"THE LIES OF LOVE (THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG)" - Rusty Cage (Heretics)

Back
According to Rusty ( ) :
"The idea behind this song is that it is an analysis of how concepts like love effect humans. . . .
So what sets us apart from the rest of the animal species is our ability to self reflect and be conscious of our instincts. When we start to try to explain our existence, we come up with concepts like "God" or "Love" to bring us comfort. . . Sometimes people will be "in love" with someone for a month, and then realize they weren't at all, and then later be "in love" with someone else, so on and so forth. This leads me to think that maybe there is something missing inside of the person that causes them a lack of happiness, to which they try to fill by attaching themselves to another person. They are assuming it is "love" they want, when really it is self satisfaction.
I could go into greater detail, but I will have you interpret love for yourself. "
.. And, well. That's what I do.

ANALYSIS

[Verse One Analysis]
"It's true that sometimes intuition ties the blinding folds
To contemplate not what
But why the way the mind will go"

People will often be blinded by love, only trusting their first thoughts and not thinking to think further. This can prove to be.. problematic. We as a human race do not know what our mind will or can do. Sometimes it plays the heart
It's so lovely at the start
But when the walls come crashing down
I take it all apart

Being in love can be the best feeling in the world, especially if it is something you have never felt before. Often, it is something that consumes most- if not all- of your time. When the feeling fizzles away, it can feel as if your entire world collapses. Arise my jaded cynicism, analyzing criticism
Every thought so skeptical
No mysteries are left at all
No silly romance fantasies
Are really how they're hoped to be

After having your heart broken in a bad relationship, you become skeptical of the world around you. "Jaded cynicism" is a combination of two terms that refers to being both tired and distrustful of something. No this is not a song of love
Just so damn reminiscent of it all

Well. [Chorus Analysis]
Whoow, intention
When you leave these things behind
I can't open up my mind at all
Whoow, intention

Even trying to forget the 'issues' from the first (and second) verses, it's hard to open up your mind to the possibility of love being a genuine thing. Having your heart broken can keep you set in your ways for a while, changing the way your mind works and how you trust people. Well I know, I know that love ain't real
But I can't deny the way I feel
I'd like to say I'll find the day
When no more will I feel this way
And if I never, very well
But only tests of time can tell

Love, at its core, is embedded in our genes as a survival tactic. This is why 'love at first sight' both is and isn't true- which, is a bunch of weird shit I won't get into. "I can't deny the way I feel . . ." onwards refers to loving someone out of your reach- somebody you cannot have, or feel you should not have. Letting them go is the easiest thing you can do, because it can prove for both of you how real your love is. Indulge the moment and then it's gone
But never for too very long
No this is not a song of love
Just so damn reminiscent of it all

When you stop to enjoy something - in this case, love - for even just a moment, it can be gone in the next. However, it is far too easy to fall back in love, so you may feel as if you haven't even lost this connection. . . "This is not a song of love" -- This is not, in fact, a song about love. Rusty is criticizing how love is viewed today, reminiscing over how he views love and how love has been historically. [Verse Two Analysis]
The fight to strive, genetic drive
Those early days of man
Replication and survive, to act not understand

Back to the idea of the early days. Before humanity really hit it off, reproduction was this really important thing. The human race needed to keep afloat. And, what usually happens with reproduction? Love. The two slowly evolved to come hand in hand, which is why it is uncommon (but, not rare, obviously) to see one without the other. This is really what the entire song is about- Love is genetic- just like the desire to survive. For every lost potential mother kills you from within
For fear of life's own preservation starts to settle in
Well I know it gets confusing and I know it's worth a try
When instinct tells you how to act but just won't tell you why

The fear that life won't be able to carry on can be .. scary. It's an eyeopener, and often a driving factor in many people's day to day life. Without realizing it, this is why many people do what they do each day- especially with matters relating to love. And as single souls are drawn together, passionate and blind
Just keep this simple thought in mind
That love is just a concept for the times

People are often drawn together based on instinct, which is typically based on their genetics. Especially when they're younger, they don't know what they're getting in to. "Passionate and blind" refers to how. Younger people are often the most passionate about what they love and believe in, but also tend to be the most blind when it comes to details. . And, well. Love is a concept made by people- that's what this song is about.
