First Day at Arc, Sophomore First Period
.
Your first period class is Anatomy and you are not looking forward to it. You already know there will be dissections coming up during the semester, and it is the last thing you want to think about. Actually, the last thing you want to think about is how narrowly you avoided a fight in the hallway with the incredibly rude, auburn-haired girl in the blue blazer.
What else can go wrong on your very first day?
Just as you reach the door of your first class, you realize that the auburn-haired girl could be in one of your classes. She could be a sophomore, just like you are. That means you get to be worried all day long! Bummer.
"Come in, come in. Welcome!"
A teacher stands just inside the door, all smiles and waves. That gives you a little cause to relax.
The teacher at the door is a short, older woman with short brown hair that is like a helmet for her head. She wears a t-shirt with bones and organs illustrated and labeled in the areas you imagine they probably ought to be.
"I like your shirt!" you say in a low and dull voice, even though you meant to sound more excited.
The teacher doesn't notice.
"This is wearable technology," she says. "I am going to do a demonstration this morning that will blow you away. Find your seat."
You walk into a room full of lab tables and a few regular tables. You pick a lab table in the back. Two other students are already inside, two girls, who sit at another lab table. The girls practically huddle together.
"Hello," you say, more than loud enough for them to hear.
The girls stare but they do not answer.
What's up with this school?
You don't even have time to roll your eyes before bodies begin filling the room. You hear the teacher greeting students and boys and girls entering the room soon after. You notice each person looking over the room for a second or two, trying to decide where to sit. The lab tables seat 6, or at least, there are six stools around them.
One guy makes a beeline for the lab table where you are sitting. He picks the stool that places him furthest from everyone. You give him a hesitant smile. He does not smile back, but he acknowledges you by raising and lowering his eyebrows in a way. That's good enough for you. Two more girls join the table. They don't seem to know one another. You girls give a three-way half-smile. They guy looks over at one of the girls every two seconds or so, but that's all.
The class is mostly full and the teacher steps inside and closes the door. You look around. No blazers. That's one class down. While the teacher begins a speech about the wonders of anatomy and physiology, the door opens. You sigh when you see the blue blazer walk in and when you see the girl inside of it.
Thankfully, it isn't the girl from the hallway, but she walks in with one guy and one girl. Neither the additional girl nor the boy wear blazers. They look like the first girl's bodyguards or something.
"You are late," says the teacher. "Don't be late again. Take your seats in the back."
You sigh a jagged sigh. One of the girls next to you laughs. The girl and her entourage fill the remaining seats at your table.
You decide to:
Ask the teacher if you can go see the nurse
or
Pretend that the blue blazer people do not exist
