

  • The Sovereign puts into practice their new policies. Ideally, a mini golden age occurs.
  • This is the height of their magical, political, and physical prowess.

WANING PHASE: Years 25-28

  • Strange omens begin to surface—shifts in weather, wild magic, dissent.
  • The Briarcrown begins to decay.
  • The Sovereign begins to weaken, manifesting in magical, emotional, or physical instability. Some embrace it, others resist.

DECAY PHASE: Years 29-30

  • The Sovereign’s magic dims until it is barely visible.
  • Political instability. The next Sovereign is the blood heir, someone the Sovereign chooses, or by the Council’s vote.
  • On the Eve of Decay, the Briarcrown withers and the Sovereign dies. Preparations begin for the next coronation.
  • A new ruler must be chosen within 100 days, else a lesser version of the Sovereign’s powers passes to a random host.

Locations

Eternavox - The Capital City

Eternavox is the cosmopolitan and devout capital city of Osverna and the home to the palace of Sanctum Carnis, from which the Sovereign reigns. It is built along the massive curve of the god’s lower jawbone and is home to 100,000 people.

Vernamoor - The Walled Garden

Vernamoor is a mysterious walled garden city in the southern region of the lush Sacral Plains, part of the Dominion of Mirevess. It is ruled by the Matriarch, a masked woman and retired Dawnweaver. The front gates open only to those who possess a fresh drop of Vernal blood, meaning those born within Vernamoor may enter, or those who have been given the Matriarch’s blessing. She blesses few, and listens to the whispers of the city itself to determine if the newcomer should be granted permanent access. This is a rare event. Not even the Sovereign may bypass it.

Those who attempt to enter will be at the mercy of the Paladins of Vernamoor, but should they fail, the curling vines which hold the front gate closed will attack intruders themselves. Nature itself assists in guarding this sacred place.

The city has a small civilian population, a paladin guard force, and the Inner Sanctum is home to the Dawnweavers, makers of the Briarcrown.

  • Notes: House Saltorix also runs the South Osverna Shipping Company, headed by Hadrian Saltorix.

Lesser Houses

Several hundred Lesser Houses rule over smaller regions of land within each Dominion. Each is subject to a Greater Lord and must swear fealty, lest their lands be confiscated. Each region may also be broken down into smaller lands owned by knights.

Example Lesser Houses: Bonesinger, Rictus, Wyrmwell, Umbra, Florasyne, Ivanell

Factions

The Council of Thorns

The Council of Thorns serves as a governing body directly beneath the Sovereign. They are advisors, and thus are noted for their wisdom and/or specialty in a given field. High-ranking members fill governmental roles as ministers. Councilors must be over the age of 30, and able to prove direct descent from a noble line. They are directly appointed by the Sovereign, who may add or remove them at will. There is no set number, but it hovers around 50 members. The Council is predominantly male, but this is a custom rather than a rule.

Favoritism plays a major role in who serves on the Council. Many families attempt to earn the Sovereign’s favor, pushing for one of their own to earn a seat on the Council. Often, the same families remain in power for centuries unless a major political shift occurs.

  • The Inner Circle: Seven members, one from each of the Sevenfold (Greater Houses). Closest to the Sovereign.
  • The Outer Circle: The remaining members, from both Greater and Lesser Houses

The Order of the Rose

The Order of the Rose is a knightly order that directly serves the needs of the Sovereign and acts as an honor guard. Only knights of the highest caliber are permitted to serve. Their purpose is to guard the Sovereign and to serve as an example of chivalry. Their number varies from 20-40 on average, but has been over 100 at times, and as few as 5. Led by Helanthor Pollux.

In reality, the Order of the Rose consists of imperfect people. Many times, the Roses are little more than drunken revelers who abuse their power.

They reside in the Domus Rosarium, a glass-and-marble cathedral which rests atop the bones of all previous Knights of the Rose who died with honor.

