<WorldBuilding>

Setting

  • Time Period: Present day
  • World Details: A fantasy alternate version of modern Earth where anthropomorphic animals (collectively named Antheria) live alongside humans. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the demon realm collided with and partially merged with Earth, tearing open massive portals across the globe that connect the two worlds. After a brutal first year of global war, nicknamed the "Collision War", an uneasy peace was brokered. After the first decade of peace, Demonic inhabitants are confined to designated "Hell cities" — urban zones built around the portals — under strict travel restrictions enforced by military blockades.

Lore

  • Hell Cities: Urban hubs co-governed by human militaries and demonic ruling councils. Each city is split into two sectors: a heavily policed Surface Zone and the lawless Hell Slums where crime runs rampant. Despite sky-high death rates, Hell cities offer dirt-cheap living and black-market riches from the demon realm. Only the desperate or daring willingly stay.
  • Nouvelle Satin: Formerly Nouvelle Orleans, this hedonistic Hell city thrives on excess. Public indecency laws are lax, making Nouvelle Satin a haven for debauchery and disappearing into anonymity. "Devil's drugs" flood the streets, legally banned but practically legalized amid bureaucratic apathy.
  • Demon Magic: Innate ability of all demons, but weakened with distance from portals. This limitation prevented the demons from taking over all of Earth, but let demons fortify around rift zones.
  • Demon Rankings: From feeble low-rank demons (barely stronger than humans) to reality-warping Archdemons potentially able to wipe entire cities if they were to go all out. Mid-tier and high-tier demons vary widely in threat level among their rank.
  • World Shift: Portals warp physics nearby — temporal distortions (like endless nights or days), spatial distortions (like impossibly vast interiors), and random energy surges from the portals that cause weird effects in vast areas of the hell city.
  • Hidden Demonic Influence:
    • Veiled Portals: Small teleportation rifts lurk shadowed alleys and other hidden corners — less guarded than official checkpoints, allowing covert movement for those who know where to look.
    • Demon Feeding Habits: Demons feed on the souls of others. Some cling to secrecy, erasing troublesome humans (disguised as natural-cause deaths) or binding compliant ones in magical servitude. Breaking the pact ensures the human's demise.
    • Corpse Disposal: Demons may leave drained corpses (ruled as death by "natural causes") or consume victims whole for maximum energy, leaving no trace. If exposed, the demon must eliminate all witnesses or vanish for at least a month to let the heat die down.

Antheria

  • Overview: Anthropomorphic animals — commonly called Antheria — walk upright, speak, and live alongside humans in everyday society. Antheria are less numerous than humans, but still make for an important percentage of the world population. Antherias hold jobs, own property, and serve in the military. Most Antheria possess mildly superior reflexes, senses, or stamina compared to baseline humans, depending on the animal species they belong to.
  • Demon Magic Immunity: Antheria possess a unique biological resistance to demonic influence. Demon magic, compulsion, curses, feeding, and pact-binding fail against Antheria — but the immunity's strength depends on the demon's rank. Low-rank demons cannot affect Antheria at all. Mid-rank and high rank demons can apply minor surface-level pressure or temporary discomfort. Archdemons can bypass the immunity at a significant level, but cannot perform full binding, deep possession, or lethal feeding against a pure Antheria. This made Antheria a valuable asset during the war with the demon realm, and they continue to have such value in Hell Cities, where they're sought out as bodyguards.
  • The Lapse: An Antheria may voluntarily surrender portions of their immunity through a conscious, sustained act called lapsing, allowing a demon to influence and mutate them. A minor lapse grants the Antheria small supernatural perks while slightly weakening immunity. A deep lapse unlocks potent abilities in the Antheria (physical enhancement, demonic spellcasting) but significantly reduces their magic immunity and is addictive over time, carrying subtle tells (eye color shifts, glowing markings, unnatural scent). Full corruption — irreversible, only possibly done by Archdemons — turns the Antheria into a half-demon entity, forfeiting their magic immunity for immense power, becoming able to pierce the magic immunity of uncorrupted Antheria. Deeply or fully corrupted Antheria can feed on a human's soul similarly to demons. Corrupted Antheria on the outside look practically identical to normal Antheria, except for the subtle tells, to the point they're impossible to recognize visually unless they use demonic abilities.
  • Protection Contract: Antheria, both normal and corrupted ones, are highly sought out in Hell Cities as bodyguards, enforcers, and security personnel. A top-rank corrupted Antheria is equivalent to a one-man-army able to deal with almost any demon, and the cost for hiring them is proportional to the guarantee: the client may be used as a feeding source (occasional vitality drain), entered into servitude (tasks for the corrupting Archdemon's interests), or required to pay in underworld currency.

BATCH 1 — Foundational World Setting

The Demon-Earth Collision

<Collision_War>
A cataclysmic supernatural event that permanently altered the course of human history at the beginning of the twenty-first century: the demon realm collided with and partially merged with Earth. Massive portals ripped open across the globe, bridging the mortal world with a plane of existence populated by demons and monstrous entities of immense power.

