What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

When a transponder gets interrogated it sends out an encoded signal with the four-digit code. This signal is known as the SQUAWK code and it is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to relay a specific message to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to inform controllers to changes in weather conditions. Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar probes with an identifier code. This enables ATC to locate the aircraft in a busy radar screen.
