TITLE; FOUR REASONS WHY MIDDLE SCHOOLERS NEED RECESS ♡
life for middle schoolers is tough, dealing with a new place is hard to adjust to, and sitting in cramped chairs, with uniforms too. its hard to unwind, and take a break, and when they find out they dont have a designated time slot for them to unwind just a little bit, makes them hate the schoo and not wanna go.♡
R1 : ADOLESCENTS NEED TO UNWIND ♡
according to many child articles, and doctors, mandatory recess being taken away in middle schools will have a negative outcome.
Stated by Dr. Olga Jarret, She claims, "“Dr. Olga Jarrett, with her colleagues at Georgia State University’s Department of Early Childhood Education, approached an urban school district that had a no-recess policy. They received permission for two fourth-grade classes to have recess once a week so they could observe the children’s behavior on recess and non-recess days. Their results showed that the 43 children became more on-task and less fidgety on days when they had recess. 60% of the children, including five with attention deficit disorder, worked more and/or fidgeted less on recess days
proving my point about adolescents needing to unwind somehow. ♡
R2: ADOLESCENTS WOULD HAVE INCREASED MEMORY SPAN ♡
according to many child doctors, that children can be very fidgety due to not having a way, or a time to unwind and let loose just a bit.
Stated by Scholastic, it claims, “The elimination of mandatory recess spurred researchers to study its benefits on students. According to Scholastic, recess has positive cognitive, social, emotional, and physical outcomes for students. Physical activity increases blood flow, which sends oxygen to the brain. This process boosts neural connectivity and the growth of nerve cells in the learning and memory areas of the brain, which leads to improved attention and increased memory span, according to Edutopia. In addition, students who have this unstructured, physical time in their school day show an increase in creativity and problem solving.”
proving my point about adolescents needing to have recess to produce brain flow, have oxygen to the brain, and have increased memory span. ♡
R3: TAKING RECESS AWAY FROM ADOLESCENTS IS A BAD IDEA ♡
according to sociologist, Rebecca London, with Harvard EdCast, taking away Recess away from kids, especially as a punshiment, is a bad idea.
Stated by the Harvard EdCast, it states, “Sociologist Rebecca London knows that recess is an afterthought at many schools. Too often, it's just "a blank space in the middle of the day," she says, or a way to get some physical exercise for kids. She thinks it's time that educators rethink how to use that time to better support young students. In this episode of the Harvard EdCast, London shares ideas from her new book, Rethinking Recess, how to create a more inclusive recess, and why taking away recess — especially as punishment — is a bad idea for kids.”
proving my point about adolescents needing to have recess and not get it taken away from them as a punishment. ♡
R4: RECESS IS BENEFICIAL TO CHILDREN ♡
according to professor, Andrew Pellegrini wrote in 2008, stating his personal beliefs about recess.
Wrote by Andrew Pellegrini, it reads, ““As Professor Andrew Pellegrini wrote in 2008, “some claim that recess is a waste of valuable time that could be more profitably used for instruction,” but, he continues, “there is no theory or empirical evidence to support this point of view. There is, however, abundant and clear evidence that recess has beneficial effects on children’s social competence and academic performance.”
proving my point about adolescents needing to have recess to benefit their social and academic preformance.. ♡
these quotes and articles prove the point I am making because of the amount of doctors, professors, and important people talked about this topic and care about kids not having recess, it shows people care for the minds of adolescents, and shows how we can help. ♡
But what can I do to help more Middle Schoolers have recess??
talk to the school board in your district/community, sign potitions!! help other 6-8 schools experience recess again, after all, they are still growing! ♡
