this page will only be talking about genes that are in hognoses (including what a “het” is). this will not be mainly talking about the appearance of hognoses!

what is a phenotype?

a phyenotype is a gene that is visible to the naked eye. think of it this way, the "ph" can stand for physical, or the "p" alone can stand for picture. for example, you can see if someone has black or brown hair, blue or grey eyes, and whatnot! this is obviously passed down from one or the other, dominant or recessive


what is a genotype?

a genotype is a gene, a lot more telling than a phenotype. since. like,, it's a bit more obvious lolss.... genes are inside of dna of any living creature, making up what they are yayyyyy sorry i'm in the middle of algebra as of writing all of this and i am super tired sorry again alleles are the versions of genes, composed of two or more. they are found in a specific location of a chromosone yada yada.. pay attention in biology kids


what is dominat and recessive?

in case you can't remember, a dominat gene is much more powerful than any other gene. use a pennet square if you need to haha.... let's use hair color for this! brown hair is a dominat trait (B (big letters are needed for this)) and having blonde hair is recessive (bb). since both parents have brown hair, their genes can look like BB or Bb. BB is completely dominat and will never have a recessibe gene unless it is crossed with the small b in Bb, or cross with bb. BB x Bb will result in BB and Bb. BB x bb will result in all of Bb. this applies to any plants and animals that are being crossed bred!


homozygous and hetrozygous

i will be using the same example of hair color for the rest of the page (unless needed otherwise). a homozygous gene can either BB (homozygous dominant) or bb (homozygous recessive). hetrozygous is only Bb.


codominance

codominance refers to when the alleles/genes are mixed together. have you ever seen a flower with different colored petals? no?? well me neither but it happens a lot i guess, and it is the most noticiable of this! for example, people with natural blonde highlights in their hair with brown hair (i have a friend with this also hehe she's very pretty) has the gene Bb. this is only an occurance that can happen within hognoses as well! morphs that have this will be mentioned in the next page


what is a het?

the term het is short for hetrozygous, so it is a hidden trait within snakes! if you ever had bought a hognose and noticed it had "het [morph]" but it doesn't show said morph, then do not worry! it is not visible and will not be shown unless you pair that hognose with another hognose snake that contains the homo gene of the same morph (it must be a het paired with a homo or else it will not show/a less likely chance)


t-negative and t-positive

the t in both of these genes stand for tyrosinase which is an amino acid. both of these are two versions of albinos . t-negative is the albino that is the most recgonizeable which is the reds, oranges, and yellows that you see for this snake specifically. t-positive is the opposite which makes dark colors like browns and caramel colors.
