WHO?
enter NARRATOR, PROTAGONIST.
ㅤㅤ
NARRATOR:
Growing up in a remarkably diverse family with a strong foundation in arts and literature, why did you not pursue a career in those fields?
PROTAGONIST:
Imagine being pressured to be the successor of your family's company your whole life, only for the said family be fucking broken before you reached the age of 22.
NARRATOR:
So, I take that as you don't speak to your family anymore?
PROTAGONIST: I just can't and won't be bothered to. I survived so much and lived so little when I was living with my parents. Enough is enough.
NARRATOR:
Fair point. Anyway, about your name. It sounds japanese but not exactly. What does it mean?
PROTAGONIST: My grandfathers, over drinking sake and cognac, came up with 'Ara', which means "harbringer of light" in Armenian, and 'Taiga', which means "big river" and "tiger" in Japanese. They wished I'd bring light wherever I go.
NARRATOR:
Alas, you're known as the all-black dude. Some people even say you look like a yakuza.
PROTAGONIST: Listen, I never intended this to be my personal branding, I'm just too lazy to dress up. Black looks good on me, after all.
NARRATOR:
I got to give it to you, that. Now, let’s backtrack to the bit about your family history.
PROTAGONIST: [groans]
NARRATOR:
Let’s see… Hmm, your father is a Japanese-British anthropologist and used to work as a professor of archaeology in the University of Cambridge and now he studies Indonesian cultures and humanities. Nice. Your mother is an Indonesian—Javanese—orphan who’s adopted by a French couple and used to work as a Liberal Arts professor, she paints and does pottery as a side hustle, cool. Your maternal grandfather was an Egyptologist who was appointed as the lead of an excavation campaign at Saqqara in 1974, excavated "Temple of Million Years" of Thutmose IV at Thebes, and translated many books about Ancient Egypt. Your paternal grandfather was a Japanese whose family runs the oldest onsen in the world, Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, and was the 51st generation’s patriarch.
PROTAGONIST: …Why is your face like that?
NARRATOR:
Dude… Your grandfathers were awesome! I wish they had been mine.
PROTAGONIST: [chuckles] I know right? They taught me a lot of things, too. And they were best friends. Can you believe that? Apparently their promise to be together forever was fulfilled because they passed away in the same year, 2004. It was a dark time for our family, that’s why my parents decided to move to Indonesia a year later.
NARRATOR:
Why Indonesia though?
PROTAGONIST: Because my grandfathers’ first and last vacation together as best friends was in Bali and they never shut up about it ever since. I guess my parents wanted to see for themselves… 'Sides, it's my mother's origin.
NARRATOR:
…And they decided to obtain Indonesian citizenship because they agree with Beloved Grandfathers that Indonesia is as wondrous as they said it to be.
PROTAGONIST: The motto, it’s because of the damn family motto. My parents are quite reckless sometimes. I mean, they did eventually get a divorce. [shrugs]
NARRATOR:
You don't fancy living in Indonesia, do you?
PROTAGONIST: [?] That must have been a rhetorical question.
NARRATOR:
...
PROTAGONIST: [groans] Who in their right mind fancies living in Indonesia? Come on. Even my parents decided to yeet out of this hellhole after their divorce.
NARRATOR:
Divorce, right. Happened in 2016, yes? What about you? Any plan of settling down?
PROTAGONIST: Marriage? Not at all at the moment. I'm afraid I'm still trying to heal from all the generational traumas. However, I'm aiming to get a job in Australia, New Zealand, or Switzerland and settle there for good.
NARRATOR:
We wish you the best of luck, lad.
PROTAGONIST: Thanks, I need that. [fist bumps the Narrator]
