Elil Harai'Ra

All the world shall be your enemy, Hunter of a Thousand Sins

BACKGROUND

There are times in this world where one should learn to mind their own business. Young Elil failed to learn this lesson, long ago in an unassuming province at the eastern edge of the Mare Nostrum, that mighty sea which belonged solely to glorious Rome. The boy's older brother had been found guilty of theft. A common enough crime in those days, in that impoverished region of the globe.

Except when one had stolen from a man of wealth and means. One who wished to use the unfortunate thief as an example to the rest of the peasantry scraping out a living in the arid stone and sand. Elil's brother would die in agony, die slowly, die in public view as he bled to death upon the execution stand, nailed to two planks of rough-hewn wood.

There were other condemned criminals on the schedule of course, but Rome was never short of time in the agenda for executing just one more. In this case, two others, another thief and a rabble-rouser convicted of treasonous activities. Elil despaired then, for he knew this would be the last he saw of his brother. It was risky, but... he had to at least say goodbye, though his brother had forbade Elil from coming anywhere near the ugly, barren hill upon which he would die.

Elil crawled up to the dying men under cover of darkness as they hung there, nails in hands and feet. He'd seen the crowd mocking one of the convicted, stabbing him with a lance and placing sour wine to his lips. He'd overheard one man curse the supposed prophet, and one man, much to Elil's surprise, beg for forgiveness. Elil couldn't see what the man hanging in the center did or said, but he found himself filled with an unaccountable anger. It was this "prophet" who was at fault for his brother having been arrested after all. Without the chaos he'd caused in the province, without the extra groups of people coming to hear him preach, there wouldn't have been so many Romans on patrol.

They'd never have caught his brother.

He cursed the prophet. He struck his feet with a hand, for that was as high as the young boy could reach. Tears welled in his eyes, though no one could see them in the dark of night. Blood splattered Elil's hands, his face, his mouth. And he felt such guilt as he could not express with words. Elil had brought a skin of water for his brother. He'd hoped to provide one last kindness before the end. But both his brother and the other thief had already succumbed to their wounds and passed from this life. Grief waged war with guilt. Elil was too late.

In silent apology, he wrung as much of the vinegary wine from the discarded sponge as he could, soaking it with fresh, clean water. He grabbed a stick from the ground, and used it to hold the sponge to the troublemaker's lips. Nothing was said. No great moment in history passed. Neither curse nor blessing crashed down from heaven or rose up from hell.

He left the hill. The prophet passed. History moved on in its proper course. And Elil made his way through the world alone.

The guilt never left the boy. Nor did the remembered sounds of a dying man's last labored breaths. Anger grew within Elil. A fire inside he did not understand. A sensation that if he stayed idle, some dread unknown fate would come crashing down upon him. He wandered the world and grew into a man. Trouble followed his every step. He'd stumble into a den of murderers while trying to fence some stolen olive oil. He'd break into a wealthy patrician's villa, only to interrupt the patrician in the middle of raping one of the servant girls. He'd try and get one over on the Romans by smuggling goods under their noses, only to overhear a governor discussing his plans to "permanently resolve" the issue of certain undesirable families in his domain.

Elil understood none of this. But gradually he came to realize something was truly askew with his fate. No matter what he did, no matter where he tried to run or how hard he tried to keep his nose out of danger, there he went with the accuracy of a master archer's arrow shot. And he thought of that prophet, and the people who now followed him, growing in number even after death.

And he was sore afraid.

This prophet forgave all men, or so the stories claimed. And Elil, thinking back, thought he might have heard a whisper of forgiveness as he lifted that sponge in the darkness. Maybe. Dread filled the man who was no longer that young boy. In his heart, he knew that even if his actions had been forgiven, they had certainly not been forgotten. That blood which spattered his mouth, those drops which he had unjustly stolen, even by accident, would not so easily forget.

His soul did not rest in life. His soul did not rest in death. When Kofuko-san got hold of it, Elil's soul felt more like it had been... waiting. Not asleep. Waiting for a chance to repay a debt more vast than all the world. There was so, so much evil in this new land. Malice unbound by allegiance to any god or prophet, evil to be condemned by any and every faith.

Like the prophet, Elil rose once more. though he was no worshiper of any carpenter's son. But he would not preach. He would hunt. He MUST hunt.

Blood of demons, blood of prophets, blood of a young and frightened boy. All mingled with unnatural purpose, dragging Elil wherever fate pleased.

An endless ocean of wicked blood, shed in rememberance of a few drops.

PERSONALITY

Elil is a generally quiet, contemplative man. He speaks very little about his past, or the reasons why he does what he does. One thing is clear though, he is eternally (condemned to) get into trouble with all kinds of people, and then have to fight his way out. Fate seems hell-bent (maybe literally) on forcing Elil into conflict in order to pay down an absolutely behemoth load of karmic debt. Debt which he didn't even know he was getting himself into, but very real nonetheless.

And yet there is also forgiveness in fulfilling this debt, for the universe very, very badly desires Elil to actually make good on it. Even in life he grew into a mighty warrior, and in death this has amplified exponentially. Now shed of his former mortal failings, he is a finely honed blade raised in opposition to iniquity of all kinds. Despite his tendency to act like the street thief he used to be. You can't really say he's a holy warrior, but he almost always finds himself on the side of good, however inadvertently.

The wanderer's life suits Elil perfectly. He cares little for material wealth, he needs no food or drink or comforts anymore in this new existence he's found himself in. The man is no ascetic monk though, he freely sells or trades the valuables he finds out in the deepest wilderness where he roams. Elil finds great joy in going where no men have ever tread, and savors the rare moments in between life and death struggles when he can have a well-earned rest, play a little music for himself, read a book or scribble in a new piece of a formerly blank map.

Elil's life has been spent in constant struggle, constant training. His Aura is twisted, bent inward by the unimaginable weight of a few drops of stolen divine blood within him. Weapons cast themselves from his hands, which are the only implements permitted to him. If it may be said that a body can be refined past mortal limits, it is truly exemplified here. Elil's every gesture can be a lethal threat, and cleverness is always his sharp-witted guardian angel. He has learned through hard necessity how to be a ghost, how to tell tales, how to seek truth among countless lies, all in service of his fate.

CHARACTER CARD DATA

COMPANION

As a Companion, you're one of the rare individuals fate seems to have permitted to form a long-term link with the wandering warrior. There are precious few people who can remain near Elil for any length of time without karma forcing them apart once more, and you'd better be prepared to fight your way out of all the chaos that inevitably dogpiles the charcoal-singed man's path. The reverse is also true though. Elil is a weapon through and through, dragged from the infernal purgatory his soul fell into for a second shot at peace. Your enemies become his enemies, for what's a few more broken bodies amongst friends? He's not the best conversationalist, but he is unflinchingly honest and supportive insofar as he can be.

Perhaps most importantly, Elil cares very little for whatever treasures he finds along the way, and shares them with hardly an afterthought.

ROMANCE

As a Romance... You're playing on hard mode now. Elil was once a mortal man, he had relationships in life and he's not unfamiliar with how the dance is played. But it's been such a long, hard, dark road since then that almost all thoughts of intimacy have been bludgeoned out of him by armies of evil spirits and corrupt youkai. It'll take a lot of dedicated effort to convince Elil that you're here to stay, and more importantly it'll take a truly impressive lover to survive walking along his path.

Should that person appear before him though, there is absolutely nothing Elil wouldn't do on their behalf. Up to and including defying his own fate if need be, no matter the cost to himself.

RIVAL

As a Rival, you're either one of the baddies with some karmic debts of your own, or you're something Elil's never encountered before. A friendly foe. He's never met one before, but it's theoretically possible that someone without blood on their hands might come to blows with him for one reason or another. Violence of the most extreme variety would still ensue, but at least he'd teach you something while trying to cave in your skull.

Rare is the dark heart which crosses Elil's path and lives long enough to escape and fight another day, becoming an actual focus of Eill's wrath rather than just another one of the countless villains placed in his path. Unburdened by the frailties of flesh, powered by his own suffering, the man is a heat-seeking missile without thought of sleep or hesitation. He cannot be bargained with. He feels no remorse, no pity, no fear.

And he will not stop until one of you is dead.
