Kang So-hwi, 3-year contract worth 2.4 billion won Women's volleyball becomes 'salary queen'

Heungkuk Life Insurance's salary cap is tied and cannot be exceeded even if Kim Yeon-kyung signs a contract for the new season.

A professional volleyball women's player has emerged who surpasses the value of 'volleyball queen' Kim Yeon-kyung (36, Heungkuk Life Insurance).

The Korea Expressway Corporation announced on the 12th, “We signed a three-year free agent (FA) contract with Kang So-hwi (27, photo) for a total of 2.4 billion won.” Kang So-hwi receives an annual salary of 500 million won plus 300 million won in options during the period of his contract, for a total of 800 million won. Kang So-hwi is the first player in the history of the women's professional volleyball division to receive 800 million won per year. Previously, the record was that Kim Yeon-kyung and Park Jeong-ah (31, Pepper Savings Bank) received a total of 775 million won last season.

Professional volleyball has been operating a salary cap (cap on total annual salary) system since its inception (2005). Starting with the 2020-2021 season, the maximum amount that a specific player can receive each season is also set in advance. The Korean Volleyball Federation (KOVO) confirmed the women's salary cap for the 2024-2025 season at 3 billion won, 100 million won more than the previous (2.9 billion won), and also increased the maximum player compensation from 775 million won to 800 million won. For this institutional reason, even if Kim Yeon-kyung signs a contract with Heungkuk Life Insurance for the new season, she cannot surpass Kang So-hwi's price.

The Korea Expressway Corporation took the top spot by defeating Heungkuk Life Insurance in the championship match of the 2022-2023 season, but in the 2023-2024 season, it finished 6th in the regular league and could not even enter the 'Spring Volleyball' stage. An official from the Korea Expressway Corporation said, “I felt the vacancy in domestic strikers greatly this season. “We decided to recruit Kang So-hwi because we thought he could fill this role,” he explained. Kang So-hwi scored 444 points in 35 games in the 2023-2024 regular league season. The only domestic ‘wing striker’ with more points than Kang So-hwi was Kim Yeon-kyung (775 points). On the other hand, Korea Expressway Corporation did not have a single domestic player in the top 10 in scoring rankings.

Kang So-hwi, who is also a junior of Kim Yeon-kyung's Wongok Middle School, was selected by GS Caltex as the first overall pick during the 2015-2016 season rookie draft when she was about to graduate from Wongok High School. He continued to play for GS Caltex for the next 9 seasons before changing teams. So-Hwi Kang said, “It’s a shame to leave the team he was so attached to, but he decided it was right to expand his volleyball experience through a new challenge. He said, “Please support my new volleyball life.”
