Chapter 3: Improvisation
Lecturer: Haha, I suppose it's difficult to be able to improvise right off the bat. I'll give you a minute to compose the character you want to play.
Kathrina: Understood.
Kathrina: (A normal high school girl huh... I'm nothing like a normal high school girl though.)
Kathrina: (And everyone's definition of normal is different anyways... And isn't an actors role to become someone other than themselves?)
Kathrina: (And a role that can appeal to a wide of an audience as possible? I have no idea what this guy wants...)
Kathrina: (Well, they did say that it's fine if you can't do it well. I will show you what a Sirius member is capable of. Sorry if I mess up.)
Kathrina: (The flow of the etude is determined by the start. Let's just think about whats normal for me and what attracts me...)
Lecturer: And begin.
Kathrina: "Ah."
Kathrina: "Rain...?"
Kathrina: "Why today of all days... I don't have my umbrella on me..."
Kathrina: "Wait, this might actually be good timing."
Kathrina: sigh
Shizuka: (The prompt was a normal high school girl, But Kathrina's acting is quite sombre. You would think she would play a more cheerful character like Kokona or something.)
Kathrina: "..."
Shizuka: (She's crying?)
Kathrina: "They rejected me. Even though I loved them so much)
Chisa: I see, a broken-hearted girl huh.
Kathrina: "Fufu, with it raining like this, no one will be able to tell. Although I might catch a cold tomorrow."
Lecturer: Alright, stop. Thank you very much, Kathrina-san.
Kathrina: A-alright...
Lecturer: So you went with a setting where you were broken-hearted. What kind of situation were you imasgining?
Kathrina: Umm... Put simply, there are a lot of ways to intepret "a normal high school girl" since it's an accumulation of all life events.
Kathrina: With sadness and happiness, and on a particular day, it started to rain.
Kathrina: The rain was cold, as if it was crying with me, so I captured that feeling in my performance.
Lecturer: A wonderful perspective. That's true, it's quite hard to grasp what it means to have a normal life. And you were able to understand that in such a short amount of time.
Lecturer: Feel free to return to your seat. Next up is Sasuga Chisa.
Chisa: Here.
Shizuka: Good work, Kathrina. It's rough to be the first up.
Kathrina: You can say that again. Well, it was quite embarassing since I haven't really done that sort of thing before...
Lecturer: Alright, Sasuga-san your prompt is "a tired office worker". The setting is the same raining setting.
Lecturer: And begin.
Chisa: "Hmmm?"
Shizuka: --!
Chisa: "..."
Chisa: "Rain huh..."
Chisa: "Haha. I don't have it on me...)
Shizuka: (She's completely changed the mood immediately. She's exerting much less energy in this lethargic performance...)
Chisa: "Hold on, a change of clothes... None. And I have a business meeting tomorrow too."
Chisa: "Dammit, what a pain... And I can't even light up a cigarette in this rain either"
Chisa: "Ahh..."
Shizuka: (What is this? She suddenly opened her mouth... And is tasting the rain?)
Chisa: "Ah..!"
Chisa: "Crap... That was close. That signpost just flew away..."
Chisa: "Surely this is a sign to call in sick tomorrow..."
Chisa: "I need to get home..."
Lecturer: Alright, stop.
Lecturer: Looks like you're very good with using your body language. Well done with conveying the strong winds.
Chisa: Hehe. Thank you very much.
Lecturer: Tasting the rain was also very amusing.
Chisa: Ahh.. I was super thirsty, so in my world of acting, the rain tastes like juice...
Kathrina: What the hell is that setting...
Shizuka: You're certainly one of the most creative thiknkers out there... But your performance of an office worker was superb.
Chisa: Hehe, I was imagining a superhero movie. Where the middle-aged hero is caught up in some trouble, it's quite a common cliche.
Kathrina: I see...
Shizuka: That's true, we can draw inspiration from other places to enhance our performaces. It's important to have a broad library to recall from.
Chisa: I usually watch movies in the dorms.
Kathrina: I need to start watching performances that aren't just plays...
