The Appeal of Slave Leia
- Noah Berlatsky (The Guardian):
. . . The sequence with the giant bloated Jabba the Hut is a not-even-concealed Orientalist harem fantasy, complete with desert, chuckling dissipated bloated pasha and hapless princess decked out in fetishwear and chains. The sequence is a bit of soft-core porn dropped in the middle of a kids’ adventure story. Through the rest of the series (with the possible exception of A New Hope’s torture sequence) Leia is irascible, tough, empowered and, notably, completely covered. Then, all of a sudden, she’s a vulnerable, objectified sex toy. The dissonance is startling and stomach-churning.
- Tricia Barr (FANgirl Blog):
How many women haven’t been the victim of sexual objectification by a sleazy, shady, despicable, or maybe even downright creepy figure? That’s why Slave Leia resonates so clearly.
- Dwight Bowers (The Smithsonian):
. . . Leia is not a character that needs to be molded. She is exposed and temporarily humiliated, but she is in control, plotting her revenge. Ironically, and somewhat brilliantly, the vehicle for her revenge is the costume itself—she uses her own chains to strangle her monstrous captor.
- Amira Sa'id ("The Cult of Leia's Metal Bikini"):
I saw the movie when I was seven and I was absolutely thrilled by Leia -- what a wonderful character. Jabba put her into the outfit to humiliate her, but Leia was such a strong character, her will made the costume empowering.
Commentary on Leia & Her Enslavement
As per Luke Skywalker’s plan from earlier ROTJ scripts, he didn’t believe Han Solo could be rescued unless Jabba could be tricked into taking him out of his heavily-guarded Palace beforehand. Of course, Han would have to be unfrozen first, but it’s doubtful Leia intended to be ambushed by Jabba in the process.
