Sairaan's Write Up on Gift Sets (Genshin Impact Serenitea Pot)

Written as of version 3.2.

With some clever rotating and repositioning of furniture within a gift set you can control exactly where an invited companion shows up.
Note information here is mostly from my personal knowledge and testing. While I feel fairly confident on most of this, there's some aspects I haven't tested thoroughly enough, and there's always the possibility I missed something.

Gift Sets Basics

  • There's various sources for obtaining gift sets. You can refer to the Wiki to find out how to obtain a particular one.
  • All furnishings of a gift set must be obtained and be available in order to place the gift set down. Be wary of furnishings that are only available from the Realm Depot shop, which have a limited stock per day.
  • Some gift sets are too large and thus cannot be placed in certain smaller areas. For example "A Farewell Brief to Bustle and Bother" cannot be placed in a small room of the Liyue mansion. Keep this in mind when deciding which realm and mansion you want to design in.
  • Once a gift set is placed, its furnishings can be freely rearranged as long as they stay within the boundaries of the set. Removing a furnishing or placing it out of the set boundaries will cause it to lose its gift set properties.
    • There are height limitations when rearranging furnishings but this scales with the size of the set. Larger sets can tolerate furnishings being placed at much higher or lower elevations. You can visualize gift sets boundaries as a cylinder shape.
  • Every companion is associated with two gift sets. You can receive a first time reward from each set. More details in the in-depth section.
  • Only one companion may be invited to a single gift set at a time. You may opt to use several gift sets to invite multiple companions at once. For companions preferring the same gift set, you may even consider using multiple of the same gift sets.

Considerations for Designing with Gift Sets

  • Running out of load before you can finish furnishing is a common issue. A companion costs a whopping 1200 load. Gift sets are often used to be able to have a companion temporarily present in a room without needing to spend load for them in that particular room. Note you'll still need to have the companion elsewhere in the realm and pay the load cost in the area you place them in.
    • Note there are some exceptional gift sets that cost way more load than a companion itself. For example, "Amidst Scents and Serenity" for Nahida costs over 4000 load.
  • Aside from load concerns, you may appreciate gift sets simply for allowing you to have your companions be present in multiple areas of the realm rather than being awkwardly stuck in one spot.
    • You may further consider having a gift set in the same room as the companion, and use the invite function to simulate them moving around the room.
  • An invited companion provides new dialogue unique to the gift set. People who really like a particular companion may appreciate these additional lines. The contexts for these lines may inspire your builds too.
  • The furnishings of a gift set may further inspire a particular build as well.
    • While gift sets do force you to use specific furnishings, don't let any off-putting pieces completely deter you. If there's any piece you particularly dislike you may opt to hide them in various ways such as within larger furnishings. For duplicate furnishings, you can also overlap them within each other to make it appear as only one furnishing. This is overall a bit of a waste of load but possibly more preferred than being forced to work with furnishings in an awkward fashion.

