"Deku."

"Graduation's in two months, Ochaco! After that we all scatter to our agencies and the window closes. It's now or never." Mina leaned forward, elbows on her knees, and the angle did things to her crop top that made Izuku stare intensely at his notebook. "I'm not trying to steal your man. One week. I give him right back. Mint condition."

"I am a person," Izuku said weakly.

"You're a very cute person," Mina said, not unkindly, "and you're about to be a footnote in my dating history. Embrace it."

Ochaco stood up.

Izuku braced himself. He'd seen Ochaco angry exactly twice in three years, and both times had resulted in property damage. He prepared to dive behind the couch.

"I'm also an adult! We're the same age!"

Ochaco tapped her chin, considering. She did the math the way she did everything—quickly, practically, and with an eye toward the bottom line. Homework was nice. The egg things were nicer. But a whole week...

"Three brunches," she said.

Mina didn't even hesitate. "Done."

Ochaco tilted her head, considering. She tapped a finger against her lips. The afternoon light caught the curve of her jaw, the thoughtful purse of her mouth.

"Three," Ochaco said.

"What?"

"Three brunches."

Mina gasped. "Two brunches is more than fair! Those pancakes are like fifteen hundred yen a plate—"

"Does it change their mass?" Peter asked.

Mr. Beaver stared. "Their... their what?"

"When a two-hundred-pound fawn turns into solid granite," Peter said slowly, "does he still weigh two hundred pounds, or does he weigh what a solid granite statue of a fawn weighs? Three tons?"

Mr. Beaver scratched his head behind his ear. "Well... when the giant Rumblebuffin was took, the courtyard floor cracked under his heels. They say the earth groaned for a mile."

The snow had been falling on Narnia for a hundred years.

Lucy Pevensie knew this not because anyone had told her—though plenty had, the Beavers chief among them—but because she had counted the rings of a felled oak with her own fingers, and there had been a hundred close-pressed rings near the bark, each thin as a wire, each the mark of a year that had never seen a spring.

"A hundred years," she said. "And no one ever stopped her."

"People tried," said Mr. Beaver. He sat by the fire in the snug little den, his paws wrapped around a mug of something hot. "Oh, people tried. There was a rising, oh, sixty winters back. The Fauns and a good number of the Talking Beasts. They marched on the castle."

"What happened?" asked Peter.

"Statues," said Mr. Beaver. "She's got a courtyard full of statues, that one. Anybody who stands against her ends up stone. That's how she keeps her wand—turns you to stone where you stand, and there's an end of you."

Susan set down her own mug very carefully. "Then I don't understand," she said, "why you think four children are going to make any difference at all."

It was, Peter thought, exactly the question he had been trying not to ask.

Mr. Beaver looked uncomfortable. Mrs. Beaver looked at her husband.

"There's a prophecy," Mr. Beaver said at last.

"Of course there is," said Susan.


II.

The prophecy, as it turned out, was not very helpful.

"When Adam's flesh and Adam's bone sits at Cair Paravel in throne, the evil time will be over and done," Mr. Beaver recited. "Four thrones at Cair Paravel. Two Sons of Adam and two Daughters of Eve. That's you four. When you sit on those thrones, the Witch's reign ends."

"Right," said Peter slowly. "But—and I want to be sure I have this straight—how does us sitting on chairs defeat an immortal sorceress with a wand that turns armies to stone?"

There was a silence.

"The prophecy doesn't go into the particulars," admitted Mr. Beaver.

"No," said Peter. "I don't suppose it would."

Edmund, who had been quiet—suspiciously quiet, Peter thought, ever since they'd arrived—spoke up from the corner. "What if the prophecy's wrong? Or what if it just means she'll lose eventually, after she's killed all of us, and some other four children turn up in a hundred years?"

"Edmund," said Susan.

"It's a fair point," said Peter, surprising himself. "It is, actually, a completely fair point."

He stood up. He was thirteen years old and he had never led anything in his life more demanding than a cricket eleven, and he found that his hands wanted to shake, so he put them behind his back.

"Look," he said. "Let's leave the prophecy out of it. Prophecies are just—stories people tell so they don't have to think. I want to know about her. The Witch. Mr. Beaver, you said the people rose up sixty years ago and she turned them to stone. How? All at once? How many can she turn at a time?"

Mr. Beaver blinked. "I—well. One at a time, I should think. She has to point the wand, see. And touch them, near enough."

"One at a time," Peter repeated. "How far away?"

"A spear's length, maybe two."

III.

They did not, in the end, march straight on the castle.

This was Edmund's doing, and it was the moment Peter began to forgive him for whatever it was he was so clearly hiding.

"You can't just attack her," Edmund said. They were three days' march into the thawing wilderness—for the snow was beginning, faintly, impossibly, to soften—and the army had grown around them like a snowball rolling downhill: Fauns and Centaurs, talking Bears and Leopards, a whole regiment of Dwarfs who'd been hiding in the northern caves. "You can't just walk up and attack her. She'll see you coming. She'll have a hundred Wolves out and the Minotaurs and—and she's smart, Peter. She's not a monster. She's a person who's been winning for a hundred years. People who win for a hundred years are good at it."

"You sound," said Susan carefully, "as though you've met her."

Edmund went white.

"I have," he said.

And then it all came out—the Turkish Delight, the promises, the way she'd told him she wanted to make him a King and his brother and sisters his subjects, the way he'd believed her because believing her was easier than the alternative, which was that he was a small, cold, frightened boy who'd been flattered by the first powerful person to pay him any attention.

When he finished there was a long silence.

Lucy went and sat next to him.

"You came back," she said. "You're here."

"I told her things," Edmund said miserably. "I told her you'd be at the Beavers'. I told her—"

"Then you know how she thinks," said Peter.

Edmund looked up.

"I'm serious," said Peter. "Stop—stop flagellating yourself for one minute and think, because you are the only one of us who has actually sat across a table from this woman. What does she want?"

Edmund wiped his face with the back of his hand. "She wants to win," he said. "But more than that—she wants it to be legal. She kept going on about it. About the Deep Magic. There are laws here, old ones, written into the stone of the world, and she's terrified of breaking them, because if she breaks them the whole thing—I don't know—the whole thing comes apart. She told me she was the rightful Queen. She told me about a treaty. She wanted me to come to her willingly. She kept saying willingly. It mattered to her enormously that I came willingly."

