Anime:

  1. Re:Zero | MAL | AP
  • Psychological Torture, the anime. Personally, I love how Subaru has to work for everything, it's not just given to him. He has to struggle through so much and endure tons of pain to even take a small break... And he's actually quite a relatable guy. I know it's a fairly controversial anime but I feel like Subaru as a character is really well written, which is why its my favorite anime.
    TW: Gore, lots of it.
  1. Mob Psycho 100 | MAL | AP
  2. Oshi no Ko | MAL | AP
  3. Assassination Classroom | MAL | AP
  4. One Punch Man | MAL | AP
  5. Kaguya-sama: Love is War | MAL | AP
  6. Sk8 the Infinity | MAL | AP
  7. ReLIFE | MAL | AP
  8. Bocchi the Rock! | MAL | AP

Manga:

  1. Onanie Master Kurosawa | MAL | AP
Ongoing | 31 Chapters | 4 Volumes | Kurosawa is a master masturbator. And every day after school, he sneaks in to the unused girl's bathroom on the 3rd floor to blow his load. But one day, he gets caught by a bullied girl with her own agenda. This story is full of regrets, redemption, and consequences.
  • Might just seem like a funny haha manga, but it gets into the nitty gritty of how your actions truly have consequences, and that repentance is possible if you're willing to put the work in. Truly heartwarming! A good short read. Honestly, I have no idea why this isn't an animated movie.
  1. Mr. Mallow Blue | MAL | AP
Ongoing | 33 Chapters | 5 Volumes | Due to a betrayal from a trusted friend, Aoi is a shut-in dropout living in a cramped apartment. Sakura is a girl who was ruthlessly bullied by her peers, and despite being assisted by the handsome Minazuki, she isn't the least bit grateful. These three who live in a cruel society meet by chance, arising in unexpected outcomes...
  • I want to spontaneously combust because this manga is actually SO PEAK and I need EVERYONE WITHIN A 3,000,000 mile radius to read this. The art, banger. The story, banger. There's a heavy queer subtext (both GL AND BL) in this manga too which is a bonus.
    TW: Attempted Suicide, Self-Harm, Bullying
  1. Hell's Paradise | MAL | AP
Completed | 128 Chapters | 13 Volumes | A battle-packed shounen featuring Gabimaru, a vicious ninja assassin who just wants to be with his wife. Sentenced for death, his only escape is to recover an elixir from an island that could be described as both heaven and hell.
  • Gabimaru is a badass, and his values even more so. Saegiri too, she's an absolute girlboss. Part of the excitement are the countless mysteries of the island, and of course, the masterfully choreographed battles.
  1. Sakamoto Days | MAL | AP
Ongoing | 219 Chapters | 21 Volumes | Sakamoto Taro, an elite hit man feared by many, suddenly retired after he found love. He got married, had a kid, and now lives a comfortable life running a convenience store. Things change when a former coworker visits, and his past suddenly catches up to him...
  • My favorite characters, huh... probably Shin, Akira, and Amane. And Sakamoto, of course. Amane is my top fav tho. Personally, I didn't really like anyone in The Order... especially Nagumo.
  1. Blue Exorcist | MAL | AP
    Ongoing | 156 Chapters | 29 Volumes |
  1. The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You | MAL | AP
Ongoing | 220 Chapters | 22 Volumes | A comedy packed nuclear weapon of cuteness! These (not yet) 100 girlfriends will be sure to cheer you up! Get ready for wacky adventures and polyamorous hijinks with the world's most faithful boyfriend and his ever-growing harem!
  • Personally, my fav is Shizuka (she's such a lil smol bean!) followed by the HakaKara duo. The jokes just hit so good, from the many 4th wall breaks and clever references, to the endless amounts of fanservice from an array of ideal girlfriends! I just can't get enough
  1. Noragami | MAL | AP
    Completed | 109 Chapters | 27 Volumes |
  2. Nezumi no Hatsukoi | MAL | AP
Ongoing | 64 Chapters | 6 Volumes | Nezumi, a hitman raised by yakuza, falls in love with an ordinary man, Ao... but their normal romantic life is compromised soon after, and Ao is quickly dragged into Nezumi's bloody world in order to survive.
TW: Gore, Sexual Violence (in backstory)
  • This story really is both heartbreaking and heartwarming... a perfectly bittersweet romance of a couple who are just trying to love each other even though the world tries to tear them apart. God I'm such a sucker for this. Nezumi learning to love more, and Ao learning... well, I'm not gonna spoil it, just read the manga already!!
  1. Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun | MAL | AP
    Ongoing | 402 Chapters | 43 Volumes |
  • It's been a while since I've caught up with this, which is why it's lower on my list. It's very silly, heartwarming, and absurd, but it can also take it seriously and has some banger character arcs.
  1. Me no Mae no Kamisama | MAL | AP
    Ongoing | 34 Chapters |
  • An atypical manga with an even more atypical main character (and side characters). He's weird, but in a somewhat funny and relatable way. This is one of the more unpopular manga of the stack (which I don't get, personally), but I'd give this one a try personally. For sports otaku, it does focus on shogi somewhat, but it's definitely more about the main character's journey and building his self-confidence (despite his eccentricities). The pacing is a bit fast, but each arc is its own wild journey.

