Illinois Tech Turkish Students' Turkey Earthquake Relief Fundraiser
What happened?
On February 6, around 4:15 a.m. local time, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck south central Turkey near the Turkey/Syria border. It was followed by a M7.5 aftershock which struck 95 km (~60 miles) to the north. The quake that razed thousands of buildings was one of the deadliest worldwide in more than a decade, with the deaths surpassing even the toll from the 2011 earthquake off Fukushima, Japan, that triggered a tsunami, killing more than 18,400. At the time of writing, fatalities in Turkey alone is more than 40,000.
The area affected by the earthquake in Turkey, which spans 10 cities and has caused massive destruction in most of them, is roughly the same distance as that between Washington D.C. and New York City, and between Chicago and the Michigan state area.