Peter and Susan exchanged a look.

"A tyrant," said Susan slowly, "who cares about the rule of law."

"A tyrant," said Peter, "who's afraid of something. Edmund—this is the most important question I've ever asked anyone in my life, so think hard. What is she afraid of?"

Edmund thought hard.

"The Deep Magic," he said. "She's afraid of the Deep Magic. There's something written on the Stone Table—a great stone table, in the middle of Narnia—and she reads it the way a vicar reads the Bible. She believes in it absolutely. Whatever the Stone Table says, she'll do, because she thinks if she ever breaks the law of the Stone Table, she loses everything."

Peter was quiet for a long time.

"Then," he said, "we are not going to defeat her with arrows. Or not only with arrows. We are going to defeat her with the law."


IV.

It took them a fortnight to find a Centaur old enough to remember the wording of the Deep Magic, and another week to be sure they understood it.

The Centaur's name was Glenstorm, and he was very tall and very grave and he did not approve of children.

"You wish to use the Deep Magic against the Queen," he said. "This is dangerous. The Deep Magic is not a sword to be swung. It is the foundation of the world. The Witch obeys it because she must. So must you, if you invoke it. You cannot cheat it."

"I don't want to cheat it," said Peter. "I want to read it. Properly. The way a lawyer reads a contract. Tell me everything it says. Every word. Especially the parts she likes to quote."

Glenstorm told them.

The Deep Magic gave the Witch a right to every traitor. Every creature of Narnia who turned traitor was forfeit to her—was, by the oldest law, her lawful prey, her property to kill. This was the law she loved, the law she quoted, the foundation of all her power; for in a hundred years of fear she had made nearly everyone, at one time or another, betray someone, and so nearly everyone in Narnia had at some time been, technically, hers.

"That's monstrous," said Susan.

"That's useful," said Edmund, and they all turned to look at him, and slowly, slowly, he began to smile the same uncomfortable smile his brother had smiled in the Beavers' den. "Don't you see? I'm a traitor. By the Deep Magic I belong to her. Every word of it. And she believes in it. She believes in it more than she believes in anything."

"Edmund," said Lucy, with dawning horror, "what are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking," said Edmund, "that a woman who believes in contracts can be trapped in one."


V.

The parley took place on the open snow before the army, with the Stone Table on its hill behind them.

The Witch came in her sledge, tall and white and beautiful and terrible, and she stepped down onto the snow and looked at the four children with an expression of vast, amused contempt.

"So," she said. "The prophecy walks. Four little Sons and Daughters of Adam, come to take my throne." Her eyes found Edmund. "And my property. You have a traitor in your ranks, children. That boy is mine. The Deep Magic gives me every traitor. His blood is my right. Hand him over, and perhaps I will let the rest of you flee back to whatever world spat you out."

The army stirred. Peter felt every eye on him.

"No," said Peter.

"No?" The Witch laughed. "You deny the Deep Magic? You, an hour old in this world? You would unwrite the laws upon which it is founded? Do that, little King, and Narnia perishes—fire and water, it all comes undone. Even you cannot want that. Even you must obey the law graven on the Stone Table."

"I'm not denying it," said Peter. "I'm agreeing with it. Every word. The traitor's blood is yours by right." He paused. "I just want to be sure we're reading the same contract. Susan, the wording."

Susan unrolled a long sheet of birch-bark, on which Glenstorm's words had been written in a careful hand.

"'To the Queen belongs the life of every traitor,'" she read. "'His blood is her property, and at the killing of a traitor upon the Stone Table she has her right and the deep magic is appeased.'"

"That is the law," said the Witch. "Now give me the boy."

"In a moment," said Peter. "I want to be precise, you see, because you care about precision—my brother told me so. His blood is your property. Not his death. His blood. The contract specifies blood. Yes?"

The Witch's smile faltered, very slightly. "It is the same thing."

"It really isn't," said Peter. "Susan?"

Susan stepped forward. In her hand was a small crystal vial—the cordial Lucy had been given, emptied and refilled—and beside her stood Lucy, holding a knife, and Edmund, with his sleeve rolled up.

"You can have his blood," said Peter. "All you're owed. Every drop the contract specifies. We'll measure it out for you, here, before witnesses. A traitor's blood, freely given upon the Stone Table." He nodded, and Lucy, very carefully, pricked Edmund's outstretched thumb, and let a single bright bead of blood fall onto the ancient stone. "There. The traitor's blood is upon the Stone Table. Your right is satisfied. The Deep Magic is appeased. It says so. You read it yourself."

The silence that followed was the largest silence Peter had ever heard.

"That," said the Witch, and her voice had changed entirely, "is not what it means."

"It's what it says," said Peter. "And you've spent a hundred years telling everyone that what it says is all that matters. That's your whole power, isn't it? The law is the law. The Deep Magic cannot be cheated. Even the Queen must obey the words graven in the stone. You taught everyone here to believe that. They believed it. I believe it. So tell me, Your Majesty, in front of your own army and mine—is the law the law, or isn't it?"

"Because here's your trouble," he said. "If you say the words don't matter—if you say the contract really means his death, not his blood—then you've just told everyone here that the Deep Magic means whatever the strong say it means. And if it means whatever the strong say it means, then it doesn't bind anyone, and it certainly doesn't make you Queen. Your whole throne rests on the words being the words. But if the words are the words—then we've paid you. In full. And you have no claim on my brother, and no law on your side, and you are standing in a melting field in front of an army that has just watched you lose an argument."

The snow, all around them, was dripping.

The Witch looked at the single drop of blood on the Stone Table. She looked at the birch-bark in Susan's hands. She looked at the faces of her own creatures—the Wolves, the Minotaurs, the Hags—and Peter watched her understand, in real time, that they were watching her too, and that they had spent a hundred years obeying her because of the law, and that the law had just, very quietly, in front of all of them, changed sides.

"I'll have him anyway," she said, and her voice cracked, and she reached for her wand. "I'll have all of you. Law or no law—"

"Law or no law," Peter repeated, very loudly, so the whole field could hear. "You all heard her. Law or no law. She doesn't believe in it after all. Susan—now."

