India's Law Enforcer Facing Charges for for Bitcoin Misappropriation in Fraud Probe Details New Development: Cryptocurrency Scam
I recently read on Coinatory about an Indian police officer who was caught embezzling a large sum of 1.8 crores INR (about $216,000) in BTC tied to a notable cryptocurrency fraud case. The story revolves around SR Chandrahar, a ex-inspector with the CCB, who reportedly accessed the digital wallet of hacker Ramesh Srikrishna, a major player in an current probe.

The fraud in focus originates from 2017, including hacks on prominent crypto exchanges like Unocoin and Bitfinex. These breaches caused unlawful earnings worth about 5.5 crores INR ($660,000). Ramesh Srikrishna, along with his partner Robin Khandelwal, tried to launder the illicit funds through Bitcoin. However, their activities were cut short when they were apprehended in 2020.
Originally, the Crime Branch reported the Bitcoins as lost, claiming Srikrishna of manipulating the “Bitcoin core application” to confuse the investigation. This seemed like a closed chapter until the Special Investigation Team (SIT) discovered alarming information. Allegedly, Chandrahar forced Robin into transferring the Bitcoins while in jail and then destroyed all evidence of these deals.
Based on the FIR filed by the Special Investigation Team, the inspector, with the aid of two other crime branch officers and a cybersecurity expert named Kumar Santosh, accessed the digital wallet at Kumar’s office in Bangalore between December 30th, 2020 and January 6th, 2021. This intricate plan left no traces, but eventually, the truth emerged.
Inspector Chandrahar now is up against multiple charges including unlawful detention, public trust breach, and erasing evidence. His arrest from his house in Bengaluru's north side marks a important breakthrough in the investigation. Moreover, two other unnamed officers have also been arrested in relation to this Bitcoin scam, further highlighting the extent of the wrongdoing involved.
India has seen a surge in digital currency scams and deceptions in recent years, which has prompted authorities to intensify their oversight of the nation's cryptocurrency sector. The Chandrahar incident is a clear indication of the flaws within the system and the lengths to which some people will go for profit.
Coinatory highlighted, this story demonstrates the intricate relationship between security forces and the digital currency sphere. It also prompts critical concerns about the security of cryptocurrencies and the ethical responsibilities of those entrusted to safeguard them. The continuing initiatives to reduce such deceptions are crucial in maintaining the integrity and stability of the cryptocurrency market in the country and beyond.
