Who consented to letting a demon seed thrive in their womb? Who dreamt of bearing an abomination that could scar the world as deep and red as wine seeping through a bone-white silk gown of a bride? Katja Eklöf for certain did not. Ne’er once had she anticipated the day when she was rendered unable to tell the distinction ‘tween flesh and blood of her own and that of a seraph in banishment. How could a body that was no different from a shaped pile of bones had what it takes to harness power only accessible to the likes of heretics?
The disaster-born, Djel-forsaken, Djel-damned.
That day, every hoarfrost-coated blade of grass fluttered like a diamond flame, pearled with beads of gore more grotesque than that which was spun from a macabre theatre. A man expelled blood from his lungs, his face distorted into abhorrence for being put under the mercy of a once frail-looking child. In place of his hands forming into a curve to beg for clemency, the tip of his index digit nonetheless pointed at she whose skin now gleamed with star fire. “She is a Grisha!”

Ne’er would Lieve Meijer have thought of herself as the horror of a woman. She was but a child, blest with faculties to tread along the tether of life and death, endowed with a property regarded as an irremediable malady. Born as a Grisha Heartrender to a high-ranking drüskelle and a woman who has Hedjut ancestry does not grant her any luxury of what is deserving of humankind, for she is not deemed as one. Ostracised she was, sent off to Novyi Zem along with her mother by one whom she called dear father, a marionette whose limbs sway in tune with the strings of public prejudice.
Alas, Djel condemned her still.
Hijacked was the ship, resulting in the death of her mother. But then, even a chance to grieve was reserved only for those human enough not to reach for the heart of the world. Lieve was captured by the slave traders and sold to Tante Heleen afterwards, the owner of The Menagerie where she was coerced to hold down a job as an indenture.