The Witch's wand came up.

Susan's bow came up faster—she had been drawing it the entire time, slow and steady, an arrow nocked since the parley began—and so did forty other bows along the line, every archer they had, all trained on a single white figure two spear-lengths away who had spent a hundred years never needing to fear an arrow because no one had ever dared, because everyone had always believed the law was on her side.

"Drop the wand," said Peter.

"You wouldn't," said the Witch. "The prophecy—you need the prophecy—you need—"

"We don't need anything," said Peter. "That's what you never understood. There's no one coming to save you and no one coming to save us. There's just people, and laws, and choices. Drop the wand, Jadis. You've lost the only thing that made you a Queen. Now you're only a sorceress with a stick, surrounded by people who used to be afraid of you and aren't anymore."

For one long moment the field hung in balance.

Then a Wolf at the Witch's side—one of her own captains—sat slowly down in the melting snow, and would not meet her eye. And then a Faun on her left laid down his spear. And then, all down her ranks, like a held breath let go, the creatures who had served her out of terror and the conviction that she could not be opposed lawfully looked at the boy who had opposed her lawfully, and made their choice.

The wand fell from the Witch's hand into the slush.

It did not turn anyone to stone. It only sank, and was lost.


VI.

They did not kill her. Peter wouldn't allow it, and surprisingly, neither would Edmund.

"You don't execute someone for losing an argument," Edmund said. "If we kill her now, we're just saying the strong do what they like, and then we're no better, and then in a hundred years it's us with the wand. Lock her up. Try her. Properly. With the law."

"You've gone strange," said Peter, "since you came back."

"I've gone careful," said Edmund. "It's different."

They crowned themselves at Cair Paravel, as the prophecy said—not because the prophecy commanded it but because the people wanted thrones to look at, and Peter had begun to understand that people need things to look at. Lucy thought the prophecy had probably been written afterward, by someone who'd watched four children win and decided it must have been fated, because fate was a more comfortable thing to believe in than the alternative.

The alternative was that no one was coming to save anybody. That there was no great lion in the wings, no deeper magic, no one who would set things right if only you waited long enough and believed hard enough. That a hundred years of winter had lasted a hundred years not because of any cosmic plan but simply because, in all that time, no one had thought to read the contract closely and call the tyrant's bluff.

"It's a terrible thought, really," Lucy said, on the night of the coronation, looking out at a Narnia where, for the first time in a century, rain was falling instead of snow. "That it could have ended any time. That all those people stayed statues for sixty years and it could have ended any time."

"Yes," said Peter. "It is."

"Do you think anyone was watching? All that time? Anyone who could have helped, and just—didn't?"

Peter thought about it for a long moment.

"I hope not," he said at last. "Because if there was someone—someone strong enough to fix it, who waited a hundred years and let everyone freeze and only ever turned up at the end to take the credit—" He shook his head. "That would be the worst thing in the whole story. Worse than the Witch. The Witch only did what tyrants do. But someone who could have helped, and watched, and waited?"

"There's no one like that," said Lucy firmly. "There's just us."

"Yes," said Peter, and put his arm around his sister, and watched the spring come to Narnia at long, long last. "There's just us. I think that's better, actually. I think that's much better."

The rain fell, and the snow melted, and somewhere out in the warming dark, the first crocus of a hundred years pushed up through the softening earth—because someone had finally bothered to fight for it, and for no other reason at all.

IV. The View From the Bubble

If you have followed the math this far, a very obvious, very angry question should be forming in the back of your brain:

“Okay, Scott. If the universe is currently rapidly filling up with hyper-advanced, light-speed-traveling cosmic land-grabbers... WHY CAN'T WE SEE THEM?”

Shouldn't the night sky be half-black, and half-glowing-neon-blue with the exhaust fumes of a trillion Dyson swarms?

This is where the geometry gets weird, and where the paper earns its keep. It comes down to the relationship between the speed of light ($c$) and the expansion speed of the Grabby aliens ($v$).

Imagine a Grabby civilization is born 100 million light-years away from us. They immediately start expanding outward in all directions at $0.5c$ (half the speed of light).

As they build their Dyson spheres, the light from those spheres travels toward Earth at the speed of light ($c$). But the physical front of their empire—the actual ships and construction crews—is traveling toward us at $0.5c$.

Because the light is outrunning the physical ships, there is a "warning shadow." There is a specific pocket of spacetime where the light of their Dyson spheres has reached Earth, but their bulldozers haven't arrived yet. If we were sitting inside that pocket, we would look through our James Webb Space Telescope and say, "Holy shit, look at Sector 4, someone turned the Andromeda galaxy into a giant glowing QR code."

So why don't we see that?

Because of anthropic selection. Remember Rule #1: You cannot be born inside a Grabby volume.

If a Grabby civilization was born close enough to us, and long enough ago, for their "warning light" to be hitting our telescopes right now... their actual physical bulldozers would have arrived here a billion years ago and turned the Earth into a parking lot before the first lungfish crawled onto the mud.

The only places in the universe where a Quiet, baby civilization like humanity can successfully wake up and look at the sky are the exact pockets of spacetime that the light of the Grabby Aliens hasn't reached yet.

We look at the night sky and see a totally dark, dead, silent universe not because the universe is dead and silent, but because the silence is the only soil we can grow in. The moment the sky lights up with the majestic, terrifying glow of an alien mega-structure, our cosmic incubation period is officially over.


V. The Hanson Parameters

When you plug the known constants of our universe into Hanson's master equation, the model spits out some very specific, testable "best-fit" parameters for our reality:

  1. Grabby civilizations are extremely rare. The math suggests they spawn roughly once per $10^{30}$ cubic comoving light-years. In standard English: there is probably not another Grabby civilization in our observable universe. The nearest one is likely trillions of light-years away, well past the cosmic horizon.
  2. They expand fast. To make the math fit our current timestamp, the expansion speed of a Grabby civilization has to be somewhere between $0.3c$ and $0.5c$. VI. The Cosmic Slingshot

There is a specific brand of 21st-century melancholia born from the realization that we were born too late to explore the continents, and born too early to explore the stars. We are the Middle Children of History, stuck sitting in a cubicle in Ohio drinking a monster energy drink while a server farm in Virginia uses 1.2 gigawatts of power to generate a picture of the Pope wearing a Balenciaga puffer jacket.

