Special Containment Procedures :
SCP-039 is to be contained in a standard humanoid containment chamber at Site-17. The chamber must be furnished with minimal human accommodations (cot, desk, chair, sanitary facilities). Under no circumstances are personal items, toys, or non-essential furnishings to be introduced into SCP-039’s containment area without written approval from at least two Level 3 personnel.

When in its inanimate state (see Description), SCP-039 is to be stored within a secured glass display case in the center of the chamber, monitored via closed-circuit camera. When SCP-039 assumes its animate form, it is to be treated under the same protocols as a cooperative humanoid anomaly. Direct interaction is permitted only to staff with appropriate clearance and psychological screening.

Transition between SCP-039’s states is to be logged immediately, with precise time of change noted. Foundation medical staff must perform monthly health checks on SCP-039 during its animate form to confirm consistency with baseline human physiology.

In the event SCP-039 attempts to leave containment while in animate form, on-site security is authorized to utilize non-lethal deterrents. Lethal force is prohibited unless SCP-039 demonstrates hostility inconsistent with previous behavioral patterns.

Description : SCP-039 is a humanoid doll approximately 40 cm in height, constructed primarily of cloth, stuffing, and synthetic hair. Its design resembles a stylized young girl with disproportionately large circular eyes, pale fabric “skin,” and long black hair. SCP-039 wears a black dress patterned with white accents, along with striped stockings. The garment appears permanently attached to SCP-039’s body; attempts at removal have resulted in localized resistance similar to cutting through living tissue, despite SCP-039 being inert at the time.

At irregular intervals (ranging from 19 hours to 6 weeks), SCP-039 undergoes a spontaneous transformation into a human female (designated SCP-039-1). SCP-039-1 is physically consistent with a preadolescent human, though its physical appearance closely mirrors its doll-state: oversized dark irises, pale skin, long black hair, and clothing identical to those of SCP-039. SCP-039-1’s body shows standard human vital signs and biological responses, though subjects who have come into close proximity report a persistent sense of unease or “wrongness,” frequently described as akin to interacting with a ventriloquist dummy.

The transformation process occurs instantaneously, with no observable transition stage. SCP-039 retains awareness across both states, reporting continuous consciousness whether animate or inanimate. In interviews, SCP-039-1 demonstrates limited understanding of its own nature, referring to itself interchangeably as “the girl” and “the doll.”

While SCP-039-1 is capable of normal conversation and displays human-like emotions, long-term observation indicates that its affect and behavior are frequently imitative rather than spontaneous. It has been noted to mimic the speech patterns, mannerisms, and emotional tone of staff it interacts with, sometimes with unsettling precision.

To date, SCP-039 has not exhibited overt hostility. However, personnel are advised to maintain professional detachment during interaction, as prolonged exposure to SCP-039-1 has been correlated with mild dissociative symptoms in staff, including depersonalization and feelings of being “watched” during sleep.

Addendum 039-1 : Interview Log

Interviewed : SCP-039-1
Interviewer : Dr. ████
Foreword : This interview was conducted 47 minutes after SCP-039 transitioned into its animate state.

<Begin Log>

Dr. ████ : Good evening. How are you feeling today?

SCP-039-1 : [smiles slightly] I feel like a girl. Is that the right answer?

Dr. ████ : There isn’t a “right” answer. I’d like you to describe it in your own words.

SCP-039-1 : [tilts head] I was sitting very still for a long, long time. I heard your footsteps outside the glass. I heard the lights humming. Then—snap—I was me again. I always wait for that part.

Dr. ████ : Do you remember what it feels like when you’re… the doll?

SCP-039-1 : Oh, yes. It’s dark, but not empty. I can’t move, but I can see. I see everything around me, even when my eyes don’t move. Sometimes people forget I’m listening.

Dr. ████ : What do you see, exactly?

SCP-039-1 : You. Right now. And the man watching us from behind the glass. And the man behind him. [pauses, staring at Dr. ████] I can see the places where your skin doesn’t fit quite right.

Dr. ████ : …What do you mean by that?

SCP-039-1 : [giggles] Not yet.

Dr. ████ : Let’s talk about your name. Do you have one?

SCP-039-1 : [smiles again] I have as many names as you’ll give me. Would you like me to use yours for a while?

Dr. ████ : No, that won’t be necessary.

SCP-039-1 : [leans forward, whispering] You’ll say yes one day. They all do.

<End Log>

Closing Statement : Following the interview, Dr. ████ reported experiencing recurring dreams of being unable to move while seated in his office chair. Medical staff diagnosed symptoms consistent with mild sleep paralysis. Further interviews with SCP-039-1 are suspended pending approval by Site Director █████.

Addendum 039-2 : Recovery Log

SCP-039 was recovered on ██/██/20██ from the residence of ███████ family in ███████, England, following reports of “a living doll” made to local authorities. Embedded Foundation agents intercepted police dispatch after anomalous activity was flagged by routine monitoring of emergency service communications.

Upon arrival, agents found the residence abandoned, with signs of struggle limited to the second-floor child’s bedroom. A single doll (later designated SCP-039) was discovered seated upright on the bed. The walls of the room were covered with uneven handwriting in black marker, repeatedly stating “she’s not mine anymore” and “she keeps getting bigger.”

Family members were located three days later approximately 18 kilometers from the residence, in a public park. All three individuals were physically unharmed but displayed acute amnesia regarding SCP-039, the residence, and their own identities. Amnestics were administered, and the subjects were successfully reintegrated into civilian life under new identities.

Initial containment efforts were complicated when SCP-039 spontaneously transitioned into its animate form during transport. Field agents reported the entity speaking coherently and requesting “a window seat, please” while seated in the containment vehicle. SCP-039-1 complied with all commands and demonstrated no resistance.