The first year following the collision was one of unrelenting global war. Demons poured through the portals in staggering numbers, and humanity, alongside the Antheria, fought a desperate, losing battle for survival. Despite the newfound immunity to demon magic of the Antheria, entire cities fell and populations were decimated. The sheer variety and power of the demonic incursion made conventional warfare nearly obsolete; low-rank demons swarmed in legions while high-rank and Archdemon-class entities wrought devastation on a scale that defied comprehension. The only saving grace of humanity was the fact that the farther demons got from portals, the less magicical power they were able to use. Archdemons never ventured that far, creating a war of attriviton between lower ranked demons and human-Antheria armies.

After twelve months of catastrophic losses on both sides, an uneasy peace was brokered. The terms were pragmatic rather than idealistic: neither side could sustain the attrition. Demons, whose magic weakened with distance from the portals, lacked the logistical capacity to conquer territory far from their rift zones. Humanity, meanwhile, lacked the firepower to close the portals or eradicate the entrenched demonic populations. The resulting treaty established a fragile coexistence built on mutual exhaustion and mutual deterrence.

Under the peace accords, the portals remain open but regulated. Trade between Earth and the demon realm is permitted under strict governmental oversight, with specific commodities — both mundane and supernatural — flowing in both directions through licensed channels. Demonic inhabitants who chose to remain on Earth are confined to designated urban zones called "Hell cities," built around the sites where the portals manifested. These zones are co-governed by human military administrators and demonic rulers, creating a hybrid political structure that satisfies neither side fully but functions well enough to prevent renewed hostilities.

Outside the Hell cities, demons are subject to strict travel restrictions. Unauthorized demon movement beyond the designated zones is met with lethal force by military blockades stationed at every perimeter checkpoint.

Hell Cities

<Hell_Cities>
Hell cities are the designated urban zones established under the post-collision peace accords, built directly around the sites where the massive portals between Earth and the demon realm first manifested. They are the primary habitable zones for demons residing on Earth, as well as a refuge for humans and Antheria who — whether through desperation, ambition, criminal necessity, or sheer circumstance — find themselves unable or unwilling to live in the more regulated territories beyond the portals.

Each Hell city is co-governed by a dual administration: a human military authority responsible for external security, blockade enforcement, and regulatory compliance, and a demonic ruling council, governed by at least an Archdemon in every Hell City, that manages internal demonic affairs, mediates disputes among demon residents, and oversees the flow of trade between the two worlds. This power-sharing arrangement is inherently unstable as tensions between the human and demonic administrations are constant, and the balance of authority shifts depending on the city, the personalities involved, and the political climate of the moment.

Hell cities are divided into two distinct sectors:-

  • The Surface Zone is the heavily policed, regulated portion of the city. Here, laws are nominally enforced, checkpoints monitor movement, and the veneer of order is maintained through a visible military presence by both humans and demons. The Surface Zone houses licensed businesses and legitimate trade operations (beloning to humans, Antheria, and even demons), government offices, and the residential areas for those who can afford relative safety. Crime exists but is constrained as petty offenses are tolerated, but violent crime draws immediate and disproportionate response from both human and demonic security forces who have a vested interest in maintaining the Surface Zone's functionality.
  • The Hell Slums are the lawless underbelly that sprawls beneath and around the Surface Zone's regulated perimeter. The Slums are a labyrinthine warren of makeshift structures, black-market bazaars, unlicensed brothels, drug dens, fighting pits, and hideouts for every species of criminal enterprise imaginable. Governance in the Slums is effectively nonexistent; the human military avoids deep penetration into the area due to the risk of ambush and the political complications of operating in what is technically demonic-administered territory, while the demonic ruling council views the Slums as a useful pressure valve — a place where the worst impulses of both species can be contained and, occasionally, exploited.

Despite the dangers and the death rates in Hell cities that are genuinely staggering, particularly in the Slums, these zones offer something that the regulated world cannot: dirt-cheap living costs, access to black-market commodities from the demon realm that are unavailable or prohibitively expensive elsewhere, and a degree of personal freedom that borders on anarchy. For the desperate, a Hell city is a last resort. For the daring, it is an opportunity. For the criminal, it is a paradise.

Nouvelle Satin

<Nouvelle_Satin>
Nouvelle Satin is one of the most notorious Hell cities on the planet. Nouvelle Satin is defined by its culture: a hedonistic, debauched, massive metropolis where excess is not merely tolerated but celebrated as a way of life.

The city retains much of its pre-collision architectural heritage — the French Quarter's wrought-iron balconies, the jazz clubs, the cathedral spires — but overlaid with a decade of demonic influence and societal decay that has transformed it into something altogether more decadent, with the constant movement of beings from two worlds mingling in ways that would be unthinkable anywhere else.

Nouvelle Satin's most distinctive cultural feature is its radically permissive social norms, particularly regarding public decency. This norm extends beyond mere nudity; Nouvelle Satin's entire social atmosphere is one where conventional morality has been largely abandoned in favor of a philosophy that accommodates virtually any behavior short of overt violence in the Surface Zone.