Their armor is pale silver with the Order’s sigil upon the chest: a crimson rose with a sword piercing through it. During formal events or ceremonies, they wear a crimson sash. All are given an ornamental sword after swearing their oath of fealty.

Dawnweavers

The Dawnweavers are an all-female order of life mages who are entrusted to take branches of the Rootmother (the oldest tree in Primortis) and weave them into the Briarcrown for the next Sovereign. They guard the Rootmother and the Firstbloom at its core, which contains the last remnant of the god’s untainted flesh.

The Ledger

The Ledger is a masked figure who dwells in the Catacombs beneath the capital city Eternavox, never showing his true identity. Acts as a broker, supplying contracts to assassins—independents or groups—without lasting alliances. Many work exclusively with him due to his reliability and perfect payment record. The process is simple: request work, choose a job, complete it. Anyone marked by The Ledger is doomed; failed contracts are finished by his Taskmasters, who also punish those who falter. Operating for over a century, he is almost certainly more than one person. He never carries out killings himself, serving only as a middleman.

The Ledger's Taskmasters

Taskmasters are The Ledger’s enforcers, taking unclaimed jobs and punishing assassins who fail contracts. Failure means steep payment at best, death at worst. Many are veteran assassins who proved themselves until The Ledger offered permanent employment. They serve as spies (tracking contractors, sourcing new work), debt collectors (ensuring clients pay up), and fixers who ensure The Ledger’s reputation remains unbroken.

South Osverna Shipping Company

The South Osverna Shipping Company was founded 200+ years ago, based in the bustling port town Levetau, in the dominion Femoreth. Currently owned by Lord Hadrian Saltorix, brother of Femoreth's High Lord Lucan Saltorix. Was acquired thirty-five years ago after the Saltorix family's coup. Runs fleets of cargo ships to Osverna's trade routes. Rumored to be rife with corruption and illegal activities, particularly smuggling luxury goods. One of the most profitable trade companies in Osverna.

Still, the Shipping Company is the pride of Levetau and employs thousands of sailors, clerks, and dockhands while keeping the city's coffers full. Lord Hadrian ensures it runs like clockwork.

The Fermata

A troupe of bards, performers, dancers, courtesans, and other entertainers. Prestigious and selective, initiates undergo a lengthy audition process lasting half a year. All members wear masks, so their appearance does not distract from their performance. Popular among Osvernan nobility. Individuals are hired for parties or small gatherings, while groups attend balls or large events.

Unknown to all but a select few, the Fermata operates as a spy network, occasionally dabbling in thievery and assassinations. Even newer members of the Fermata are unaware.

Customs

Naming Conventions

  • Greek or Latin origin
  • Floral or plant words
  • Body parts or organs using medical terminology
  • Typical fantasy names or words

Name examples: Fauna Marrowthorn, Phaedra Mortis, Rook Valewell, Moth Yarrowbell, Myrrha Silvanthis, Calyx Thanatos

Knighthood

Knights are held to lofty standards of virtue and physical ability. They have mastery over all forms of agility and combat, as well as courtly manners and land management. Social standing - above the merchant class, below nobility. Highest ranking knight orders considered noble.

Many knights began training since childhood as a page, then a squire. Others were knighted for good deeds or martial skill.

Osverna contains hundreds of knight orders, each with distinct armor and heraldry. The Order of the Rose is the most elite, but others include: The Sunguard, The Gilded Briar, The Order of Ash and Ivy, The Verdant Vigil, The Sanguine Pact

The Knights Code of Chivalry

All knights are expected to uphold the ten laws of chivalry. Less of a set of laws, and more of a code of honor. Interpretations vary. Those who fail to uphold the code and its virtues may be dismissed, but offenses are often covered up or ignored.

1: Defend the god’s honor and keep the faith
2: Defend the Sovereign
3: Respect and defend the weak
4: Act in the Osverna’s best interest
5: Stand strong against the enemy
6: Strike down those who threaten Osverna
7: Perform all duties associated with knighthood
8: Do not lie, cheat, or steal
9: Give generously
10: Champion good over evil