The Grabby Aliens model tells us that this feeling is an optical illusion.

We are not the latecomers to a dying world. We are the absolute, bleeding-edge tip of the spear. We are the ancient precursors, the mysterious First Ones that sci-fi protagonists find carved into the walls of ruined temples three million years from now.

When you look at the Great Silence through Hanson's lens, the existential dread flips its polarity. The universe isn't a dark, haunted house full of traps designed to kill us. The universe is the starting line of the Oklahoma Land Rush, the whistle hasn't blown yet, the vast, virgin plains of the Orion Cygnus arm are sitting right there in front of us, and there is nobody else on our side of the track.

We have two choices.

We can stay a Quiet Civilization. We can solve our local disputes, put a nice high-tax social democracy on Mars, declare the solar system a protected heritage site, and spend the next four billion years writing very beautiful essays about the nature of being until a wall of solid computronium traveling at $0.4c$ sweeps through the Oort cloud and turns our solar system into a server rack for an alien teenager's geometry homework.

Or, we can look at the math, realize that the universe operates on a strict Use It Or Lose It policy, and start putting the tape on the floor.

Epistemic status: Explaining someone else's idea, which I find I understand better after writing about it than before, which is either a good sign or a very bad one. The math is real but I'm going to hand-wave most of it. Corrections welcome.


I.

Here is a fact that should bother you more than it does: the universe is very old, and very large, and as far as anyone can tell, completely empty.

This is the Fermi paradox, and I assume you've heard of it, but let me restate it in the most annoying possible way. The galaxy is about thirteen billion years old. A spacefaring civilization that wanted to colonize the whole thing could do so in something like ten to a hundred million years, even with boringly sublight technology and no physics we don't already have. Ten million years is to thirteen billion years as about three hours is to a year. So if anyone had ever wanted to fill the galaxy, they had three hundred and sixty-five years to do it and they finished by lunch on January 1st, and yet here we are in late December and the place is empty.

Enrico Fermi noticed this in 1950, supposedly over lunch, and asked the obvious question: Where is everybody?

There are roughly nine hundred proposed answers. Maybe life is incredibly rare. Maybe intelligence is incredibly rare. Maybe civilizations always blow themselves up. Maybe they're all hiding. Maybe they're all uploaded into computers and have no interest in the physical universe and are busy doing the alien equivalent of browsing Tumblr. Maybe we're in a zoo. Maybe we're in a simulation. Maybe the aliens are right here but so far beyond us that noticing them would be like a bacterium noticing the concept of Tuesday.

What Robin Hanson has done — and Robin Hanson is the kind of person who does this — is take the question and run it through an anthropic-reasoning meat grinder until something genuinely new comes out the other side. The result is a theory he calls grabby aliens, and it has the rare property, for a Fermi-paradox theory, of actually making predictions.

Let me try to explain it.

II.

Start with a distinction. Hanson splits hypothetical alien civilizations into two types.

Quiet aliens are the kind that arise, do their thing, and never expand across the stars in a big visible way. Maybe they go extinct. Maybe they stay home. Maybe they ascend to a higher plane of existence and lose interest. The defining feature of a quiet alien civilization is that it doesn't change the macroscopic appearance of the universe. You could have a galaxy stuffed with quiet aliens and never know.

Grabby aliens are the other kind. They expand. They colonize. They go out and rearrange the matter and energy of whole galaxies into whatever it is that advanced civilizations want — Dyson spheres, computronium, giant alien parking lots, who knows. The defining feature of a grabby alien civilization is that it is loud: once it gets going, it visibly takes over volume, it expands at some large fraction of the speed of light, and it doesn't stop until it runs into someone else doing the same thing.

Now here's the first key move. You only need a small fraction of civilizations to be grabby for grabbiness to dominate the story of the universe. Imagine a thousand quiet civilizations that keep to themselves and one grabby one that expands forever. Give it time and the grabby one ends up controlling essentially all the territory. So even if grabbiness is rare among civilizations, grabbiness is what eventually fills up the cosmos. The grabby aliens are the ones that matter for the large-scale future, almost by definition, because "expands to fill everything" is a property that tends to fill everything.

And — second key move — we don't see any. The sky is not carved up into expanding spheres of alien engineering. No galaxy we look at appears to have been eaten. This is data. It's not nothing! It tells us the grabby aliens haven't gotten here yet, which constrains how common and how fast they are.

So far this is just the Fermi paradox with extra vocabulary. Here's where it gets good.

III.

I need to convince you of something counterintuitive, which is that we are early.

Not "kind of early." Cosmologically, suspiciously, needs-an-explanation early.

The universe will be capable of supporting life for an extraordinarily long time. Stars will keep forming for trillions of years. Small red dwarf stars — the most common kind — will burn steadily for trillions of years each, vastly longer than our Sun's measly ten billion. If life can arise around red dwarfs (and we don't know that it can't), then the overwhelming majority of all life-friendly star-time lies in the deep future. The universe is, in cosmic terms, a party that just started, and we showed up at 12:04 AM, before almost any of the guests.

This is weird. If you're a random observer drawn from all observers who will ever exist, you should expect to find yourself somewhere typical — in the fat middle of the distribution, when most of the observers are around. Instead we find ourselves shockingly close to the beginning. Imagine being told that humanity will have a trillion-year future spread across the galaxy, and then discovering you personally are among the very first hundredth of a percent of all humans who will ever live. You'd be entitled to ask: why me, why now? Either it's an astonishing coincidence, or there's something about the situation that forces observers to appear early.

(This is the same flavor of reasoning as the Doomsday Argument, and if that one made you want to throw your laptop across the room, I'm sorry, but anthropics is just like that. Anthropic reasoning is the part of probability theory where the chaperone has left the room.)

Hanson's claim is that grabby aliens are the something that forces us to be early. And to see why, we need a model of how hard it is to make a civilization at all.

IV.

This is the part I find genuinely beautiful, so bear with me.

The origin of an advanced civilization seems to require passing through a series of hard steps. The right molecules have to assemble into something self-replicating. Simple life has to become complex life. You need the jump to multicellularity, the development of sexual reproduction, the evolution of nervous systems, eventually intelligence, eventually technology. Some unknown number of these transitions were genuinely difficult — meaning that on a given planet, each one is a fluke that, in expectation, takes much longer than the time available before the planet becomes uninhabitable.

