silvercandle is a romantic ship between silver spoon and candle from the show inanimate insanity. it’s also my hyperfixation. so i’m gonna dedicate this rentry to rambling about it !
silver
silver spoon is a character who thrives out of competition. being a man that, since the beginning, was shown to be highly competitive and yet so open to insulting even those that are his allies, it’s a wonder he made it to the final three. he’s a strategist, and although many don’t think highly of him, denying his intelligence would be an undermining of the game he played during his season.
this, of course, is not a denial of his (lightly-put) unlikable traits. he is incredibly selfish, and won’t hesitate to throw others under the bus. silver is egotistical, adamant to violence and rude, even if he keeps it wrapped in a layer of silk known as his regal persona. it was also revealed that, when making him, mephone added the trait of how he thinks he’s useless. this’ll be important later!
candle
candle is a character who doesn’t hesitate. she’s bold, taking challenges head-on, and this is also shown throught her attitude towards her guidance to others. even while OJ was the “official” leader of her team, she constantly guided them or specific teammates. she’s also a person of an unwavering calm atittude at first, completely dismissing any of silver’s initial rude remarks towards her and instead offering her compassion to him. however, this isn’t to say she’s not aware of how said behavior can’t affect others, as she’s the one to scold silver for going too far and hurting OJ when he wanted to boast about how he got the other eliminated. candle is also shown to have a high degree of tease in her humor, as there are many examples of her poking fun on others (tho never crossing any lines).
she’s also shown as someone who cares deeply about trust and connections. candle is a guiding light to many in her life, and she holds those she cares for in a high status. she may be controlling at times, as her (confirmed) must be needed mindset makes her want to constantly watch over and help those she can. this, as of the canon, has led to her sabotaging her own relationships as she thought they’d get rid of her anyway (tho said attitude was fed on by silver).
intertwined forces of nature
there are multiple stances of silver & candle being tied by something that trespasses physical, but the most blatant one is the pair’s inner flames. so, let’s start with that!
a lot i see when it comes to the misinterpretation of this specific arc is people considering the inner flames something as cut-dry as a set of powers. justin has already described them as creatures before, numerous times! but alas. this isnt the day for that ramble (one day tho. One day i will.)
the inner flames are a physical manifestation of the bond between objects. they’re separate entities that live within one’s body, having their own thought process and interpretation of the other part’s feelings, which they assumedly have access to. candle already had hers at the beginning of inanimate insanity because of her being the personification of guidance, of a connection that must exist so one can lead another out of a dark time (something that, assumedly by me and supported by a cameo my friend got for me, mephone needed desperately at the time iii started). to awaken your inner flame, one must be in direct contact with another holder.
and yet, silver’s flame only awakened after candle’s elimination. she wasn’t there when that creature started flickering to light, or, as he puts it, when he turned gold. this only goes to show how they affected each other so much that it changed them permanently. their bond, altho rocky at first, truly is important to them as characters.
and yet, silver misuses of his newfound “powers”. i find some ironic comedy in how many people’s interpretation of this fascinating aspect of ii worldbuilding matches almost to a T what silver keeps misinterpreting over and over: it’s a power, a party trick, something cool and new he can wave around and make others fawn over. and altho candle calls him out on it, to say that she hasn’t done similar would be a lie: she already used of her flame to get more donations for a challenge! so, what’s the difference between these two scenarios? why would she be so upset at silver?
it’s because, even tho she was utilizing it as a party trick, she was doing it for her team. candle only lets her flame take control of the body if there is something else on the line for the others, too. this is the purpose it was intended for: helping those who she’s connected with. and so, as she tells silver off for how uncaring he’s being, she’s met with a paradox of a hurt response: our flames need not be intertwined.
he’s lying! blatantly at that! how can’t they be intertwined if their flames are the very thing born from their bond? how could they be fully separate if they’re only here because of how the other changed them? and so is created this contradiction that’s soon proven harmful. when silver’s flame takes full control of his body, it’s shown how destructive they are. harming the body the pair share in the name of violence, or being extremely angry. this fury comes to a tipping point as silver’s flame and candle’s flame enter in a combat, and yet, even then, it doesn’t harm candle. it doesn’t hurt her, it puts her flame out, which silver already knows doesn’t hurt her, instead leaving her unconscious (and, assumedly, so does his flame).
