Chapter one
Marie always hated family gatherings. It was all so alienating, seeing these people she knew but didn't quite know. Her parents not so subtly implied if she wasn’t going to attend for the 5th year in a row, she wouldn't be given her monthly paycheck anymore. Fuck her entire life.
She planned on just standing around for a few hours and hoping no one came up to her. She hates small talk. It doesn’t make sense to her. She was doing pretty well. No one had bothered her as she tapped on her phone, writing down ideas for her podcast. She checked the time. She only had to stick around 15 more minutes. That was doable.
“Awww, Marie! Look at how tall you’ve gotten” One of her aunts came up to her.
“Thanks…” Marie mumbled as she put her phone in her jacket pocket. Damnit.
“Your mom told me you're out living on your own now. Got any roommates? A boyfriend, maybe?” She continued.
“Oh, uh…”
Suddenly a small bug net was swatted against the bare skin of her leg, causing her to flinch. It stung, but she didn't make a sound. That's going to leave a mark…
“Oh no, I'm so sorry!” A voice squeaked from behind her.
“Callie!” Her aunt gasped.
“I said I was sorry!” The little inkling grabbed Marie’s hand and tugged. As their eyes met, she felt like she was looking into a mirror. It made her feel giddy. “C’mon! We have to go get you to the medic!
“Sweetie, leave your cousin alone…”
“It’s… fine.” Marie breathed out, letting herself be dragged away by the girl. She looked back to her aunt. She nodded with a smile and turned around to speak to someone else. Relief rushed over Marie, but she wasn’t sure why.
She watched her cousin curiously. Black tentacles faded into a magenta that contrasted her own light-gray and lime ones. She’s never seen her before. Maybe she has, but it must’ve been when she was still in her juvenile form. She thinks she would’ve remembered her.
“I’m Callie, by the way. What’s your name?”
“Marie.”
“Okay Marie,” she stopped walking once they both ended up underneath a tree, “This is the hospital. Please, have a seat.”
Before she was able to protest about sitting on the grass, Callie tugged her down. Might as well indulge her.
“Okay! Now I’m going to make your leg feel all better!” Callie smiled and then began taking off her kimono.
Marie quickly shielded her eyes. “No, no! Don’t do that!”
“What- Oh, don’t worry! I have clothes on under. See?”
“Oh.” She lowered her hands. Callie was very much still wearing clothes. A pink shirt and a pair of denim shorts. Marie made a conscious effort not to stare.
Callie sat down and grabbed Marie’s leg. The pattern of the net left a red mark on her skin. The young inkfish frowned at this and then wrapped her kimono around the imprint like a bandage.
“There, do you feel better?” Marie nodded, and Callie smiled.
They stayed like that for a few precious minutes. Callie had begun plucking some grass out of the ground while Marie watched. She felt like she couldn’t tear her gaze away from the girl.
“Do you want to be an agent with me?” Callie blurted out.
“What?”
“I’m already Agent One, so you can be Agent Two. You can’t tell anyone, it's top secret.”
“Sure…” Marie felt her face flush. She didn’t understand what she was agreeing to, but she liked the idea of Callie trusting her. Don’t make this weird… “What do agents do?”
“Ummm, we like, save the world and junk.” Callie didn’t look up from the grass, continuously fidgeting. “We beat up bad guys, too. I’m gonna plow them all with my splat roller once I’m old enough to get one.”
“What do you mean? Aren’t you old enough already?”
“I’m eleven.” She giggled.
“Oh.”
“Yeah. My mom says I’m an early bloomer. What about you? How old are you?”
“…I just turned twenty-one.” Marie said weakly. This conversation was giving her whiplash. “I, uh, was an early bloomer too. Sorry. I just kind of assumed you were at least fourteen.”
“Hehe, it’s okay!” She stared at her. Those striking eyes stared up at hers. “Do you want to go on an agent mission with me?”
“Um..” Marie took out her phone to check the time. “I would, but I have to leave soon, actually.”