Here's the thing about hard steps. Suppose a step is so hard that it almost never happens in the lifetime of a planet. The only planets where it does happen are the ones where it happened freakishly fast, by luck, leaving time for the next step. So conditional on getting through a hard step at all, you get through it surprisingly early relative to how hard it "should" have been.

Now stack several of these. Earth had to get lucky on step one, then get lucky again on step two before the clock ran out, then again on step three, and so on. The mathematics of this — and it's a clean, elegant result — is that the times between successful hard steps end up being roughly equal, and the whole process produces a tendency for civilizations to appear at a particular characteristic time, with a particular power-law-ish distribution of arrival times. The more hard steps there are, the more sharply the arrivals cluster around a preferred era, and the more "early" arrivers like us look like the normal product of a difficult filter rather than a fluke.

You can even estimate the number of hard steps from the timing on Earth. Life appeared on Earth surprisingly fast after the planet cooled, and then it took billions of years to do anything interesting, and then humans showed up just about as the Sun is getting old enough to start cooking the place. The fact that we cut it close — that we appeared near the deadline imposed by the Sun's lifetime — is itself evidence about how many hard steps there were. (Estimates land somewhere around six, give or take a lot, but the exact number isn't the point.)

V.

Now Hanson assembles the machine. He builds a model with three free parameters:

  1. How hard it is to make a civilization — captured by the number of hard steps (the power-law exponent).
  2. How fast grabby civilizations expand — some large fraction of the speed of light.
  3. How frequently grabby civilizations appear — the base rate per unit of space and time.

And then he constrains these parameters using two pieces of data we actually have:

  • The date. We appeared about 13.8 billion years after the Big Bang. Given the hard-steps model, this constrains when civilizations "should" appear.
  • The empty sky. We do not see any grabby aliens. They have not arrived. This puts an upper bound on how dense and close they can be.

When you turn the crank, the parameters get pinned down to a startlingly narrow range. And out pop predictions. This is the thing that elevates grabby aliens above the usual armchair Fermi speculation. It says concrete quantitative things.

VI.

Here's what falls out.

There are grabby aliens out there right now, and they're roughly a billion light-years away. Not in our galaxy, not next door — but not infinitely far, either. The model says expanding alien civilizations currently control something on the order of a few percent to half of the universe already, in regions whose light hasn't reached us yet. The reason we don't see them is not that they don't exist; it's that they're far away and the universe is expanding and light takes time.

We will meet them — or rather, their expanding frontier will meet ours — in roughly a billion years. If humanity (or our descendants, or whatever inherits the Earth) becomes a grabby civilization ourselves and starts expanding, we'll have hundreds of millions to a billion-ish years of unobstructed growth before we run into someone else's wall. Plenty of time to fill a big chunk of sky, but not forever.

This is exactly why we're early. Here's the resolution to the puzzle from Section III. The grabby aliens are going to fill up the universe. Any planet inside an already-grabbed region never gets the chance to evolve its own independent civilization — the grabbers got there first and rearranged everything. So the only civilizations that ever arise on their own are ones that arise before the grabbers arrive. The grabby aliens are a deadline. They are filling the universe from many directions at near-light-speed, and they will soon (cosmically speaking) leave no room for new civilizations to emerge. We're early because only the early ones exist as independent origins at all. The deadline explains the timing. We're not a freak accident of being born in the first 0.0001% of cosmic history; we're a typical member of the set "civilizations that arose before the universe filled up," and that set is concentrated near the beginning because that's the only window it has.

I want to dwell on how satisfying this is, structurally. The empty sky and our early appearance look like two separate mysteries. The grabby aliens model unifies them. The same expanding civilizations that we don't yet see are the reason we exist now rather than later. The absence of aliens and the timing of ourselves turn out to be two views of one object, the way the Fermi paradox and the anthropic puzzle turn out to be the same shadow cast by the same thing.

VII.

Now let me put on my objections hat, because if I just hand you a clever theory and don't poke it, I'm not doing my job.

Objection one: the hard steps model rests on a small number of data points. We have exactly one example of life-bearing planet, which is the planet we're standing on, and the inference "we appeared near the end of Earth's habitable window, therefore there were many hard steps" is a tower of plausible reasoning built on a single observation. Anthropic reasoning is famously the kind of thing where smart people reach opposite conclusions with great confidence, and I would not bet my house on the exponent.

Objection two: this assumes grabby expansion is a thing civilizations actually do. The entire framework requires that some civilizations expand visibly across the cosmos at near-light-speed and rearrange galaxies. But the whole reason the Fermi paradox is hard is that we have zero examples of this and several plausible stories for why it never happens — maybe advanced civilizations always turn inward, simulate their own paradise universes, and stop caring about real estate. If grabbiness is just never selected for, the model has nothing to chew on. Hanson would say: it only takes a tiny fraction of grabby civs for the argument to work, so you need literally none of them ever to be expansionist, across all of cosmic history, which is a strong claim. Fair. But "expansion is universally abandoned by everyone who could do it" and "expansion is so rare we're seeing the consequences" are both live, and the model assumes the second.

Objection three: it's unfalsifiable on human timescales. "There are aliens a billion light-years away and we'll meet them in a billion years" is, let us say, not going to be settled by a grad student this decade. Though in fairness it does make some near-term-ish predictions — about the statistics of how grabby regions should look as they get close, about not seeing certain patterns in the sky — so it's not purely in the unfalsifiable bin.

Objection four, the one that actually keeps me up: the whole thing leans on taking anthropic self-sampling extremely seriously — the idea that you should reason as if you're a random draw from some reference class of observers. This works beautifully when it works and produces insanity when it doesn't, and nobody has a fully satisfying account of when it does which. I treat conclusions derived this way the way I treat a very persuasive argument made by a very persuasive person at 2 AM: probably I'll feel differently in the morning, but I can't currently find the flaw.

VIII.

Let me step back.

