My head canon rn: Gonathan G is not human but actually a rat from the sewers in disguise, which is why he tries so hard to be righteous since he wants to be seen as human and escape his humble beginnings. He is attracted to his pearl because she used to feed him cheese when she performed investigation in the sewers. This is also why he fears he would lose his pearl once she regains her memory and recognizes his true identity. However true love and hardwork would prevail in the end: Gonathan G will win the respect of Libstonia and live happily ever after with his pearl.

Gonathan G speeds away on his horse as fast he could possibly can.
He had a haunch that the brief yet beautiful time between he and his pearl, Jyonathan Watson, will come to an end as she regains her memory upon completion of the last dungeon. However the moment his pearl uttered "Rrat!" and the little Gnome boy pulled apart his faceguard still caught him offguard, and broke his heart in a way he could not bear.
For it was the truth. Gonathan G was but a lowly sewer dweller, what Libestians named the Rrats.
Faster! Gonathan G kicked his horse hard and took off his helmet for the first time in many months. He's short on breath and tries to force air down his throat, but the pulsating agony felt like a death grip on his lung. He finally breaks down into tears and let out a whimper, then a moan, and finally an all out desperate cry.
Gonathan G does not remember for how long he cried. When his mind finally sobers up, he found himself back to where it all started. The little sewer where he first met his pearl, long before she had lost her memory. She would bring him delicious cheese; she would talk to him hours on end in words he did not comprehend then; she would dance clumsily with him celebrating another "case solved" or "sewer population charity fund milestones". Gonathan received everything he knew from his pearl, including his name.
"Why does my lovely husband wishes to run away from me?" The familiar voice suddenly appeared behind Gonathan G. Even in the dimly lit sewers, her voice radiates a soft glow that seems to brighten the surroundings.
"My pearl...For Gonathan with a G is but a Rrat...", feeling compelled to answer, Gonathan squeezed out words in a diminishing voice, "Gona...Gonathan with a G does not wish to taint the reputation of his beloved pearl...he does not wish his beloved pearl to be looked down upon by the townfolks."
"Does my husband not know his pearl had sworn to stay by his side til death do us apart? Does my husband not realize his pearl is his to keep forever? Does my husband not realize it is destiny that brought us together?"
"How is it destiny? Gonathan with a G does not understand..."
"Does my dear husband not remember our reunion on the first day I lost my memory? You chased me down across mountains and plains when I lost control of my frightened horse and saved me."
"Gonathan with a G was just lucky to be around. Any righteous man would have done the same."
"Not every righteous man could withstand the temptation of wealth and power, like my dear husband."
"Anything Gonathan with a G knows, he learned from his pearl."
"Please, don't be so stubborn! Look-uh we even have matching color of hair!"
"Gonathan with a G dares not compare his mottled dirty fur with his pearl's blonde loc. It would be like comparing the sewer water to the morning sunshine."
"Oh my silly husband, do you not understand that I love you not for you looks but for your untainted mind?" Jyonathan steps forward from behind and now stands in front of Gonathan, "Perhaps I should remind my husband of the full name I gave him? Gonathan with a G is but a mistranscription. You've always been Gonathan with a golden heart, and you shall remain my husband."
It is now they first looked into each other's eyes. Gonathan sees nothing but infinite fondness from Jyonathan.
"Mayhaps my husband can change his mind and stay with his pearl? Pleeeeeease?"
"But how would the townfolks..."
"Worry not, my husband. For I am sure your kind deeds speaks for itself and they would understand."
Jyonthan extends her dainty hand and pulls Gonathan up from the ground, it's the first time they hold hands as well.
"My pearl...!" Gonathan is about to cry again.
"Oh don't cry! My dear husband." Jyonthan breaks into a big smile, "Now, I know a shortcut leading back to our bathhouse! May..mayhaps my husband wishes to bathe with me together tonight?"
"S..such impure deeds..."
"It's ok! We are married! Remember?"