Webtoons/Webcomics:

  1. Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint
Ongoing | 261 Chapters | Kim Dokja was just a regular office worker with an uncanny obsession with a specific novel: Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World (TWSA for short). He'd grown up reading the novel, from middle school up to his office job. But when he eventually reached the conclusion... suddenly the world of TWSA was brought to life! Now it's up to Dokja to use his knowledge of his favorite novel to reach the ending of his own story.
  • I don't want to even see ANY comparisons to Solo Levelling, this shit is straight up incomparable peak. All the characters are written extremely well, things are foreshadowed so far in advance you'd forget by the time it was brought up, the strategies and worldbuilding are masterful, the comedy is pure gold... what more could you ask for? This is hands down the best webtoon- no, best story I've ever read.
  1. Aegis Orta
Completed | Val is an orphan who lives out his peaceful days devoted to God. His peaceful days quickly come to an end once his true nature is revealed, and he's forced to come to terms with his origins...
  • For the love of god PLEASE READ THIS it's so underrated (the text will load slowly so you have to wait. i hate that they removed all the translated chapters.) I can't help but feel for Val the entire time, but his progression and growth are exciting to watch. Not to mention, learning about the affairs of both Heaven and Hell were a journey, to say the least.
  1. Homeless / No Home
Completed | 270 Chapters | Haejoon Goh, a boy without a house to call his own, and Eunyung Baek, a troublemaker who resides in a tent, have a particularly unfortunate first impression. The two are forced to get along when circumstances bring them to living in the same abandoned dormitory, despite their mutual dislike of each other. How will this co-existence turn out for them?
  • Don't let the art style deceive you, these characters and the drama that happens in their day to day life are so well written, you'll get attached. Not to mention the hilarious jokes and the absurdity that is Eunyung Baek. He's such a little shit, LMAO, in the best and worst ways possible.
  1. Hand Jumper
Ongoing | Hiatus | 88 Chapters | Sayeon Lee despises Aberrants, and how they use their destructive powers to harm society. However, in a cruel twist of fate, she ends up being one herself. Forced to fend for herself in the Aberrant Corps and armed with an unusual power, how will she survive this deadly environment?
  • Sayeon Lee is one hell of a badass (and a bit of a weirdo lol). Her quick wit and intellect help her get around, and it's energizing to see her outsmart any opponents that get in her way. Watching her question her morals and spiral into insanity is the greatest part, imo. Every character has such gray morals that it's interesting to learn their backgrounds.
  1. One Step Closer to the Demon King
Ongoing | 185 Chapters | Yuria, the king of the sea, ascended to land to challenge the all powerful Demon King. However, the necklace that granted her human legs also greatly restricted her power. Despite this, Yuria meets companions, faces many setbacks, and travels on a wild journey on her quest to best the Demon King.
  • Yuria is a hilarious yet mysterious enigma. She acts child-like and is naive about the world above the sea, yet she also has a maturity of a being who's lived for hundreds of years. Also the world building is very intriguing, and every character seems to have their own motives, making them mysterious in their own right...
  1. The Novel's Extra
Ongoing | 133 Chapters | Hajin Kim, an author who writes webnovels, suddenly awoke in the universe of the novel he wrote! Unfortunately for him, this universe is a cruel one where only those with talent can thrive. Armed with the knowledge of his own creation, Hajin steels himself to escape his own world by following the plot. However, when inconsistencies arise, he realizes that reaching the ending may be more difficult than they initially seemed...
  • I've seen a lot of reincarnated into novels, but I rarely see any reincarnation into your own novel, haha. This shouldn't be compared to ORV though, since they both have their strengths. Also, they're completely different universes. I enjoy how pragmatic Hajin is, and how much the other characters look down on him is hilarious.
  1. Senpai Is an Otokonoko
    Completed | 100 Chapters |
  • I do have my gripes for how Ryuji was handled, his arc was a bit underwhelming and didn't get a clear resolution. I feel like I'd definitely like this a lot more if it was a bit more refined, honestly. Despite that, it's still very well written, and the gender expression and the characters discovering their romantic orientations felt really organic. In my opinion, the build up between Makoto x Aoi was very abrupt, and comes across as if he suddenly developed feelings despite not showing romantic interest in her early on. I feel like the most intriguing arc was Aoi's. As someone who's aroace, she's definitely on the aro spectrum and it was interesting to see how her feelings were handled. Either way, it's very much a worthwhile read and has beautiful art.
  1. Black Horda (old | new)
  1. How to Become a Dragon
Completed | 190 Chapters | What starts out as a light-hearted comedy about dealing with a dragon suddenly appearing in Young Yoo's life and demanding he pay for the sins of his ancestors turns into a heartfelt story of how to deal with pain, loss, and revenge.
  • All of the characters have enormous growth throughout the span of the series. I can guarantee it's a worthwhile read! Particularly Bari. His character arc was extremely well developed and it was amazing to see him mature over the span of the series, compared to the naive imoogi we had at the beginning.
  1. Lalin's Curse
Completed | Axed / No Ending | 45 Chapters | We follow David, a geek who proudly investigates anything related to the supernatural, and his skeptical friend Felix as they hunt for any signs of these phenomenon. But it turns out things are more dangerous than they first thought, and their life takes a crazy turn...
  • Despite being axed, the art is incredible, and the story isn't one to miss either! I wish we got to the see the mysteries concluded, but what we have now was still intriguing.

