MELANKOLIA

monologue ii:
consumption; said to be a fate worse than death
though i can't help but feel it's mine to own.
my weakened lungs drag light, aching breaths
but the sensation is unreal—well, to feel real.
after all, how can one hate the leech
and its bloodsucking nature; how can one feel
contempt for that which clings so desperately
to the flesh—it's flattery, that's what it is.
and such a deep flattery is, well, heavenly.
as my face drains of color, the life in my eyes
is lost to your cause, all i can do is smile
as warm arms surround me, and i am consumed.
