Greeting gift

Known as temiyage, with the literal translation 'handheld gift.' When visiting someone's home, a greeting gift is customarily given as a gesture of goodwill and hope for a cordial relationship. Common greeting gifts include snacks or alcohol. They should be wrapped in paper or cloth and offered to the host with both hands. It is also considered good manners to give a brief explanation as to why you chose that item.
