Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Bentley's bespoke coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed a unique keycase to celebrate the brand's centenary. It is constructed of Dark stained Walnut with Piano Black Veneer and includes a fluttering "B" paperweight, keys, and an unreleased booklet with 1930s 8 Litre images.

This is a great way to welcome a new car owner.

Aesthetics

Bentley is a company that takes its aesthetics seriously. It is evident in the precise positioning of its quilting, the selection of leather from the by-products of cattle, timber from forests that are sustainably managed and the unique patterns on its levers. When you drive by a car like the Continental GT W12, its exquisite design is revealed through carefully selected lighting.

The Continental GT is the most sophisticated open-top Bentley ever made. The rear tonneau, for example, showcased the largest piece of book-matched, dark-stained Burr Walnut veneer ever applied to a production Bentley. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

Bentley is the most sought-after car brand in the world due to its unique design and craftsmanship. The company continues to push the boundaries with the latest technologies and hand-crafted products. This includes the introduction of an electronic tilt-opening rear window sunroof and a handcrafted Apple iPad docking station.

A century after its inception, Bentley - now under sole Volkswagen ownership after years of conflict with BMW was able to celebrate its centennial in the year 2019. Prior to pandemic planning taking the center stage, the company held a series of special events and launches planned to mark this milestone event.

Design

Bentley is famous for its extravagant and lavish cars and keys, but even keys are designed to make a statement. The Bentayga key is made from sterling silver. It features an oversized 'B' logo that let everyone know that you're a Bentley. The key is also decorated with the years 1919 and 2019, to mark the company’s centenary.

The Mulsanne was redesigned and developed by Bentley Mulliner, to be the ultimate Grand Touring car. The rear seats were designed to provide passengers with unmatched comfort and privacy. They were inspired by the luxury private aircraft. The custom heating and ventilation as well as air conditioning system was developed to give every passenger the ideal temperature control.

In addition to a suite of exquisitely executed styling tweaks The Mulsanne is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre W12 engine that produces 560bhp and 479lbft of torque. This power is paired with a new suspension system that offers Bentley's signature smooth ride.

Bentley has introduced a special specification for cars built after the year 2019 in order to celebrate its centenary. This is known as the Centenary Specification. The cabin is equipped with cross-stitching and contrast stitching in Centenary Gold throughout. The Bentley Wings on the headrests and seats are embroidered with Centenary Gold, adding to the sense of celebration. A bespoke Bentley key case is also included in the Centenary Specification, making the Bentley experience all-inclusive.

Function

The Bentley Mulsanne Key comes with two buttons one of which opens the trunk, and the other which starts the vehicle. The key also has a switch for turning on the parking brake. There is a knob to fold and unfold the mirrors while parking in tight spots. This feature makes it easier to get in and out of your car.

Each key takes about two days to create. The key is cut by hand, then shaped, sewed and sealed, then polished to produce a premium result. It is lightweight and durable and matches the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is akin to the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key however it feels heavier and has a more premium feel.

Secure-A-Key is also included to protect against keyless entry theft. This device is put into the remote-control fob, and is disabled when the key isn't used for more than a few minutes. It blocks thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices which can unlock and start the vehicle.

Bentley's distinctive style reflects the company's values of fine craftsmanship and engineering expertise as well as modern technology. Its headquarters in Crewe are home to over 4,000 workers who are responsible for the development, design and production of Bentley vehicles. These workers apply skills that have been passed through generations to modern automotive technology. This is a characteristic of British manufacturing at its best.

Personalisation

Bentley's Mulliner division allows customers to design their car. The "mood station" allows guests to select images that inspire them. These could range from picturesque vistas to sporting events. As each selection is made, a pattern appears and reveals the model and color preferences for the personalized Bentley.

The guests are given keys made by hand and containing the R.F.I.D. enabled key cards. The keys can also be outfitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised Welcome Lamps that light up the door's opening path with the owner's name or logo when they arrive at the vehicle.

Bentley estimates that it takes around 500 man-hours to design and assemble the average Mulsanne. The main reason for this lengthy effort is a deliberate decision to adopt the latest technology. The Crewe factory workers don't use a machine to space perfectly matched cross stitched leather seats. Instead they do it by hand. Instead of using the car's built-in sensors to guide it to parallel and perpendicular parking spots the drivers must do it by hand.
