How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I don't know what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.
Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. 5. Tachometer
