"I want to be an MLB manager someday"...the '703-homer' legend turns guest lecturer

Legendary slugger Albert Pujols, 44, wants to become a major league manager one day.

"The legendary slugger said, 'I want to be a big league manager someday,'" The Athletic reported on May 5 (below).

Pujols is a legendary slugger who has played in 3080 games in the Major Leagues, batting .296 (114,211 at-bats, 3384 hits) with 703 home runs and 2,218 RBIs. His career OPS is .918 with a .544 on-base percentage.

He made his big league debut in a St. Louis uniform in 2001 and played for the Los Angeles Angels from 2012 to 2021 before returning to his hometown club in 2022 and retiring after the 2022 season.

After spending the last year working with the Major League Baseball office as a special assistant to Commissioner Rob Manfred, Pujols seems eager to get back on the field. Not as a player, but as a coach.

Pujols visited the Angels' camp in preparation for the 2024 season. "Pujols was at the camp for a week as a guest instructor," the media outlet said. "He's not on the major league coaching staff yet. But he used the opportunity to make it clear that this is where he wants to be in the future."

Pujols said yes to that question. "I'm going to be ready when the opportunity comes," he said.

Pujols was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2001, won three MVPs (2005, 2008, 2009), 11 All-Stars (2001, 2003-2010, 2022), two Gold Gloves (2006, 2010), six Silver Sluggers (2001, 2003-2004, 2008-2010), and two World Series championships.

After retiring from baseball, Pujols tried his hand at broadcasting, and he also mediated labor relations in matters involving players from his native Dominican Republic.

"Pujols, 44, doesn't necessarily want to be a major league manager. But it will happen, and he'll be ready. He's focused on what's in front of him, just as he was as a player."
