What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is interrogated, it sends an encoded signal with a four-digit code. This signal is called the SQUAWK code and forms the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable to speak on the radio. They are crucial to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar queries by displaying an identifier. This allows ATC to identify the aircraft on a busy radar screen.
