As soon as you text your response, "attending" in all caps to demonstrate your excitement about the whole thing, the thought hits you.
What am I going to wear?
Rhona Everly is a high school girl, like you are, but she is a classy, sophisticated high school girl. Her parties are usually formal. You need to get a dress--a nice dress. The last really nice dress you wore was in eighth grade to your violin recital. Rhona had a party a while back, but she provided the dresses for all of the girls that time.
You don't have the money to buy a dress. Even if you did, you wouldn't be able to get it in time for Rhona's party, not unless you go to the store in person, which you never do.
You start making calls. You only need a basic black dress. Nothing fancy.
Prom has already passed. Surely one of your senior friends has a dress that she can loan you.
Amazing! You manage to reach four different friends who are willing to bring their dresses to you! Hopefully, at least one of them will fit ...
On Friday afternoon, the dresses begin arriving. Portia drops off her dress, a light-colored, long-sleeved wrap dress. Next, Huey drops off her dress, a tiny, black strapless affair. Then came Christie. Her dress was a sleeveless and scarlet with a deep V-neck and a full skirt. Last, Marta arrives at just before 3 that afternoon. Her dress was a dusty blue chiffon halter dress.
You spend the rest of the afternoon telling everyone in the house, "My friends are awesome."
Now, which dress?
You decide that you will look like a whale in Huey's black dress. Portia's long-sleeved wrap dress is nice, but you fear sweating all over it and it would be just your luck for it to come unwrapped without you knowing. The safest bets are the sleeveless scarlet dress and the blue chiffon.