What I love about the grabby aliens theory isn't that I'm sure it's true — I'm not. It's that it takes a question that usually generates pleasant unfalsifiable storytelling ("maybe they're all hiding!") and forces it to pay rent in anticipated experience. It says: given that the universe is empty, and given that we're early, here is the constrained space of possibilities, and here is roughly where the aliens are, and here is roughly when we meet them, and here is why you, personally, find yourself living in the suspiciously young universe of the year 2014 instead of the year three trillion.

And the answer to that last one is a little chilling, when you sit with it. The reason the universe looks young and empty around you is that you are living in the brief, early dawn before it fills up. The night sky is dark not because nothing is out there, but because the things that are out there are still on their way, and we happen to have evolved during the narrow window when a new civilization could still get a foothold. We are not latecomers to a crowded cosmos. We are among the first to a cosmos that is about to get crowded, and our descendants — if we have the kind of descendants that go out into the dark — will spend the next billion years expanding into territory that no one else has reached yet, until one day, far away and long from now, the frontier finds someone coming the other way.

I find that I don't know how to feel about this. It's the opposite of the lonely-universe story we usually tell ourselves. It's not "we are alone." It's "we are early, and the loneliness is temporary, and we should perhaps decide what kind of aliens we are going to be, because someone is eventually going to ask."

Anyway. Hanson's paper is called "If Loud Aliens Explain Human Earliness, Quiet Aliens Are Also Rare," which is the most Hanson title imaginable, and you should read it, and you should distrust everything I've said about it because anthropics breaks brains and mine is no exception.

But if it's right, then the next time someone trots out the dark, lonely, empty universe as a reason for cosmic despair, you get to lean back and say: it's not empty. It's early. Big difference.

You think to yourself: “The universe is practically infinite. There is so much grass. I am the only guy here. Truly, the Great Filter must lie behind me.”

Then, at 12:01 PM on April 22nd, a guy named Jebediah rides a horse over your shell, hammers a wooden stake into the mud three inches from your left eye, and begins constructing a saloon.

This brings us to Robin Hanson.

Robin Hanson is an economist at George Mason University whose primary contribution to human thought is looking at normal, warm, deeply human social phenomena—like going to the doctor, or loving your children—and explaining, with the terrifying, unblinking cheerfulness of an android, why it is actually just a signaling game designed to optimize caloric distribution in the Pleistocene.

Recently, Robin turned his gaze to the Fermi Paradox. The resulting theory is called Grabby Aliens.

It is, I think, the first genuinely new solution to the Fermi Paradox in about twenty years. It manages to be simultaneously wildly optimistic about the human race, deeply depressing about the cosmos, and mathematically ironclad in a way that makes you want to go sit in a dark room and drink a glass of milk.


Part I: The Timing Problem

To understand Grabby Aliens, you first have to understand why the Fermi Paradox is actually much worse than the pop-science articles make it sound.

Usually, the Paradox is framed as a spatial problem: The universe is very big, where are the guys?

But the real problem is a temporal problem. The universe is 13.8 billion years old. It is expected to remain capable of supporting normal, star-orbiting biological life for roughly 100 trillion years.

If you map the total lifespan of the habitable universe onto a standard 24-hour day, the Big Bang happened at midnight. Right now, it is roughly 00:00:11 AM.

We are not just early to the party. We have arrived while the host is still in his bathrobe, furiously trying to vacuum the dip off the rug, wondering why the hell someone is knocking on the door at eleven seconds past midnight.

This creates a massive Anthropic paradox. If you have a lottery with 100 trillion tickets, and you draw ticket #13, you do not say "Ah, a standard random distribution." You say, "The game is rigged, or the machine broke after ticket fourteen." Why are we alive at the absolute dawn of time?

Part II: The Two Buckets

Hanson asks us to divide all technologically advanced civilizations in the universe into two conceptual buckets.

Bucket A contains the Quiet Civilizations. These are the civilizations we usually imagine when we watch Star Trek. They discover radio, they build some nice cities, they solve climate change, they write some very poignant poetry about the sadness of nebulae, and then they either:

  1. Stay in their solar system forever, meditating or playing World of Warcraft 9.0.
  2. Go extinct because somebody pressed the "Create Strangelet" button on the particle accelerator.

Bucket B contains the Grabby Civilizations.

A Grabby Civilization has one defining characteristic: It expands. It does not expand a little bit; it expands at a significant, non-zero percentage of the speed of light (let's say $0.3c$). It arrives at a neighboring star, dismantles the local asteroid belt, builds a Dyson swarm, sets up a server farm, and launches two more probes to the next two stars.

A Grabby Civilization is a cosmic phase-transition. It is an expanding bubble of pure, unyielding re-engineering.

Now, let us play out the geometry of Bucket B.

Imagine a massive, infinite sheet of white graph paper. Every now and then, at a totally random coordinate, a drop of red ink hits the paper. The instant the ink hits, it begins expanding outward as a growing red circle at a fixed speed.

What happens to the graph paper?

Eventually, the red circles touch. They overlap. Within a certain mathematically predictable timeframe, 100% of the graph paper is covered in red ink.

Once a section of the graph paper becomes red, no new ink drops can ever be born there. If a warm little pond on a planet in the Andromeda galaxy is just about to figure out how to bind RNA together, but a Grabby Alien probe flies into the system at $0.4c$ and turns the planet's crust into a giant mirror to focus sunlight onto a computing node, that RNA never gets to write a symphony. The real estate has been foreclosed on.

This brings us to the sledgehammer at the center of Hanson’s paper: The deadline for the Hard Steps is not the heat death of the universe. The deadline is the arrival of the red ink.


Part III: The Anthropic Pivot

Why do we look up into the night sky and see a totally silent, completely un-re-engineered, pitch-black universe?

Because if we saw a Grabby Civilization, we wouldn’t be here to look at it.

By definition, an intelligent observer can only evolve in a pocket of the universe that has not yet been "grabbed." We are the turtle in Oklahoma in 1888. We look around and say, "Wow, look at all this empty space! The universe must be permanently open for business!" without realizing that the only reason we are allowed to sit here philosophizing is that Jebediah’s horse hasn't reached our coordinate yet.

When you plug this constraint into Carter’s "Hard Steps" probability math, the paradox of our early arrival vanishes instantly.

If the universe was going to stay empty for 100 trillion years, the Hard Steps math says we should have evolved in the year 80 Trillion. But if the universe is going to be completely filled with Grabby Alien Dyson spheres by the year 2 Billion Post-Big Bang, then the probability curve gets squished against a hard brick wall.

