Time under tension and rep tempo sound like small details, the kind of minutiae lifters argue about between sets of bench press. In practice, they shape how a muscle experiences load and fatigue. Get them right, and you can coax more growth from the same weights. Get them wrong, and you either leave gains on the table or court joint irritation that sidelines your training. I’ve coached powerlifters who needed more muscle mass without compromising strength, and bodybuilders who needed more precision without losing their heavy lifts. Tempo and tension were often the missing link in both cases.

What time under tension really means

Time under tension, or TUT, is the amount of time a muscle spends producing force during a set. If you do 10 reps at a steady pace and each rep lasts 3 seconds, your TUT is about 30 seconds. That number matters because muscles respond to mechanical tension, metabolic stress, and muscle damage. TUT influences all three. In a typical hypertrophy set, you’ll spend 30 to 60 seconds under tension. Day 2 pull: Deadlift 5x3 at 1-0-1-0, weighted pull ups 4x5 at 1-1-2-0, barbell row 3x8 at 2-0-2-0, hammer curl 2x10 at 2-1-2-0.
