i laaab you jaewon HELLO1!! i made this rentry to talk about my favorite species of jellyfish known as turritopsis dohrnii or the immortal jellyfish because i love them somuch like ??? and yes it is kinda nerdy of me to do this but i love medusozoans and marine biology in general, so . . . (#`-_ゝ-) - i love them for MULTIPLE reasons but the first reason is because of how tiny they are, which is 4.5 millimeters like hello why are you so small you will die easily - another reason is because of their biological immortality! ok now for starters biological immortality is when the rate of senescence (the process of losing a cell's power of division and growth. Or in simpler terms, aging.) is stable or decreasing, which means that the risk of an organism dying by age does not increase over time or may start decreasing. Although, a biologically immortal organism can still die due to injury, illness, predation, etc . . - BACK TO JELLYFISH!!! Organisms that fall under the phylum Cnidaria are all able to regenerate and also go under senescence. An important thing to note is that the immortal jellyfish is NOT a true jellyfish/scyphozoan. It is a hydrozoan, just like the Portuguese man o' war. Hydrozoans are colonial organisms made up of zooids, which are specialized organisms/units that perform different functions in a being. I will now explain to you how the immortal jellyfish is biologically immortal!! When faced with high levels of stress, starvation, or injury, the immortal jellyfish uses transdifferentiation (the process of a specialized cell transforming into another type of specialized cell without reverting to a more primitive stem cell or progenitor.) to transform all of its cells from its adult medusa state, to turn into specialized cells that make up a polyp, continuing the regular process. This cycle can repeat indefinitely, making it biologically immortal !