Callie’s smile was quickly replaced with a frown. Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around Marie, giving her a tight hug. “I don’t want you to go yet…”
Marie went still. Callie was warm and light. She inhaled softly, taking in the girl's scent. She smelled flowery and sweet. It made Marie shudder in her arms. “I’ll… I’ll see you at the next family get-together.”
“Please don’t go…” She hugged her tighter.
“I’m sorry…” Marie sighed. She cautiously put her hand on her small back. “I have to.”
“I don’t want you to go.” Callie repeated.
“…Why?” She asked.
“I dunno… You’re nice.” She pulled away to look at her and then poked her cheek. “And you have the same little dot on your face as me. And you didn’t yell at me when I thought there was a buggy on you. And you’re an agent now.”
“That’s true. Maybe you can ask your mom if I could watch over you some time…” Marie blushed. Was that too forward? She hoped not. She didn’t want to freak the poor girl out.
“Really!? You’d want to see me again?” Callie perked up.
“Y-yeah…” She nodded shyly.
Callie got up and started walking away.
“Oh, wait-“ Marie began unwrapping the kimono.
“You can keep it. You need it for your leg to feel better.” Callie laughed. “Doctor’s orders!”
“Are you sure?” The last thing Marie wants is for her mom to think she was a thief. Or a creep.
“Yeah! I’m going to ask my mom when you can come over! You can bring it back when your leg is healed!” She then turned around and ran her way back to the group.
Marie watched as Callie ran up to her aunt from before. Hopefully she says yes.
—
When she got home, she immediately headed to bed and checked her phone. She saw that she got a notification on Facehook. She didn't even know she had that app installed. It was a message from her aunt.
It read: Thank you for watching over Callie. I know she can be a bit of a handful sometimes. She seems to have really taken a liking for you! Does dropping her off at noon this Saturday work? Apologies for the short notice. If we have to reschedule, that's understandable. :)
Drop her off? Was her mom really okay with leaving Callie alone with her? Then again, it’s not like Marie wouldn’t do anything to hurt her. Right? Right.
She replied: Yeah, that works. Thanks.
She then hastily clicked on her aunt’s profile and was then flooded with images of family outings, all with Callie’s precious smile. She stared at the images, fixated. Callie seemed like such an active girl, always going on trips with her family. Maybe that’s why she hasn’t seen her before?
She looked away from her phone and grabbed the small kimono she had placed on her bed. Her heart skipped a beat when she realized just how small it was. She took the clothing to her face and smelled it without processing what she was doing. It smelled like her with a tinge of grass and sweat. Her face burned so much that she felt like she had a fever.
She pressed her legs together experimentally, quickly deciding that having the pressure against her definitely felt better. She’s never done this before. She knew enough about masturbation that this was probably highly immoral. She would be shunned if anyone found out about this. But they won’t, she reassured herself.
She’s never had a boyfriend or a girlfriend before, or even a crush. This all was so new and exciting. She felt like a kid again. She imagined playing with Callie and seeing that sweet smile. Making her laugh. Holding her close. Feeling her smooth skin.
Marie scrambled to get back on her phone, desperate to see her face again. She balled up the kimono and shoved it between her legs. She resumed her frantic scrolling, now all while shakily rocking her hips.
Callie was so so cute. She couldn’t stop staring at those golden eyes. Her lips looked so soft. Marie wondered what it’d be like to kiss her. Would she kiss her back or would she pull away, confused? Would she ask her what she was doing? Would she like it? Could Marie tell her it was just a game? Could she get away with it?
A part of her knew she should stop. Another part said the damage was already done. She couldn’t come back from this. She had always known there was something fundamentally wrong with her. Maybe this was it.
She wouldn't actually do anything to her, though, or at least that is what she wants to believe. She doesn’t want to hurt her. Marie knows from personal experience what it’s like. But it isn’t like Callie’s here right now. She can't be hurt from what she doesn’t know.
She wishes she could finish, but she can't. Her hips ache, she's exhausted, and her brain is currently running at 100 miles per hour. She might be having a mini panic attack. It's hard to tell.
Sluggishly she plugs in her phone, grabs the kimono from between her legs, and places it over her pillow. It's warm. It still smells of her, yet slightly sweeter than before. She sighs and closes her eyes. She hopes to dream about her.