In-Depth Mechanics and Observations

  • The first time a companion and its gift set are placed in a realm, they will, with priority, relocate to the gift set. In this state, the companion will seem to never leave the gift set (tested for 20 minutes by SomebodyUnown#6006), and you also would not be able to invite any other companions to the particular gift set. Only one of this first time state can exist at a time in the realm. If there are multiple instances of a first time companion and their gift set, only one will occur at a time and you would not be able to invite other first time companions to their respective gift set (confirmed by SomebodyUnown#6006). Upon speaking to the invited companion, you'll receive a one time reward and they will return to their original placement. Afterwards you may continue to invite and repeat their dialogue with no limits but no further rewards.
    • You may consider never speaking and collecting a first time reward from one companion so they'll permanently be at a gift set location without needing to be manually invited. For most people, missing out on the rewards and not being able to speak with them probably isn't worth it though.
  • A companion re-invited to a gift set will remain at that location until spoken to, until 5 minutes have elapsed, or if you enter your furnishing edit menu and save. In other words they are only temporarily placed at the gift set.
  • Generally when you use a gift set to invite a companion, they spawn somewhere within the gift set. These spawn points are predetermined.
    • There may be some priority order to which point a companion will spawn at, especially if some spawn points are already blocked but I have no hard evidence for this. I've only personally observed that for "A Farewell Brief to Bustle and Bother" my invited companion almost always spawns at one location even though multiple spawn points are available.
  • Every set generally has 5 spawn points. There are a few exceptions where a set may have more or less spawn points. Rarely, there may be some additional spawn points already blocked by the default layout.
  • You can rotate a gift set to change the positions of these spawn points. Do note that the positioning of spawn points relative to each other and to the central point (where you access the invite menu) are fixed and cannot be individually changed. In other words, if a gift set has two spawn points next to each other, they will always be next to each other no matter how you rotate the set.
    • This may be more advanced but don't be restricted to only 90 degree rotations. Consider intermediate, more "diagonal" angles too.
    • Once you determined a location where you want a particular spawn point to be, try rotating the set while keeping the specific spawn point at the specific desired location. Doing so lets you change the positions of the central invite point as well as other spawn points to more desirable locations.
  • Each spawn point has a fixed orientation that a companion will be facing upon being invited and this will remain the same. In other words, if a companion spawns facing north for a particular point, they will always spawn north at that point no matter how you rotate the set. You may want to consider this when determining which room or area you want to use a gift set, especially if your gift set has limited orientations (e.g. All spawn points of "Amidst Scents and Serenity" are facing west), or awkward spawn positions.
  • If a spawn point overlaps with any of the following, the spawn point will become blocked and an invited companion cannot spawn there and instead will spawn at any remaining unobstructed spawn points. You can make use of this to ensure an invited companion only spawns at certain points.
    • Non-carpet furnishings or initial placement of an animal. The detection zone for this seems fairly large.
    • Out of bound areas of any interior room you're currently designing, even if a particular spot would be in bounds of a different room.
    • Elevation differences that are lower than roughly 0.4 or higher than roughly 0.1 from the central point. Note that desert landforms seem to have very uneven surfaces and easily disrupts gift set spawns. Also note that the elevation change from a pavement is too high. It's still possible to invite companions onto a pavement but the central point of the gift set must also be on the pavement's floor elevation.
  • For exteriors, you can position a spawn point out of bounds and have the invited companion spawn there. This manner of spawning seems to ignore many of the aforementioned restrictions. (See: https://i.imgur.com/TivUVJp.png and https://i.imgur.com/HgDq48V.jpg However, it seems you still cannot spawn into the void or into deeper waters. I haven't tested this much.
  • If all spawn points are blocked, then for interiors the invited companion will spawn at the south west staircase, while for exteriors they will spawn at a specific out of bounds position in each area.
    • If a companion is currently blocked from spawning, you can enter the furnishing menu, move a piece within the set and cancel, and then leave the furnishing menu. This can temporarily cause the companion to appear at a spawn point, ignoring obstructions at that point. (See: https://i.imgur.com/LxnHYSd.jpg) I haven't tested this much.
  • If a companion is being invited but they're currently nearby and fixated on you (changing their orientation and pose), they will not change positions until you move away and lose their attention. After which they will suddenly warp to the invited spot without the screen fading out.

Method to Deducing Spawn Points

  1. Place down a gift set preferably in an isolated area and invite a companion to the gift set.
  2. Note their position. You can use a skill that leaves something behind such as Keqing, Zhongli, Geo MC, etc. I personally found Gorou best for this as he can aim, has a relatively long duration, and doesn't generate a solid object so you can place it directly over the invited companion.
  3. Return to the furnishing menu and then place a furniture to block the position you observed in step 2. If you intend to move or rotate the set later, then I recommend using a furniture within the same set, so you can continue keeping track of the spawn points with those pieces of furniture.
  4. Repeat 2-3 until the invited companion starts spawning out of bounds.
  5. To test for any rare spawn points that were blocked by default, move all furnishings of the set to a formerly empty position, except for those that are blocking known spawn points. Then invite again and see if any new spawn points show up.

Below is a collection of images for spawn points I've personally deduced. I do not have spawn points deduced for every set. Please note these were created initially for my own personal use so I apologize for the varying levels of quality. They may not be very accurate so please only refer to them loosely and test thoroughly when finalizing your build.
