BACKSTORY

Iñez Akiyama or more fondly known as “Iñaki” was born into a world of inherited fortunes and carefully guarded legacies. The daughter of two major moguls in shipping and real estate, Iñaki spent the first six years of life being raised between maternal and paternal grandparents’ homes. By the time Iñaki finally lived under the same roof as the parents, more than one place had already become home.

Though loved and surrounded by family, the absence of parents during those formative years left Iñaki wary of affection, never quite knowing how to accept the love that had always been there. The death of her paternal grandmother, someone who had been a constant in early life, shattered a part of Iñaki that words could never quite reach.

By university, Iñaki had become something of a family headache. Rebellious antics and questionable decisions soon made Iñaki a familiar name in the tabloids, earning the reputation of a spoiled heiress with too much money and too little sense. Few knew the person behind the headlines, or that beneath the defiance was a grief Iñaki had never learned how to carry.

After studying Business Management at New York University, Iñaki transferred to Singapore to pursue Business and Culinary Arts. She eventually established Subtle Sips, a Los Angeles café, and ran it for a year and a half before stepping away from the life she built there. Then came two years away from the public eye. It was a difficult time for the Akiyama family, as Iñaki fell terribly ill and underwent treatment away from the public’s scrutiny. The family kept the details private, leaving the public to wonder about the sudden disappearance of an heiress who had once seemed to be everywhere. When Iñaki eventually resurfaced, the world was still speculating about the absence.

These days, Iñaki holds an executive position as Director of Development and Acquisitions within the family’s real estate empire while continuing to accept select brand collaborations. Between boardrooms and camera flashes, Iñaki is still finding their footing, learning to live a life that bears their name without letting it define them.
