janek and "maly" aka jerzy masiukiewicz, a fellow resistance member!
alek was very sporty and athletic, he loved swimming and running, but his favorite sport was skiing!
alek was loved by everyone, he was described as very helpful, cheerful, optimistic, generous and kind overall. words taken from the book itself:
"Alek's leadership instincts were evident early on. They had nothing to do with "leadership", but had the character of a natural, friendly leadership. This tall, always smiling swagger, unable to speak calmly, experiencing every action and every problem, putting his whole soul into every conversation and every work, had something about him that attracted his colleagues to him. Whenever he walked down the street, you could see two or three boys next to him. Whenever he started tinkering with something in the school workshop, others would come over to look at his work, ask for advice. None of the boys could explain why they were drawn to Alek and why they were so eager to fulfill his wishes. Perhaps it was the unusualness of Alek that was at work here, searching for unconventional solutions in learning, games and life? But what could also be attractive about Alek was his exceptional honesty, directness and helpfulness, so great that it was sometimes even embarrassing."
