jan, (1921-1943) known by his pseudonym "rudy," was a scoutmaster of the grey ranks, a home army corporal and a quintessential figure of the polish resistance.
janek was arrested by the gestapo on the 23rd of march, 1943, after his address was found in one of his friend's notebook. during the investigation, he was beaten until he lost consciousness. when he fainted, he was revived by being kicked in the stomach and between the legs, and by having his hands trampled. his face and head were "stamped" with an anchor-shaped seal found during a search. however, by deliberately exposing his thigh to blows from sticks and whips, bytnar managed to hide a fresh scar from a gunshot wound sustained during the action on bracka street. as a result of the cruel methods used by the germans during the investigation, he was admitted to the pawiak prison hospital on the second day after his arrest with severe physical injuries and the first symptoms of uremia.
since he was no longer able to move on his own, he was taken on a stretcher for his next interrogation at szucha avenue. he was interrogated there once more on thursday, march 25. he was rescued by the assault groups during "operation arsenal" on friday, march 26, 1943, while being transported back to pawiak from the gestapo headquarters at szucha avenue following his interrogation.
on tuesday, march 30, in the afternoon, it was possible to organize the transportation of janek in critical condition by car to a hospital. he died shortly after being transported to the hospital, around 16:30, in one of the rooms on the first floor.
- on the 6th of may (rudy's birthday) 1943 tadeusz zawadzki and slawomir bittner shot and killed rudy's interrogator herbert schulz
- on the 22nd of may 1943 rudy's second interrogator ewald lange by other home army soldiers.