Anime Recs (in depth):

All Saints Street

  • A Chinese webtoon adapted into a donghua (Chinese animation)! Each episode is only a few minutes long.
  • The art style is very unique and the animation is fluid. Makes it stand out from other animations.
  • Fun Fact: The opening, 万圣街 (Wàn Shèng Jiē) composed by Dahenei Hang Tai, has both a Chinese and Japanese version! The Chinese version used the VOCALOID voicebanks Luo Tianyi, YANHE, Yuezheng Ling, and Mo Qingxian, while the Japanese version used the CeVIO voicebanks Sato Sasara and Suzuki Tsuzumi
  • Who's my favorite character, you ask? Well, obviously Neil :3c he's such a cutie patootie
  • If that wasn't enough to convince you, they even have their own really epic website! check it out!

Webtoon Recs:

Special Mention: Novels

I've only read one novel diligently, and it's quite honestly one of the best stories I've read, despite being about idols. You can tell that the author knows a lot about the K-pop industry, as both a fan and idol.

Ryu Gunwoo is a stoic orphan who possessed the body of another orphan, Park Moondae, with a cruel system providing an expiration date on his life lest he become an idol. As a past idol photographer, he uses his past knowledge to his advantage and joins an idol competition to achieve this harrowing goal, but slowly grows attached to the future members of his unit as the story progresses. They each form a good bond with each other over time.

Does this sound familiar to you? Of course, this webnovel is called......!
Debut or Die! | MAL | AP

Please give it a shot wholeheartedly! I'd love to talk about it with someone one day. Even if you aren't really into K-Pop (i'm in the same boat as you lol), it's still an extremely well-written work. I'm in love with Moondae's characterization (it's really heartwarming to see him gradually get closer to the other members)

if you want more (and personalized) manga recs, just hit me up on discord (howtheturnstable)! i'll be happy to oblige :3c
