A shake to his shoulder.

The young man opening his eyes. A rush of cold air, and a shiver down his spine helping the boy blink away his drowsiness

Through half-lidded eyes he saw (what he could only assume) an angel. Was he dead? Is this heaven?

— No, this is Toronto (unfortunately Canada). Just far off from the road Oliver lived, a public highschool known for their extravagant plays and.. less extravagant actors.

Disappointment washes over him. He’d fallen asleep again, was this was the 3rd or 4th time this week?

A familiar face nudges into his view. “Finally, I was starting to think you were actually dead” The girl paused, leaning back into her seat. “I haven’t even sent out the party invitations..”

Oliver sits up, reluctant to shake the dream from his thoughts just yet. “Sorry,” his voice hoarse. “I must’ve dozed off again, how long was I out this time?”
A different girl, on the other side of him spoke up. “ -Whole period, Is that a new record?”

His attention drifted to Sunnii and Markia, both fully prepared for the evening’s events. The fellow second year- Markia, continued. “If you’re this tired, you need to skip rehearsal.”

Sunnii nodded, her arms folding to her chest. “Yeah, a walking-talking zombie is no help to the stage crew.”

An offered hand by Markia is gratefully accepted. “Nah, I’ll be okay. Besides, I doubt Justin would let me live it down if I missed the 1 play Ive been hyping up for weeks.“

Sunniii popped in, with another nod “That’s true,”
“Then I’d suggest going to the lockers to get dressed,” Markia says. “It’s almost time for the stage crew to gather.”

“- Uhuh. Thanks for waking me.”

Oliver bids the two goodbye and wanders into the school hallways. Yet while his feet are focused, already passing the gymnasium- his head is not.

It started months ago when Oliver so graciously volunteered his friends (against their will) to help out with the school play. His friend Christopher had decided against being in it, and selling popcorn weekly as their way of contributing to the play instead. Oliver (over)worked diligently to do his part, he was always the last to leave, the first to arrive. He had comments and notes for everything- this needed to be perfect. So he needed to take several measures to ensure he stayed awake while working lights today.

Then there was an order for one of the sophomore popcorn buckets, which Oliver fulfilled, seeing as he was the only one really knew his exact way around the school. As he steps to the counter to pass off the final result to the customer, he freezes.

It was an angel? Wearing a radiant smile.. and a stripped shirt? Oliver had been convinced he slipped up and was dreaming again, there was no possible way.

If he was, he didn’t even care. It left him mesmerized as an unknown feeling swelled in his chest.

Taking the order, the customer- angel? thanked him with a voice that seared into his brain. and just as soon as he came, he left without a goodbye.

He wanted to reach out, to shout, to say something, to do anything. but.. he just stood there until a random bumped into him, and when Oliver lifted his gaze, the pseudo-angel was gone.

From that moment on, Oliver’s thoughts were repeatedly interrupted. He frequently caught himself wondering about the mythical creature he saw. He even started to consider his descent into insanity.

Then he began to daydream, which quickly devolved to full on dreams. Most often, than not those dreams were fleeting, simple little incidents,

but the best ones? were the ones like he just had. Where he was entirely in over his head and happy to be so, it did not help him with his sleep problems. If anything it worsened them. Where’s the law that says you can’t purposely daydream just to see someone you’re not even sure is real?

“Oliver! Back to earth!” A voice called from below.

Flinching back to reality, Oliver’s eyes blinked, He’d done well to stay awake, atleast thats what he thought. but oliver was still daydreaming. He’d done it again, got lost in thought during rehearsal.

This play was going to be a total failure if he can’t lock in and just do the stupid lights??

“Sorry,” Oliver murmurs, adjusting the center light to engulf the students on stage.

“What’s gotten into you?” Justin huffs. “I swear your zoning out has gotten worse lately.” Not exactly sure how to go about this discussion, let alone with Justin of all people, Oliver directs his attention to his shoes. “It’s nothing, Sorry”

“Well quit daydreaming and focus, We can’t keep re-doing this scene. Show’s tonight, okay man?”

“Right.” Oliver nodded, “Got it”

It’s a struggle, but Oliver keeps focused long enough to get through the rehearsal, meet up with the others, and offer an opening-night pep talk to the leads.

As He heads backstage to gather everyone, he notices a missing member. The main antagonist in the play. He was always here on time, so this was way out the norm.

It wasn’t long after he noticed the man’s lack of presence that he felt a buzz to his hip.

Oliver pulled out his phone, his eyes scanning over a paragraph sent to the play groupchat.

“*Hey guys! I’m soooo sorry i wont be able to make it :((. My sister got me sick. I already discussed the situation with Ms. D, and she said she was sending someone who’s done this play before in to fill my spot. Wishing you all luck from home!!^”

well fuck.

Oliver let out a sigh, could this night could get any worse? Now a random is coming in to ruin his perfect play? Something he worked so hard on?

“Markia” He calls, “You read the groupchat?”.

“Yea, really sucks.” She replied, more focused on the panel in front, messing around with a few buttons to see which turned off a mic or anything like that. “Have you seen this mystery person yet?”

“No, Not yet, but they better be good. This is frustrating.” Oliver huffed in anger, grabbing a nearby clipboard and scribbling down incoherent sentences.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine, Oli. Things like this happen..” she soothed in response. Her gaze shifted to the tense boy.

Oliver’s attention also shifted, but not towards his dear friend, but to the now opened backstage door.

Into his vision strides his angel, peering past him with eyes he’ll never forget. Everything about him was mesmerizing. Oliver could feel his heart race, like everything in the universe didnt matter. He stared at the angel’s figure, was he getting closer? Was his mind playing tricks on him?No he was definitely seeing things, like the angel’s voice- it was that same melody he heard replay in his head.

“Hello?”

That voice.. still as perfect as he imagined. He’s utterly consumed, lost to his fantasy and there’s nothing he wouldn’t give to drift forever in this moment of bliss.

Hello? Are you the stage director?

The voice- angel? man? repeated.

“Uhh. Yes.” Oliver responded quickly, his body tensed.

“Matthew patel. I’m filling in the antagonist role tonight.” His chest rose as he spoke with pride.

“..Oh. Oh. Yeah.” Oliver took in everything about Matthew. His face, his hair, his scent- his clothes? “The antagonist is a yeti, why are you dressed like a pirate?”

“Pirates are in this year.” Matthew exclaimed, a grin placed so perfectly on his face.

Just as his heart begins to convince him to lean a little closer, to talk more, to do anything else in his sparse time with his mystery man, Ms. D’s voice rang through his ears.

“On in 5, Patel hurry up!”

Confused, he reluctantly looks around, letting his view venture beyond, everyone was here now, all his friends, crewmates, but why?

Oh, That’s right.
He’s at the play
The play he worked hours on with his Teacher.
But then that means?

Peering infront of him, now snapped out his delusion, he hears his teacher call for patel again. Without breaking the mood, Matthew smiles, no. He grins, like those stupid grins guys do in teen movies when they’re over confident and Oliver hated seeing that in movies but for once he didnt mind it.

“I have to go be the best part of this show” Matthew spoke, a chuckle escaping past his lips as he started to walk past Oliver

But he’s stopped.

An hand gripping his arm, pale fingers wrapped around his skin, his brows furrow as he looks up to see oliver and that curious expression studies his face, some hint of recognition sparking in those eyes.

“Have.. have we met before?” Oliver manages to spit out his words, surprised he didnt choke on them.

His chest fit to burst, but Matthew Patel smiles, that same cocky grin.

“In your dreams.”