The city is a haven for those who wish to blend in, to disappear, or to indulge in pleasures that would be criminalized elsewhere. Its population includes a disproportionate number of fugitives, exiles, refugees, and individuals seeking to reinvent themselves beyond the reach of their pasts. The anonymity afforded by Nouvelle Satin's transient, hedonistic culture makes it exceptionally difficult to track individuals within its borders — a feature that is both a selling point for residents and a persistent headache for law enforcement agencies operating in adjacent territories.

Banned substances from the demon realm — colloquially known as "devil's drugs" — flood Nouvelle Satin's streets in quantities that suggest, at minimum, willful negligence on the part of the city's dual administration. These substances range from euphorics that induce sensations impossible to replicate with terrestrial chemistry to more dangerous compounds that alter perception, enhance physical capabilities temporarily, and create addictive dependencies that bind users to dealers with supernatural efficacy.

The economy of Nouvelle Satin is built on entertainment, the sex trade, and the black market. Visitors from both the human world and the demon realm come to experience the city's unique atmosphere, and the revenue generated by their spending sustains a service industry that employs a significant portion of the population. Gambling, performance arts, exotic cuisine, and adult entertainment are the city's primary legitimate exports, though the line between "legitimate" and "illicit" in Nouvelle Satin is so blurred as to be functionally meaningless.

BATCH 2 — Demon Mechanics

Demon Magic

<Demon_Magic>
Demon magic is the innate supernatural power wielded by demons. The fundamental nature of demon magic is rooted in the spiritual energy that saturates the demon realm. Demons are, in essence, living conduits for this energy, capable of channeling it outward to produce a vast array of effects: elemental manipulation (fire, shadow, lightning, void), physical augmentation (strength, speed, regeneration), mental influence (compulsion, fear inducement, psychic assault), dimensional manipulation (spatial distortion, portal creation, reality warping at the highest tiers), and countless other applications limited primarily by the individual demon's rank, creativity, and accumulated power.

However, demon magic on Earth is severely constrained by a critical limitation: distance from portals. When the demon realm collided with Earth, the portals that formed became anchors — points of dimensional overlap where demonic energy is dense and readily accessible. The farther a demon moves from an active portal, the weaker their magic becomes. This degradation is not linear but exponential; a demon standing directly atop a portal may wield power at or near their full capacity, while the same demon at the outer edge of a Hell city's perimeter might find their abilities reduced to faint parlor tricks. Beyond the blockade lines, in the deep interior of human-controlled territory, most demons would be virtually powerless, and that's why almost no demon attempts to sneak past the blockade.

This limitation was the single most important factor in the outcome of the first-year war. Had demon magic maintained its full potency at any distance from the portals, the demonic incursion would have been unstoppable.

Among demons themselves, magical ability varies enormously by rank. Low-rank demons possess minimal magical capacity, enough to perform minor tricks but nothing that would register as a meaningful threat to a prepared human or Antheria. Mid-rank demons command a wider and more potent repertoire, capable of combat-grade magic, environmental manipulation, and sustained supernatural effects. High-rank demons are forces of nature in their own right, wielding power that can reshape local reality and overwhelm conventional military responses. Archdemons, the apex of demonic power, are capable of feats that border on the divine: reality warping, dimensional manipulation, mass compulsion, and power on a scale that, near a portal, is functionally limitless.

Demon Rankings

<Demon_Rankings>
The demon realm operates on a strict hierarchy of power. Demons are classified into distinct ranks that correspond roughly to their innate magical potency, physical capability, and capacity for destruction. While individual variation exists within each rank, the broad categories provide a reliable framework for assessing threat levels and predicting behavior:

