The thing didn't have a name. It didn't know how it had gotten to be where it was. It didn't know where it came from. All it knew was that sunlight irritated it, and water was painful to touch—when it came near, the creature lost control of its teleportation, blinking through space at random just to get away.
It had found a nice place to hide—a small, hollowed-out cave, isolated from both the sun and the rain—when the creature arrived. Freakishly short, limbs not long enough for its body, pink skin like one of the four-legged creatures it had seen during the bright hours. A relative, maybe? But the four-legged beast didn't have that tuft of fur onthe top of its head, or the garments covering its body.
The creature vocalized something on seeing it—a start of surprise, looking at the lanky being hiding in the corner, huddled into the dark. A spark of rage flooded the thing's body, teeth gnashign as the creature stared—it didn't know why it reacted like this, but the creature's stare was nearly as painful as hated water—it reached out a clawed hand, slapping against the ground near the creature, and the creature jumped again, looking away. It backed out of the cavern slowly, occasionally casting glances back as if the thing would follow it.
The thing, seeking comfort, began gathering the dirt coating the floor of the cave. Its long limbs and clawed hands made for excellent shovels, pulling dirt from stone, packing it into a rough cubical shape. It hissed as the loam failed to maintain the right cohesion, fixing the edges even as they crumbled.
Eventually it was left with nothing more than a pile of dirt, despite its best efforts. There was some grass thrown in the mix as well—but the thing considered that grass and dirt were inseperable concepts anyways… so why try to sort it out?
The rest of the cave was stone—the thing had gathered the layer of soil that coated the entrance, and it now had in its posession the only dirt in the world, as far as it was aware. It knew, of course, that there was dirt in the outside, but the outside was where the sun and water was.
The creature returned—the thing kept its eyes on it, jealously guarding its precious pile of soil—this time bearing an object of its own. A roughly carved piece of stone, with a stick embedded. The thing watched as the creature chipped rocks from the wall with its object, intent on some purpose. The thing noticed that the creature was wet, and huddled deeper into the crack in the wall—then, noticing that its dirt was unguarded, stepped back forward to wrap its arms around its treasure.
The creature kept vocalizing—sometimes, it felt like the noises were directed at the thing, but it could not understand them. The sound was warped, as if passing through a great distance. Still, the thing replied—vocalizing in response whenever the creature adressed a noise at it—in case the creature was challenging its dominion over the dirt pile.
Eventually, the creature had tunneled into the rock enough to disappear from the cave entirely—the thing still watched the hole, in case it emerged again, but only the sounds of the creature's object striking stone echoed.
