Visual Representation of the Functions

  • "Each socionics type perceives and processes all of the aspects of reality, but depending on the positioning of those aspects in this TIM’s model A this happens to varying degrees of clarity, depth, and comfort. Model A can be figuratively pictured as a round tower with eight windows that face in different directions. Some windows are large and clear; from these windows a person can see far and in great detail - these are the strong functions. Other windows are small and blurry, allowing to see only vague contours, or not even distinguish whether it’s light or dark outside - these are the weak functions. The size and properties of each window are individual for each person, but, at the same time, there are certain rules that concern their positioning that specify the 16 distinct types of information metabolism of socionics." - Source

Accepting - focus on obtaining a picture of reality, ‘come first’ in each block and are odd-numbered (1, 3, 5, and 7). On the left in the Ego and Id, but on the right in the Super-ego and Super-id.

Producing - create some sort of ‘new’ product that is molded to that cross-cut of reality obtained by the accepting function, ‘come second’ and are even-numbered (2, 4, 6, and 8)

1. Base

  • Accepting
  • "The base function actively and competently processes the information it receives, forming the dominant perspective the individual interprets the world through. Conclusions reached by this function are often confident and serve as the primary motivation for expressed behavior."
  • "This function is used knowingly and unknowingly all the time, it is the basis of what a type is about. An individual has a powerful capacity to evaluate the world through this function. A positive perspective is one that creates a worldview using this function as the lens. We cannot really „overuse“ this function as we will never truly be tired of using it. This function represents the point of confident mastery due to ongoing use, awareness and capability. In short, this is the source of confidence, it is how someone lives their life, their most comfortable state of mind and a personal motivation in life."

2. Creative

  • Producing
  • "The creative function readily adapts and adjusts to the needs of the base function, subtly influencing the dominant perspective set by it. Activated by the base function when the situation requires it."
  • "This function is used with the base one to meet goals. An individual has a powerful capability to act upon the world using this function. Unlike the base function, in this one overuse is felt and can feel tiring. This is a point of modest success due to ease of use. In short: this function is used to interact with others and feels needed when used to help solve others’ problems, and can cause irritation by overuse, either by the user themselves or others."

3. Role

  • Accepting
  • "The role function moderately and strenuously processes the information it receives, capably fulfilling the external demands placed on it to some degree. However, when required to act in unfamiliar situations, it can easily fail to meet expectations. The attitude towards the role is that it is something people feel that they should do, not something that they would want to do."
  • "This function is expressed usually around new people. It is not valued but emphasis is placed on expressing this function publically in ways that are commonly socially acceptable and anticipated. It’s a point of cocky mistakes due to social rigidity. In short, it’s perceived as a personal weakness, an individual might make attempts to improve it, criticism of this function causes irritation and is activated when anxious."

4. PoLR

  • Producing
  • "The vulnerable function consistently rejects the information that it receives, failing to understand and recognize its importance. It can be a source of frustration for people, either because they are forced to use it themselves or have failed to consider it and have to endure the consequences."
  • "This function shows a strong difficulty and defensiveness with use. It can be improved but it will never be mastered. A pessimistic perspective is created when one views the world through this function’s lens. Overuse leads to depressed exhaustion. It is a point of humble helplessness due to inability. In short, usage of this function causes extreme irritation, it is avoided as much as possible and has to be developed with personal experiences, it is often ignored."

5. Suggestive

  • Accepting
  • "The suggestive function struggles to process the information it receives. It knows what what information it needs, but doesn’t know how to get it on its own. Because of this, the suggestive function can become a source of neurosis when left unfulfilled. However, it happily accepts and adapts to outside support, resulting in a sense of bliss or completion when provided."
  • "Information about this function feels understandable, safe and desirable, but it is difficult to produce by the individual themself. It is a point of humble helplessness due to inadequacy. In short, when seeing someone use this function well, it is entertaining, soothing, energizing, leading to self-actualization and deficiency causes attempts to self supply"

6. Mobilizing

  • Producing
  • "The mobilizing function is an area of high priority, but is initially inconsistent and unreliable in its output. If not careful, this variability can result in the individual attempting this function with overconfidence, only to mess up and feel shame for not living up to their expectations. It is only when a balanced approach, thus avoiding the extremes of confidence and shame, is when the mobilizing function grows and becomes more capable. Success in this area is difficult to achieve, but will feel very rewarding by the individual once it does. "
  • "An individual has a strong interest in getting more information about this element, it drives interest and activity, being the basis of the „hidden agenda“. It is a point of cocky mistakes due to playful excitement. In short, this function is appreciated, but overuse by others can be seen as excessive, you might either overindulge in it or severely neglect it, if you do the latter the function can cause boredom."

7. Ignoring

  • Accepting
  • "The ignoring function restricts the information it receives, only ever expanding in scope when there is an apparent need for it. The reason for this is that it shares the same information domain as the agenda-setting base function and as such, it is subordinated to its needs."
  • "An individual is capable of using information of this function but there is a strong impulse to lessen use for both themself and others. This is the point of modest success due to strength of evaluation and ongoing moderation. In short, overuse of this function is seen as constantly annoying, it is mostly used in private and can be freely used when needed, but it often causes boredom and avoidance of it makes it seem weak to others."

8. Demonstrative

  • Producing
  • "The demonstrative function passively and competently processes information, operating in the background and providing support for the creative function when requested. Success in this area can be easily achieved, but it will not feel very rewarding by the individual. "
  • "An individual has a strong capability in this area but a total disinterest in changing others’ perspectives on its use, he prefers to be quiet but constant use is performed by itself. It is a point of confident mastery due to excellent evaluation and constant control. In short, it is often used in private, often the individual makes fun of it, but it is important to the worldview and it is often perceived as obvious information."