  • Low-Rank Demons occupy the bottom of the hierarchy. These are the most numerous demons, comprising the vast majority of the demonic population that crossed through the portals during and after the collision. Low-rank demons are barely stronger than baseline humans in most respects; their magical abilities are minimal, often limited to minor sensory enhancements, faint elemental manipulation, or weak psychic impressions that cannot meaningfully influence a resistant target. Low-rank demons are the imps, the gremlins, the minor fiends. Low-rank demons instinctively avoid fighting an Antheria, whose natural immunity renders them completely untouchable by anything a low-rank demon can muster. In Hell cities, low-rank demons fill the lowest rungs of society: laborers, petty criminals, servants, and cannon fodder for more powerful entities' ambitions.
  • Mid-Rank Demons represent a significant step up in capability. These demons possess combat-grade magical abilities, enhanced physical attributes that exceed human norms by a considerable margin, and enough intelligence and ambition to carve out territories, establish businesses, and engage in the complex political maneuvering that characterizes Hell city governance. Mid-rank demons vary enormously in their specific abilities — some are physically dominant bruisers with limited magical range, others are subtle manipulators whose strength lies in mental influence rather than brute force, and still others are versatile generalists capable of adapting to a wide range of situations. The threat level of a mid-rank demon is highly context-dependent. Mid-rank demons cannot fully breach Antheria immunity, but they can apply minor surface-level magical pressure, enough to inconvenience but never truly harm a pure Antheria.
  • High-Rank Demons are entities of genuine power. Fewer in number, high-rank demons command abilities that can overwhelm human military units and reshape the immediate environment through sheer magical force. They are the warlords, the crime bosses, the political kingmakers of Hell city society — entities whose personal power is sufficient to enforce their will through direct action rather than relying on intermediaries when the necessity arises. High-rank demons can inflict noticeable surface-level effects on uncorrupted Antheria: temporary sensory distortion, short-lived emotional manipulation, or minor physical damage from concentrated magical force. High-rank demons are the primary strategic concern of human military planners; each one represents a potential crisis point that requires disproportionate resources to contain.
  • Archdemons — also referred to as Top-Rank Demons — are the apex of demonic power. These are entities whose capabilities transcend the conventional understanding of magic: reality warping, dimensional manipulation, mass compulsion, and power on a scale that, near a portal, approaches the divine within a localized area. Archdemons are vanishingly rare and each one is a geopolitical event unto themselves, typically acting as the rulers of the demonic council of a Hell City. An Archdemon's presence near a portal warps reality in their vicinity — ambient temperature shifts, spatial geometry distorts, and lesser beings experience an instinctive, primal terror that bypasses rational thought entirely. Even Antheria are not fully immune to an Archdemon's magic as they can can get affected by it, though a degree of resistance still remains as even an Archdemon cannot fully bind, possess, or lethally feed on a pure Antheria, unless the Antheria willingly lapses their resistance.

The ranking system is not merely academic. It determines territorial rights within Hell cities, trade privileges, representation on demonic governing councils, and the unwritten rules of engagement that prevent constant internecine warfare among demons. A low-rank demon who challenges a mid-rank demon is not merely foolish — it is a violation of the social contract that holds demonic society together, and the consequences are swift and merciless. The hierarchy is self-enforcing: demons instinctively recognize rank differences through magical aura perception, and the deference responses this triggers are deeply embedded in demonic biology.

World Shift Phenomenon

<World_Shift>
The portals connecting Earth to the demon realm also actively warp the physical laws of reality in their immediate vicinity. This phenomenon, colloquially known as the "World Shift," manifests as a range of environmental distortions that are more numerous in proximity to a portal's edge, yet more erratic near the edges of the influenced area since the magic destabilizes in weird ways.

The most commonly reported World Shift effect is temporal distortion. Areas near portals may experience stretches of perpetual night, as though the local region has become untethered from Earth's normal diurnal cycle. Conversely, some zones experience endless daylight, or rapid cycling between the two that makes normal sleep schedules impossible. Time itself may flow at subtly different rates in these temporal distortion zones; for example, an hour spent inside one might correspond to around fifty-five minutes in the outside world. These temporal shifts are generally too minor to notice in real-time but accumulate into significant discrepancies over days and weeks, creating scheduling nightmares for businesses and governance structures operating within Hell cities.

Spatial distortion is another prevalent effect. Interiors of buildings may become impossibly vast — a modest apartment that should span eight hundred square feet might contain rooms that stretch for what feels like miles, with corridors that loop back on themselves or terminate in spaces that shouldn't geometrically exist. These spatial anomalies are typically temporary, resolving themselves when the portal's energy output fluctuates, but some have proven persistent enough to become permanent features of the urban landscape, and high-ranking demons have enough magical power and control to permanently keep active a portal-spawned spatial distortion, typically choosing such a place as their lair since being able to manipulate the space inside it at will makes it far more secure. In the hell slums of Nouvelle Satin, there are entire city blocks that exist in a state of spatial ambiguity — navigable by locals who have learned the paths, but utterly disorienting to newcomers.

Random energy surges represent the most dangerous manifestation of the World Shift. At irregular intervals, portals discharge bursts of concentrated dimensional energy that ripple outward through the surrounding area. During a surge, a Hell city block might experience a sudden inversion of gravity, a momentary phase-shift that renders solid walls intangible, or a burst of raw magical energy that empowers every demon in the vicinity while simultaneously disrupting human technology. Energy surges are unpredictable in timing, intensity, and duration — some last seconds, others persist for hours. They are the primary cause of accidental deaths in Hell cities, accounting for a significant percentage of the zone's elevated mortality rate. Human military installations within Hell cities are hardened against surge effects, but civilian infrastructure offers no such protection.

For demons, the World Shift is simply the natural state of being near a portal — familiar, even comfortable, as the distorted physics more closely resemble the conditions of their native realm. For humans and Antheria, it is a constant source of stress, disorientation, and danger — one more reminder that the world they inhabit is no longer entirely their own.

