main rentry Figure of Guel Jeturk from the G.E.M. series on left side of the image. The center says, "Tubular's Rentry Guide; /kp001."

Alt text + fonts

Alternative text is vital for screen readers and when images fails to load. You can also use it to credit the artist.

  • Don't say, "an image of..." People know it's an image, and it can also overwhelm screen readers. Do mention if it's a gif.
  • Keep it 1-2 sentences, providing key details (character, emotion, pose, etc.).
  • Don't write alt-text if the image's decorative (dividers, pixels, etc.).
  • If you're using a font from something like dafont.com, mention what is says.

For example (my favorite mon btw),
gif of Hisuian Zoura by KingOfThe-X-Roads and hellfire0raptor on Deviantart. It's a light gray fox with yellow eyes, white fur with red accents, and dark brown feet. Alt: gif of Hisuian Zoura by KingOfThe-X-Roads and hellfire0raptor on Deviantart. It's a light gray fox with yellow eyes, white fur with red accents, and dark brown feet.

Please don't use fonts like 𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓼 and 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨. It breaks screen readers (which is ableist), so use markdowns or symbols instead. I recommend you enable an easy reader ACCESS_EASY_READ = /rentry_url.

Mention what the navigation says (something like A black TV with a heart that says, "next." From ohpixels on Tumblr.). It would be "next" in this case.

Color/Vision accessibility
  • Keep your color palette to 1-3 colors (excluding black), but a monochrome and a rainbow one is also okay.
  • Try to minimize bright colors or flashing graphics. If you want to use them, add SAFETY_PAGE_WARNING = adult/epilepsy/sensitive/custom. SAFETY_PAGE_WARNING_DESCRIPTION can further describe content/trigger warnings.
  • Adobe Color Wheel's accessibilty tool ensures color and contrast accessability (desktop only).
  • Toptal simulates CVD.
  • Webaim is contrast checker for links. You can underline the text (or both)!
Open languages

If I see another rentry that uses ୨୧ for "decoration," I'm beating their ass (I'm joking about the last part, but don't use ୨୧). ୨ is actually 2 in Odia, a language used by Odia people in India. That is considered a closed language, languages from cultures that cannot be used for "aesthetic" reasons (even if you are apart of said culture, you shouldn't use it like that). Treating languages as "just a cool symbol" is offensive to those who speak and write it, especially when some languages had/has experience erasure (the Cherokee language, for example). Here are some ways to avoid closed languages:
