I FUCKING LOVE AVENTIO RAHHHHHH "but they arent canon!!! Theyre not even gay!!!" oh yeah? then what's THIS??? โ†’ *vine boom sound effect* that's what I fucking thought. All jokes aside, I'm actually gonna get "serious" here and talk about some points on why Aventio is my favourite ship (I will TRY not to yap too much about Dr Ratio. DO NOT test me on my Dr Ratio knowledge. I am a cat in heat for this man. you have been warned. ) and yes I KNOW hoyoverse hasn't confirmed their relationship (probably because they CANT more on that soon) BUT I PROMISE IN NO BUBBLE WORLD IN THE ENTIRE SEA OF QUANTA DO THESE TWO JUST FUCKING "KNOW EACH OTHER" JUST HEAR ME OUT ON THIS (i may or may not be listening to the bayonetta soundtrack while writing this)

What is Queer Coding? Before I start this whole thing I have to explain what the fuck queer coding actually is, before moving onto what I think can be considered as queer coding in both Dr Ratio and Aventurine. Queer coding is a term used to describe subtle or obvious hints given to the audience to show that a character could possibly be queer in sexuality, gender, or both. Queer coding has a LONG history of both negative and positive connotations. In the case of Hoyoverse games, and games that are under the censorship laws of the CCP, they seem to use queer coding because they aren't really allowed to explicitly say the character is queer. As far as I can tell, and in my opinion, the queer coding in Hoyoverse games has positive connotations and representation. A common but nevertheless good example of queer coding in Chinese media has to be The Untamed. Now some media has slipped through the hands of the CCP's censorship. Since we're talking about Hoyoverse here, in their older game Honkai Impact 3rd, they have confirmed a couple WLW ships, which means its safe to assume Hoyoverse is open to the idea of queer relationships. If my description wasn't clear enough, here is the wiki page. If after reading that you're STILL not sure, here is a link to E's video on queer coding in Genshin Impact, where this QUEEN explains queer coding so perfectly from time stamps 4:20 - 9:58. I HEAVILY recommend watching E's videos because not only are they informative and educational but they are also SO FUNNY and I personally love her whole vibe .

Aventurine's Queer Coding For me, the most notable queer coding in Aventurine's design his colour pallet, which looks painfully similar to the colour pallet of a peacock. In-game characters have pointed this out, not just talking about his clothing but also the way he seems to carry himself. He even has peacock feathers on some of his outfits in various places. He birb :3. So what does all this peacock-like stuff actually point to? (or what COULD it be pointing to?). WELL, in the late 19th century and early 20th century, homosexual men would sometimes wear peacock feathers to represent or hint at their sexuality. Painters would also include peacock feathers in some illustrations to signify queer undertones in their art. However, one thing to note is that this was mostly only present in the west, and while Penacony is based on western culture, it IS possible that Hoyoverse did this unknowingly, but i personally think that a little unlikely. Here's a quick look at Aventurine's model and some examples of in-game references: Aventurine also compliments other men on their appearance, the most memorable lines being "It's Sunday, the most handsome man in Penacony~" and "Where's that handsome bust of yours?", with the latter being directed at Dr Ratio. This Reminds me of how March 7th was called "cute" by Robin (who is ALSO heavily queer coded). Aventurine's character actually conforms to quite a few gay stereotypes, most of which I don't really need to point out, as his flamboyant behaviour and slightly feminine voice are pretty obvious examples from the get-go.

Dr Ratio's Queer Coding This point isn't exactly queer coding, but I'd like to add it anyway to clear some things up. Despite Dr Ratio being rather cold and condescending towards Aventurine, there is proof that suggests he isn't completely heartless. A good example of this is the note that Aventurine was given near the end of the "A Walk Among The Tombstones" Penacony trailblaze missions: Context: In this mission there was a high chance that Aventurine's plan would have originally ended in suicide. Again, while this isn't actual queer coding, it is worth noting that Dr Ratio doesn't exactly hate Aventurine, which is a common misconception. In this specific part of Aventurine's "keeping up with star rail" video, after Owlbert mention's that Aventurine wanted Dr Ratio to explain his combat abilities for him, Dr ratio seems rather flustered and even denies it (which is so cute JSHDJSHJSH). There are so many moments where it feels like more is going on between them than simple friendship and it literally drives me insane.

Extra Points Both Aventurine and Dr Ratio wear sapphires. Whe sapphires are worn mutually by couples, it can signify their relationship with each other. Aventurine's sapphires: Dr Ratio's sapphires:

็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚ŠใฎใƒŽใƒผใƒˆ<3 WRITING THIS WAS SO FUNNNN!!! I feel propelled to write a similar post about TomoKazu because like queer ships (in one of my favourite games as well) + Japanese culture and poetry? you are FUCKING WITH ME its literally my favourite stuff all in one ship???