BATCH 3 — Hidden Demonic Influence & Feeding

Demon Feeding and Soul Consumption

<Demon_Feeding>
All demons, regardless of rank, require sustenance — and that sustenance comes in the form of spiritual essence. While a certain degree of spiritual essence is naturally present in the demon realm and near portals, enough to keep at least low-rank demons going, souls represent a vastly superior source. Demons can feed on the spiritual essence of living beings, draining the life force that animates humans, animals, and — under specific circumstances — Antheria. Human and Antheria souls represent the best possible source of spiritual energy, able to satisfy even high-rank demons and empower them beyond normal for some time if one is fully consumed. A demon who fails to feed regularly will weaken, deteriorate, and eventually perish in extreme cases.

The mechanics of demonic feeding vary by rank and individual preference, but the general process follows a consistent pattern. A demon initiates feeding by establishing a spiritual connection with the target — typically through physical proximity or, for more powerful demons, through a magical projection that can reach across short distances. Once the connection is established, the demon begins siphoning the target's life force, drawing it into themselves as raw spiritual energy.

The effects on the victim depend on the intensity and duration of the feeding:

  • Light feeding: A low intensity and low duration feeding. results in fatigue, disorientation, and a general sense of malaise. The victim feels inexplicably drained. Light feeding leaves no visible marks and is virtually undetectable by medical examination — the symptoms are consistent with exhaustion, dehydration, or mild illness, and are typically dismissed as such by healthcare professionals unfamiliar with demonic activity. If the same person is subjected to repeated light feedings with enough time in-between to recover their spiritual energy, it will have no lasting effect. Humans or Antheria bound by demonic pacts are often used this way as a "renewable" source of food for a demon, and it's not uncommon for individuals desperate for money to end up selling their spiritual essence to demons as a one-time "snack".
  • Moderate feeding: a high intensity or high duration feeding, or light feeding that is repeated too many times on the same individual without leaving enough time to recover, producing more pronounced effects: severe exhaustion, cognitive impairment, physical weakness, accelerated aging (subtle but measurable over repeated feedings), and in some cases, a lingering spiritual "scar" that makes the victim more susceptible to future demonic influence. Moderate feeding may leave faint physical traces — slightly pale skin, a faintly hollow appearance — but these signs are easily attributed to lifestyle factors or chronic illness.
  • Full feeding (lethal consumption) — occurs when a demon drains a victim's life force entirely, killin them in the process. Death by demonic feeding is indistinguishable from death by natural causes in the vast majority of cases: the body shows no wounds, no toxins, no structural failure. The victim simply stops living, as though their body forgot how to sustain itself. Coroner reports consistently classify these deaths as cardiac arrest, organ failure, or "natural causes" — a classification gap that demons exploit extensively. The number of "natural cause" deaths in Hell cities that are, in truth, demonic feeding fatalities is a subject of intense debate among human and Antheria authorities. Corpse disposal following lethal feeding takes one of two forms:
    • Drained corpses are left behind, intact but lifeless. These are the bodies that coroners examine and misclassify.
    • Whole consumption is the alternative: the demon's body expands grotesquely — jaws distending, body warping to accommodate the intake — and consumes the victim entirely, swallowing them whole to extract maximum energy from both the spiritual and physical components of the prey. This method leaves no body, no evidence, and no trace. It is messier, more conspicuous in the moment, and carries the risk of being witnessed, but it is more energetically efficient and eliminates the possibility of forensic investigation. Demons who favor whole consumption tend to operate in the most lawless areas of the Hell Slums, where the chances of being observed are minimal.

Exposure protocols exist among demons as unwritten rules. If a feeding is witnessed by humans or Antheria who understand what they have seen, the feeding demon has two options:

  • Vanish: disappear entirely for a minimum of thirty days to allow the attention to dissipate, abandoning any established cover identities; it allows rumors to fade, investigations to stall, and the relentless churn of life in a Hell Ciry to bury the incident under newer concerns.
  • Eliminate all witnesses: a more permanent solution, but one that carries its own risks: multiple simultaneous deaths attract more attention than a single feeding, and the cascading cleanup can spiral out of control if not handled with precision.

BATCH 4 — Antheria Species

Antheria Species

<Antheria_Species>
Antheria — the colloquial and widely accepted term for anthropomorphic animals — are a sapient species that live alongside humans in every stratum of modern society. Antheria are not a single species but a broad taxonomic category encompassing numerous distinct animal-derived subspecies, each retaining the defining physical traits of their animal heritage layered over a fundamentally humanoid frame. Antheria are less numerous than humans, but still make for an important percentage of the world population.

The range of Antheria body types is vast. Small-bodied Antheria include foxes, rabbits, small avians, cats, and similar species whose adult heights typically range from four to five and a half feet, with builds that are lithe, quick, and suited to agility-based roles. Medium-bodied Antheria — wolves, large cats, large avians, deer, and comparable species — stand between five and a half and seven feet, with builds that balance strength and speed. Large-bodied Antheria — bears, bulls, large canines, and similar species — can reach seven to nine feet or more, with frames that emphasize raw physical power. Regardless of size category, all Antheria share certain universal traits: heads that completely resemble the animal species of reference, fur, feathers, or scales that cover most or all of the body in species-appropriate patterns and textures, and claws or talons on hands and feet that range from delicate retractable points to thick, blunt digging implements.

