Origin Story
In his youth, Dr. Herodotus was already making waves in the academic space. Uncovering long lost ruins, deciphering dead languages, and making breakthroughs in the field of genetic memories. His success drew the attention of the government who initially approached him as friendly investors who were thrilled to fund his magnum opus.
The legend serum was a hypothetical compound that imbued the recipient with the skills and abilities of the world's greatest warriors, leaders, and philosophers. Dr. Herodotus believed that there had to be something more to greatness than mere happenstance. He theorized that if he had enough DNA samples, he could crack the code. The government saw potential in his work.
Dr. Herodotus was given a blank check and resources he never even dreamed of. He had his own laboratory, a team of brilliant researchers, and near limitless authority to travel the world and organize dig sites wherever he wished. In the early days, progress was meteoric and the handlers were friendly.
Everything changed when central intelligence got involved. The doctor had been digging into things they wanted buried. Histories they wanted forgotten. More and more restrictions were imposed. Dr. Herodotus was only allowed to investigate warriors, soldiers, or generals. He could never publish his findings or speak to the media. The vision for the legend serum was changed. Instead of imbuing the user with the qualities of greatness, it became about creating the ultimate weapon.
The doctor's team was slowly broken apart. Friends who shared his ideals were quietly replaced with cold and calculating scientists who cared for nothing but results. The doctor fought back every step of the way. At first, his handlers tried to convince him that his project had grown beyond just himself and that they needed to do what's in the best interest of everyone. When that didn't work, they made him a personal offer. They promised him vast sums of wealth if he simply complied and did as he was told. To Dr. Herodotus, this offer was a confirmation of everything he had suspected. These people cared nothing for his vision. He threw down his badge and furiously declared that he would never work for them.
They blocked him from leaving and brought in one of his former associates, a woman he had worked with for years. One of the agents forced the woman to her knees and drew a gun. The doctor could not believe what was happening. He was in complete denial, telling them that this attempt to scare him was pointless. He told them to put away the gun and end this farce. The agent placed the gun to the back of the woman's head. Dr. Herodotus screamed for them to wait. The agent pulled the trigger.
From that point on, the doctor was confined to the laboratory and forced to work against his will, but this was his laboratory, made to his exact specifications. He worked in secret, exploiting every blind spot and utilizing every resource he knew would go unnoticed. They wanted a weapon. He was determined to give it to them.
The doctor directed the researchers to pursue dead ends and snipe hunts. All the while, the legend serum was well on its way to completion. The plans existed only in his head. The pieces scattered were throughout the lab. Decoy projects and excess materials. But progress on paper was becoming too slow. Central intelligence began to grow suspicious. The doctor overheard plans to dispose of him. Time had run out.
He knew the serum wasn't complete. The psychological effects could be ruinous, but the alternative was death. He hastily gathered the pieces and began the final synthesis. The other researchers took notice. They demanded he stop and called for the guards. The doctor strapped on a gas mask and mixed two beakers. An explosion of fumes flooded the building. Everyone in the area began to seize up as the paralytic gas took effect. Guards swarmed in and collapsed as soon as they drew breath. Sirens began to blare. The doctor worked furiously. He heared boots clattering in all directions, orders being shouted, guns being loaded. He needed moments. Just moments.
Then he noticed it. A haunting silence had filled the air. To anyone else, that would have been a relief. The doctor knew better. Panic set in. He looked at the timer on the synthesizer. Thirty seconds remaining. The silence was broken by a single set of footsteps echoing through the halls. The doctor judged the distance by ear. They had entered the radius of the gas, but the steps didn't stop. Twenty seconds remaining. Desperately, the doctor wracked his brain thinking of anything. An idea came to him. He threw open a control panel and began splicing wires, activating the building's lockdown. Steel bulkheads slammed down on all sides. Ten seconds remaining. One by one a deafening roar of crushed steel boomed through the building. The barriers weren't even slowing them down. The doctor's head shuffled back and forth between the final bulkhead and the timer. Five seconds remaining. The final bulkhead split open. A high pitch screech of energy unlike anything the doctor had ever heard pierced his ears. Black lightning arced through the air. A tall figure in all white with a wicked smile stepped into the room and locked eyes with the doctor who turned away in terror. Synthesis complete. The doctor's hands rushed for the syringe. He had made it just in time.
As soon as his hands found the serum, he heard a bang. It felt like something had punched him hard in the back. He tried to ignore it and inject the serum, but his knees buckled. His limbs stopped responding. He felt a warm liquid running down his chest. Breaths stopped. Everything was fading. Then he understood. This was death.
The man in white rolled Dr. Herodotus onto his back. It was the same man who had killed his associate all those years ago. In his hand, he held the same pistol. The man laughed and mocked him. Calling it all a futile little rebellion. Then he saw the syringe.
"Oh? What's this? You actually finished it, didn't you? I knew you were up to something. I suppose some gratitude is in order. Now we'll never lose again, and it's all thanks to you."
The man in white reached for the syringe and something finally snapped. Fury unlike anything he had ever felt before gave him strength where his body had failed. The doctors hand shot up, covered in the distinctive black polish of armament haki. He caught the man by the wrist and managed to roar some final words of resistance through bloodied gurgles.
"Over my dead body!"
With his other hand, the doctor pressed the syringe into his neck. He saw countless memories. Felt the wills of heroes far greater than himself wash over him, all fighting for control. The doctor welcomed them in, but bade them one final request from a dying warrior. A sacred pact understood by all. He called for vengeance, and they answered.
Praxis D. Herodotus died that day and was reborn into something greater. From the ruins of the government facilities emerged an amalgamation of the world's greatest heroes. Their wills had all bowed before the truest and greatest hero of them all. The God of Strength, Heracles.
