Why Is Robot Vacuum Cleaner Best So Famous

How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums can save you time and effort when it comes to regular cleaning. The best models do a great job of removing dust and other small particles, and most allow you to create no-go zones for pets or power cords.

The more expensive models even clean your floors--though they still can't climb stairs. Find models with intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.

Best Overall

The best robots we tested were reliable, user-friendly and able to keep up with daily debris. It is also important to choose a model that can take on stairs and has good ability to pick up carpets. If you're looking for a model that has additional features, you should consider an option that incorporates smart mapping technology or an app that allows you to control it remotely.

Camryn Rabideau is a contributing reviewer and writer for shopping at PEOPLE who has tested numerous robotic vacuums. She's a big fan of robotic vacuums that offer the greatest convenience, such as self-emptying bins and charging docks that automatically empty and refill water tanks for mopping robots. She also likes robots that detect landmarks such as furniture legs and power cords, so they don't get tripped up when climbing steps.

This robot from Black and Decker has a lower score on navigation and has less object-avoidance technology than the top-rated models. However, it does have an enormous dust bin that doesn't require frequent emptying and a long battery life. In addition, it has a feature that allows you to plan cleaning times and return to the place where it last stopped, making it easier to clean larger areas. This model is an excellent option for pet owners, as it can avoid hair tangles and food particles.

In our tests we tested the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combines a LIDAR sensor that is able to map rooms and see obstacles with a structured light sensor to identify objects and detect edges. It can stay clear of the steps, liquid droplets and furniture legs with this combination. It can also save up to four floor plans for later use. It is able to pause and resume the cleaning process at any point, so that you can continue doing chores while it works. The app includes the 3D image of your home, complete with room labels as well as advanced cleaning options.

While this robot can't clean as well as our top-rated models but it excels in picking up fine debris such as baking soda and sand as well as larger items, such as orzo pasta and screws made of metal. Its only drawbacks are that it isn't able to mop and has a less impressive navigation system.

Best for Carpet

If you have carpeting, choose a robot vacuum that scores high for rug and carpet maneuverability and pickup. Many models are capable of collecting dust from low-pile carpets, and some do a decently job of sweeping up heavier debris, such as orzo pasta and screws made of metal. However, they can't handle fine particles as well as canister or upright vacuums and can miss ground-in dirt close to baseboards and thresholds.

For carpeted homes, a 2-in-1 robotic vacuum/mop is the best choice. You can exchange a cleaning bin for a damp mopping mat. The Roborock Q Revo, for example, is a vacuum cleaner and mops with circular pads that rotate at a speed of 200 rotations per minute. It automatically detects and lifts the pads when it encounters carpet, preventing it from soaking the floor. Additionally, you don't have to take them off or replace them after each use. The Q Revo is also better than other robot vacuum/mops at avoiding obstacles such as rugs and thresholds and avoiding obstacles.

The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another option worth considering. It was a great performer in our tests and you can program it to tidy your home while you are away. It can also be set to only mop and we loved its remarkable navigation on bare floors and rugs and its ability to get over and up onto furniture. The Combo i5 has a long runtime and excellent path planning for an item of this size.

If you're looking for a high-tech vacuum Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a fantastic option. It comes with a large dock that can last for weeks and not need to be emptied. It also has amazing ability to navigate and auto-empty on carpets and bare floors. It also has an intelligent mapping system that can be programmed to operate during certain hours of the day (a useful feature that can keep mischievous kids and dextrous pets from causing chaos). The Shark isn't as powerful as other mop/robot combinations however, it still picks hair and pet hair extremely well. It's also the best value of our top choices.

Best for Hard Floors

Robot vacuums are the best option for hardwood floors since they are able to maneuver around obstacles without damaging bare surfaces. They are excellent at picking up dust and crumbs but struggle with pet hair and larger debris. They don't have the suction power of a high-end upright or canister vacuum, so they're not the ideal option for rooms with carpets or upholstery that requires deep cleaning.

The best two-in-one robots combine a vacuum and a mop, taking care of a more complete chore in one sweep. Look for a model that has an onboard sensor that can detect changes in the floor's texture and adjust suction accordingly. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+ for instance, has this feature and can move seamlessly from soft to hard carpeting.

If your home is mostly made up of hardwood floors, consider a robotic vacuum and mop combo like the eufy S1 Pro. This model has an impressive robotic vacuum that has smart navigation that can clean hardwood and other surfaces. It also mop. Its sensors let it stay clear of hazards like stairs.

The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, instead of simply swab them in order to remove dirt and dust. The pads that are reusable reduce waste and spread fewer germs. They can also be cleaned in the docking stations to save time. The mops can also be washed and dried to avoid spreading mold.

Both the robovac and mop can be controlled from your smartphone to make it easier to manage the device. For instance, you can utilize the app to create no-go zones that the vacuum won't enter, or to label rooms, or schedule specific cleaning sessions. The Eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that collects debris through a trapdoor, and stores it in a bagless or disposable bin, so you don't need to empty the bin manually as often as you do with other models.

Ideal for small Spaces

These robots are designed for small spaces. They have smaller bins that can hold less waste, and they're more efficient than larger models in navigating tight corners. They can also be tucked under furniture, where the larger robots struggle to get in. They are also less expensive than more expensive models, however you will need to empty their dirt compartments manually at the end of each cleaning session.

A few years ago robotic vacuums experienced a major change. Manufacturers started adding sensors that allowed them to navigate and avoid household items that traditional sensors might be stuck on or across. These advances have reduced the number of times our testers had to clean up after a robotic snag, whether it was a power cord, a toy, or piece of pet waste.

The new sensors haven't eliminated all issues with these devices however. The less expensive models are not able to traverse the same obstacles as older models, and they need a certain level of light to be able to be able to see where they're going. If vacuum deals are living in a dark space or have lots of furniture with low-profiles, consider purchasing top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space, like our top overall and runner-up choices do. This lets them work in the dark and avoid obstacles like stairs.

In addition to being capable of working in dark they can also be programmed to use their cliff sensors only on or near the floor, not when they're above them. You'll still want to cover any mirrors that could interfere with this function, however, since the laser used by a laser-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces, causing the robot to think it's in another room.

A few of the models we recommend also allow you to create virtual no-go zones in areas where you do not want the robot to go, which is useful if you have small pets or children. These features aren't offered on all the models we test so make sure to go through our complete reviews of the models below before making your purchase.