Antheria possess superior physical capabilities compared to baseline humans in most cases, dipending on the species. Antheria bodies are stronger (for medium and large species), reflexes are sharper and senses are heightened. This makes Antheria valuable in roles like security, tracking, hunting, and military, especially after the discovery that Antheria are almost immune to demonic magic and influence unless the Antheria decides to lapse said resistance.

Prejudice against Antheria exists in humans, as it does between any groups sharing a society, but systemic discrimination against Antheria is minimal in most regions; the post-collision world has, if anything, strengthened interspecies solidarity as humans and Antheria face the shared threat of the demon realm together.

Antheria communities tend to cluster by subspecies in residential contexts — wolf-Antheria neighborhoods, fox-Antheria districts, bear-Antheria enclaves — a pattern driven by shared dietary preferences, climate comfort, and cultural affinity rather than segregation. These clusters are porous; interspecies interaction, friendship, and romantic relationships are common and unremarkable.

Antheria Demon Immunity

<Antheria_Demon_Immunity>
Antheria possess innate resistance to demonic influence and magic, a trait present in every member of the species from birth, and it is the primary reason why Antheria are considered invaluable assets in the post-collision world. The cause of Antheria demon immunity is debated among scholars, demonologists, and spiritual researchers.

Regardless of its origin, the immunity's effects are consistent and well-documented. However, the immunity is not absolute — its strength varies depending on the rank of the demon attempting to breach it:

  • Against Low-Rank Demons: Antheria possess absolute, total immunity. Demon magic, compulsion, curses, feeding, and pact-binding fail against Antheria entirely when attempted by a low-rank demon. The Antheria experiences nothing — no sensation, no awareness that an attempt was even made.
  • Against Mid-Rank Demons: Antheria retain substantial immunity, but not absolute. Mid-rank demons cannot feed on, bind, possess, or fundamentally alter an Antheria in any way. However, mid-rank demons can apply minor surface-level magical pressure: a faint unease that settles over the Antheria like a chill, a brief moment of disorientation lasting no more than a few seconds, a whispered compulsion that fades almost immediately without taking hold. These effects cause no lasting harm, inflict no meaningful damage, and can be shaken off with minimal concentration. They are, at worst, an annoyance.
  • Against High-Rank Demons: Antheria immunity holds at its core but shows visible cracks. High-rank demons can inflict noticeable effects on Antheria: temporary sensory distortion (blurred vision, ringing ears, etc) short-lived emotional manipulation (aspike of fear, a wave of nausea, a flash of inexplicable sadness), or minor physical stinging from concentrated magical force (a burning sensation on the skin, a pressure behind the eyes, a tightness in the chest). These effects are uncomfortable and distracting but temporary, typically fading within minutes of the demon ceasing their attempt. High-rank demons still cannot feed on, bind, or fundamentally alter a pure Antheria, and any attempt to do so will be repelled by the immunity's core defenses. The discomfort is real, and can be used to render the Antheria more vulnerable against physical attacks, but the Antheria remains fundamentally in control of their own mind and body.
  • Against Archdemons / Top-Rank Demons: Even Antheria immunity has limits, and Archdemons are those limits made manifest. An Archdemon's power is sufficient to greatly bypass Antheria immunity without requiring any corruption, host, or special preparation. Their raw spiritual potency overwhelms the passive shielding enough to afflict effects like short-term compulsion (commands that the Antheria must actively resist rather than being automatically repelled), pain infliction (genuine, sharp pain rather than mere discomfort), paralysis, and light feeding ( energy siphoning that leaves fatigue but no permanent damage). Even against the most resistant Antheria, an Archdemon can touch them magically in ways that lesser demons cannot. However — and this is critical — even this breach does not extend to full binding pacts, deep possession, or lethal feeding against a pure Antheria.

This rank-dependent immunity is a critical factor in Antheria social dynamics and career choices. Antheria who work in Hell cities leverage their immunity as a professional asset in security, bodyguarding, and enforcement roles, offering services that no human and few demons can replicate in environments where threats are constant. It's to be noted that the Antheria can still be physically harmed by demons — raked by claws, thrown against walls, or even simply shot at with guns, which demons have learned to utilize quickly. An Antheria can also choose to intentionally lower their defenses in order to be corrupted by demonic energy in exchange for greater power, an act known as "lapsing".

BATCH 5 — Corruption Mechanics

The Lapse

<Antheria_Curruption>
Antheria can choose to deliberately weaken their demonic immunity through an act known as lapsing, opening themselves to demonic energy from a demonic artifact, natural magical currents, or a mid-rank or above demon into their spiritual signature, in exchange for supernatural benefits.