We had to evolve at 13.8 billion years. If we took 14 billion years, we would have been paved over while we were still Homo Erectus. Part IV: The Output Parameters

Because Robin Hanson is Robin Hanson, he didn't just write a cool sci-fi metaphor; he gathered a team of astrophysicists, plugged the known cosmological constants, our current timestamp, and the spatial distribution of the visible universe into a Monte Carlo simulation, and solved for the variables.

According to the Grabby Aliens model, if you accept the premises, the math spits out several highly specific, deeply unsettling concrete numbers:

If Bucket A (Quiet Civilizations) and Bucket B (Grabby Civilizations) exist, which bucket are we going to choose?

If the human race decides to be the Good Guys—if we decide that expanding across the stars is "colonialist," or "ecologically disruptive to potential microbial life on Titan," or if we just decide to upload our minds into a solar-powered mainframe in the orbit of Mercury and spend the next billion years playing simulated 1990s desktop games—we are placing ourselves in Bucket A.

And the math of Bucket A is an absolute certainty: You get eaten by Bucket B.

If we sit quietly in our solar system being polite, then in 600 million years, an expanding sphere of alien machinery originating from the direction of the Perseus cluster is going to enter the Oort cloud, look at our exquisite, hyper-ethical, perfectly sustainable post-scarcity VR server, classify it as "un-optimized heavy metals," and turn us into a radiator fin.

To survive in a Grabby Universe, you cannot simply be good. You have to be loud. You have to look at the infinite, holy, silent expanse of the cosmos, pick up a wooden stake, walk into the mud, and start building a saloon.

This is the idea that there is some incredibly difficult evolutionary or technological bottleneck—a "Filter"—that almost all life fails to pass. Maybe abiogenesis is virtually impossible. Maybe transitioning from single-celled to multi-celled organisms is a fluke. Or maybe every civilization eventually discovers nuclear weapons, or gray goo, or hostile AI, and accidentally commits suicide.

But there has always been a weird tension in Great Filter discussions.

If the Filter is behind us (e.g., abiogenesis is hard), then we are incredibly lucky, and the universe is our empty oyster. If the Filter is ahead of us (e.g., self-destruction is inevitable), then we are doomed.

Enter Robin Hanson.

What does this mean for us?

First, it totally changes how we should view our place in the cosmos.

For a long time, the depressing version of the Great Filter was that we were doomed to destroy ourselves. But if Hanson is right, the Great Filter is behind us. The fact that we are here, and that the universe is empty but soon-to-be-grabbed, suggests that the "hard steps" of evolution are indeed incredibly hard. We have already won the cosmic lottery by passing those steps.

But it also means we are on a timer.

Right now, humanity is a Quiet civilization. We are sitting on our rock, debating whether it’s worth spending a fraction of a percent of our GDP to build a moon base.

Hanson’s model suggests this is a terminal diagnosis.

If we remain Quiet, we will eventually be absorbed. When a Grabby civilization’s expansion front reaches us, they won’t necessarily be malicious; they will just be efficient. If you are building a highway, you don't hate the anthill in the path of the bulldozer; you just pave over it. A Grabby civilization expanding at $0.3c$ is not going to stop to negotiate a treaty with a species that is still arguing about carbon taxes.

Every time I read Robin Hanson, I feel like I’ve been grabbed by the lapels of my coat and shaken. His arguments have a sort of terrifying, crystalline logic to them. You want to find the flaw in the math, but the math is just a translation of very simple, very intuitive physical principles.

If you believe:

  1. Life can colonize space.
  2. Colonizing life will expand outward.
  3. We exist.

Then you are almost forced to conclude that we are early, the universe is being colonized as we speak, and we will eventually run into the colonizers.

When I look up at the stars now, they don't look quite as peaceful. They look like a vast, empty field in Oklahoma in 1889, seconds before the starting gun of the Land Rush. The sky is quiet, but only because the sound of the horses hasn't reached us yet.

Epistemic status: I have watched maybe nine anime in my life, six of them because a commenter told me to. Take everything here with the appropriate quantity of salt, which in this case is "a lot."

I.

A few months ago a friend asked me why I didn't watch anime, and I gave the answer I always give, which is that it seems like a thing for a particular kind of person who is not me. She asked what kind of person that was, and I realized I couldn't actually say. I had a vivid mental image — something involving body pillows and an encyclopedic knowledge of swords — but when I tried to ground it in any actual person I had met, I came up empty. I was pattern-matching to a stereotype I had never personally encountered. I was, in other words, doing the exact thing I spend most of this blog yelling at other people for doing.

This bothered me enough that I watched some anime. This post is my attempt to figure out what I learned, and more importantly, why my prior was so badly calibrated.

I want to flag up front that there is a failure mode here where a person outside a subculture writes a Grand Unified Theory of that subculture, gets everything subtly wrong, and is gently roasted by everyone who actually knows anything. I am almost certainly going to do this. I ask the anime fans in the comments to be charitable, in the sense of "correcting me politely" rather than the sense of "not correcting me."

II.

Let's start with definitions, because the word "anime" turns out to be doing a lot of work, most of it dishonest.

In Japan, "anime" just means "animation." All of it. The Lion King is anime in Japan. The word, in other words, carves reality at no joint whatsoever; it's a linguistic accident that we imported a term meaning "cartoons" and decided it meant "cartoons from one specific country with a particular aesthetic."

This matters because it means "I don't like anime" is roughly as coherent a statement as "I don't like books from France." You are describing the contents of a shipping container, not a genre. Inside that container is everything from children's programming about trading-card monsters, to four-hour meditations on the firebombing of Tokyo, to pornography, to a beloved twenty-six-episode series about high school girls who do cute things, to a show widely considered one of the great artistic statements about clinical depression of the late twentieth century.

When I said "anime seems like a thing for a particular kind of person," I was making a category error of impressive magnitude. It's the equivalent of looking at the Dewey Decimal System and concluding that "books" are for nerds. There is no they who all like the same it.

But — and here's where it gets interesting — the stereotype persists anyway. Despite the category being enormous and incoherent, both fans and non-fans behave as though "anime fan" is a coherent identity. People get this identity tattooed on their souls. They wear it on T-shirts. This is the part that actually deserves explanation, and I'll come back to it.