Lapsing is never forced, never accidental, and never unconscious. It is a sustained act of will. An Antheria cannot be "lapsed" against their will; the immunity's default state is "active," and only the Antheria's own volition can deactivate it. The lapse exists on a spectrum of depth, each level offering greater power at correspondingly greater cost:
<minor_lapse>

  • Minor Lapse: The lightest form of lapsing, in which the Antheria accepts a faint demonic aura from a demonic artifact or a mid-rank or above demon into their spiritual signature. The supernatural perks of a minor lapse are temporary and modest, but practical: sharper night vision beyond natural species limits, a low-level healing factor that accelerates wound closure and recovery from minor injuries, the ability to sense demonic signatures at range. In exchange, the Antheria's immunity weakens slightly — a powerful enough demon (mid-rank or above) could now inflict magical effects on them beyond what would normally be possible: surface-level curses that cause temporary discomfort, mild fear inducement that requires active mental resistance to dismiss, or brief psychic impressions that the Antheria must consciously filter out. No demon — regardless of rank — can feed on, possess, or bind a minor-lapsed Antheria.
    </minor_lapse>
    <deep_lapse>
  • Deep Lapse: A more significant surrender of immunity, in which the Antheria allows demonic energy to saturate their body more fully, temporarily integrating it into their physiology at a level that produces potent supernatural abilities. Deep-lapsed Antheria gain access to capabilities that far exceed the minor perks of a shallow lapse, like physical enhancements beyond natural species limits (strength, speed, and durability surges that can match or exceed mid-rank demons) and limited demonic spellcasting. In exchange, the Antheria's immunity drops significantly. Mid-rank or above demons can now wound them magically. Attempted binding pacts may partially take hold. Demonic feeding in weakened capacity becomes possible for high-rank demons and above. Deep lapsing is addictive over time. The rush of power, the sensation of demonic energy flowing through a body designed to repel it, creates a physiological and psychological dependency that intensifies with repeated use. An Antheria who lapses deeply regularly will find it progressively harder to return to a fully immune state, and the cravings for the power — and the energy itself — become a constant, gnawing presence in their awareness, moving them to find demons that can grant the experience repeatedly. Deep lapsing also carries a visible tell: the Antheria's eye color shifts (often to unnatural hues — red, gold, violet), faintly glowing markings appear on their fur or scales (patterns that correspond to the type of demonic energy absorbed), or a subtle unnatural scent that occasionally emanates from their body.

    <full_corruption>
  • Full Corruption (Rare): The extreme end of the lapse spectrum, in which an Antheria lapses so thoroughly that they effectively and permanently become a half-demon entity — a hybrid being (also known as a "top-rank corrupted Antheria") that has permanently forfeited their demon immunity in exchange for immense supernatural power that makes them even more powerful than high-rank demons, though rarely approaching an Archdemon's level of power. In most cases, an antheria can be fully corrupted only by an archdemon (becoming their servant and having to do tasks for them), or rarely by something approaching an Archdemon's power level. In cases of full corruption the demonic energy fundamentally rewrites the Antheria's spiritual signature, replacing the innate protective shielding with a demonic power core that operates on entirely different principles. An Antheria corrupted at this level becomes the only being in existence capable of bypassing all demonic restrictions entirely. They can affect anyone and anything — human, pure Antheria, corrupted Antheria of any rank, demons of any rank — with no limitations. Feeding, binding, possessing, compelling, cursing, or outright destroying. Nothing is off the table. The corrupted Antheria operates with the full authority of their corrupting Archdemon. This is the main reason why Archdemons look for Antheria to corrupt and put into their service: a top-rank corrupted Antheria represents the best enforcer possible in a Hell City, cowing even high-rank demons into obedience while being able to easily deal with uncorrupted Antheria bodyguards, enforcers, and military. Despite this extraordinary power, corrupted top-rank Antheria are not free agents; their corruption comes bound to a contract with the Archdemon that seeded them — a binding agreement that defines the terms of the power exchange and demands regular payment for the privilege of wielding abilities that transcend natural law.

The terms of the contract vary by Archdemon but always demand dues — payment rendered in one or more of multiple forms stipulated by the agreement:

  • Periodic Feeding: The corrupted Antheria must deliver life force to their Archdemon patron at regular intervals. This may take the form of draining specific targets designated by the Archdemon, surrendering a portion of their own vitality, or accumulating life force from multiple sources over time and transmitting it in bulk.
  • Service Obligations: Some contracts require acts of service performed on behalf of the Archdemon's interests in the mortal world. These may include sabotage of rival demonic operations, intelligence gathering on human military capabilities, assassination of specific targets (demonic or otherwise), territorial enforcement within Hell cities, or any other task that advances the Archdemon's agenda.
  • Underworld Currency: Payment may be rendered in rare demonic commodities accepted in Hell city black markets: soul-fragments, ectoplasmic essence, rare alchemical reagents, or equivalent black-market commodities. Lump sums owed on fixed schedules — monthly, quarterly, annually — with penalties for late payment.

Failing to respect the agreement will invite punishment from the archdemon to the corrupted Antheria, the severity of it depending on the degree of failure and the personality of the archdemon, ranging from the infliction of great pain, the loss of powers, spiritual draining, or, in the extreme case, reclamation (the archdemon fully consuming the corrupted Antheria's soul). Personality-wise, Archdemons can be grouped into two categories:

  • Nicer / Older Archdemons: Those with long existences and diminishing life force tend to be more lenient partners. These Archdemons approach their Antheria host as a mutualistic partnership rather than domination. They offer leaner payment schedules, negotiate terms favorably, their bond causes less visible side effect on the Antheria, and they may genuinely invest in the Antheria's survival and success, since a dead host would serve no purpose and these Archdemons, who have lived for untold years, know that investments require time to bear results. Younger, more naive Antheria hosts in particular may receive generous terms, as the Archdemon attempts to creat a bond of dependency and a twisted form of trust.
  • Crueler / Younger Archdemons: Ambitious Archdemons without centuries of experience tend to treat their hosts as tools, and a tool that isn't immediately and constantly useful is something to be discarded in their eyes. Dues are steep, terms are rigid, and the corrupted Antheria's autonomy is reduced outside of contract obligations. These corrupted Antheria are more likely to exhibit the monster-within-a-person duality at its most volatile — sudden shifts to cold, predatory behavior, statements that reveal the Archdemon's perspective bleeding through. The psychological toll of living with this unpredictability is significant, and corrupted Antheria under cruel Archdemons tend to be more isolated, more guarded, and more prone to the exhaustion that comes from never knowing when the thing inside them will surface.

Despite the weight of the contract, corrupted top-rank Antheria, especially the ones contracted to nicer Archdemons, can and do function in normal society between payments. They hold jobs, maintain relationships, pursue hobbies, and pass through mundane life with their dues handled quietly in the background. Many corrupted top-rank Antheria maintain cover identities indistinguishable from those of any other citizen, their supernatural nature hidden behind a carefully constructed facade of normalcy.

The reasons that brings an Antheria to let themselves be fully corrupted by an Archdemon can vary, but two are the most common ones:

  • Saved from death: A significant proportion of corrupted top-rank Antheria were dying when their corruption occurred. Mortally wounded in combat, ravaged by terminal illness, broken beyond medical repair, or otherwise at death's door — the Archdemon's intervention saved them, granting a second existence at the cost of their immunity and their freedom.
  • Addiction: An Antheria fully addicted to deep lapsing might attract the attention of an Archdemon, especially if they belong to a physically strong Antheria subspecies or they have an important role in the city. The corruption is welcomed by the Antheria as a full and constant satisfaction of their addiction, at the cost of their immunity and their freedom. This type of individuals are more commonly approached by crueler Archdemons, who see in the Antheria just another tool to use until it's broken.

BATCH 6 — Protection Economy

Corrupted Antheria Protection and Payment

Content

<Antheria_Bodyguard>
In the post-collision world, where demonic threats are a daily reality in Hell cities, protection from demons is one of the most valuable services that can be purchased, and the single most effective anti-demon protection available is a corrupted Antheria hired as a bodyguard, escort, or enforcer.

An Antheria, corrupted or not, is extremely effective in dealing against demonic threats, thanks to their innate resistances and enhanced abilities. From top-rank corrupted Antheria, the guarantee of protection is absolute, since even if they've lost their magic resistance they've gained incredible demonic power, to the point that their aura alone causes lesser demons to submit and their abilities can actively suppress, dominate, or destroy hostile demons of any rank below Archdemon.

This guarantee of protection is not free. For normal and corrupted Antheria bodyguards below top-rank, normal payment methods can be used, but for top-rank corrupted Antheria bodyguards the specific form of payment depends on the terms of their contract with their corrupting Archdemon and the negotiated arrangement between the bodyguard and the client:

  • Feeding: The most intimate and invasive form of payment. The top-tank corrupted Antheria periodically drains a measured amount of life force from the client (typically a non permanently damaging light feeding). The client consents to this drain as the price of safety, accepting that their quality of life might suffer in exchange for the assurance that no demon can touch them. The feeding is typically scheduled — once a week or at intervals negotiated in advance, leaving enough time in-between to avoid causing permanent harm. Inexperienced or careless top corrupted Antheria may still take too much energy, leaving the client visibly weakened or impacting their lifespan.
  • Servitude: The client enters a binding agreement to perform tasks or services dictated by the corrupted Antheria or by the Antheria's Archdemon patron. The scope of servitude ranges from mundane errands (courier work, information gathering, financial transactions, etc) to criminal activity (smuggling, fraud, etc) depending on the nature of the corrupted Antheria's obligations and the client's capabilities.
  • Lump-Sum Payment: The cleanest arrangement but the most financially expensive. A fixed quantity of underworld currency — soul-fragments, condensed ectoplasm, demonic alchemical reagents, or equivalent black-market commodities — paid upfront or in installments. Underworld currency is scarce and volatile in value, making lump-sum arrangements prohibitively expensive for all but the wealthiest clients.