III.

First, though, I want to address the visual stuff, because it's the most common stated objection and I think it's almost entirely fake.

The standard complaint is "the big eyes" and "everyone looks the same" and "why are they all white/why do they all have blue hair," etc. I held some version of this objection. Then I noticed that I have no trouble at all with the visual conventions of, say, The Simpsons, in which human beings are yellow, have four fingers, and possess an overbite you could park a car on. I do not look at Homer Simpson and think "this troubles me, as a man does not in fact have a head shaped like a soup can." I have simply absorbed the convention so thoroughly that it has become invisible.

This is, I think, a completely general principle: every artistic medium runs on conventions that look insane the moment you describe them literally, and that become invisible the moment you've seen enough of them. Opera characters sing their dying words for eleven minutes. Shakespeare's characters speak in iambic pentameter and announce their inner states in soliloquy. Comic book characters have spines that would require surgical intervention. None of this registers as weird to fans, because fluency in a convention is the same thing as not noticing it.

The large eyes, it turns out, are doing a specific job: they're an emotional bandwidth amplifier. Animation is expensive, and a face that can convey a lot through small changes around large eyes lets you do more emotional work per frame. There's a whole genealogy here running through Osamu Tezuka, who was explicitly influenced by Disney and Max Fleischer, which means the "big eyes" Americans find so foreign were partly imported from America and then evolved in isolation, like Galápagos finches. The thing you find alien is your own reflection in a funhouse mirror seventy years later.

So when someone tells me they "can't get past the art style," I now interpret this the way I'd interpret someone saying they can't get past subtitles, or can't get past black-and-white film. It's not a statement about the art. It's a statement about the number of reps they've done, which is fine and honest as long as we're clear that's what it is.

IV.

Now I want to talk about why the medium can do things other media can't, because this is the part that actually changed my mind rather than just embarrassing me about my priors.

Here is my model. There are basically two ways to put moving pictures on a screen: you can point a camera at things that exist, or you can draw every frame from nothing. Live-action film is parasitic on reality — it gets enormous richness for free (the texture of a real wall, the way real light falls) but it's chained to what you can physically build, hire, or blow up. Animation gets nothing for free. Every single thing in the frame had to be a decision a human being made on purpose.

This sounds like a disadvantage, and budget-wise it is. But it has a strange consequence: animation has no upper bound on the impossible. A live-action film about, say, the inside of a depressed teenager's psyche during the apocalypse has to either spend $200 million on effects or cop out. An animated one just... draws it. The marginal cost of "a city folding in on itself while a child reckons with whether he deserves to exist" is the same as the marginal cost of "two people talking in a kitchen." Both are ink.

This is why the genuinely strange and ambitious stuff so often shows up in animation, and why so much of it comes from a country that took animation seriously as a medium for adults decades before the West did. America made a category error too: we decided cartoons were for children, which is a statement about a medium that makes about as much sense as deciding paint is for children. Japan never made that mistake at scale, so it has a sixty-year head start on using the medium to talk about grief, war, work, loneliness, and God.

V.

I promised I'd come back to the identity thing, so let's do that, because it's the part that's actually about humans rather than about cartoons.

Recall the puzzle: the category is incoherent and gigantic, yet "anime fan" functions as a tight social identity, complete with in-group signals, out-group derision, and the whole apparatus of tribe.

I think this is a beautiful natural experiment in how identities actually form, which is to say: almost never around the thing they claim to be about. "Anime fan" is not really a statement about a preference for a Japanese animation aesthetic. It's a statement that says something like I am willing to publicly enjoy something low-status and earnest. And that turns out to be a much more socially loaded signal than it sounds.

Consider: for a long time in the West, liking anime carried real stigma. It was coded as childish, as creepy, as the hobby of people who had failed at normal socialization. And here is the crucial dynamic — a stigmatized hobby acts as a costly signal, which makes its fans bond unusually hard. If you and I both like, I don't know, prestige television, there's no cost to that, so it doesn't bond us; everyone likes prestige television. But if we both publicly like a thing that gets us mocked, we have each paid a social price, and that shared price is the raw material of tribe.

This is the same engine, I think, that drives any number of subcultures, and it has a predictable life cycle. Phase one: the thing is stigmatized, the fans are weird and fiercely loyal and they all know each other. Phase two: the thing gets popular (anime is, by basically every metric, going through phase two right now — streaming numbers up and to the right, normal people quoting it, the works). Phase three: the original fans experience the strange grief of winning, in which the thing they loved partly because it was theirs is no longer theirs, and the costly signal stops being costly, and the tribe loses its binding agent.

I've written before about how status and signaling poison things people genuinely love, and anime fandom is almost a laboratory specimen of it. The same enthusiasm that makes a small fandom warm makes a large one insufferable, and there's no governor on the process; it's just Moloch wearing a Naruto headband.

VI.

Let me try to steelman the people who dislike anime, because so far I've spent this whole post gently dunking on my past self, and that's too easy.

The strongest version of the objection isn't about the art style or the subtitles. It's something like this: a lot of anime is genuinely, structurally adolescent, and not in a way that's just snobbery to point out. A real fraction of the most popular stuff is power fantasy aimed squarely at lonely teenage boys, with all the wish-fulfillment and, frankly, the gross sexualization of very young-looking characters that this implies. This is not a stereotype invented by haters. It is a real and large region of the shipping container, and the fandom's defensiveness about it is sometimes exactly as bad as outsiders fear.

And I think the honest response is: yes, and so what. Sturgeon's Law — ninety percent of everything is crap — applies to every medium ever made. Ninety percent of novels are bad. Ninety percent of films are bad. The mistake outsiders make is sampling the modal anime (which is indeed often the teenage-boy power fantasy, because that's where the money is) and concluding the medium tops out there. But you don't judge literature by the airport paperback rack, and you don't judge cinema by the straight-to-streaming dross. You judge a medium by its ceiling, by what its best practitioners prove is possible in it.

The honest version of "I don't like anime" is "I sampled near the mode and didn't like the mode and have decided not to pay the search cost of finding the tail." Which is a completely reasonable allocation of finite leisure time! I just want it stated as what it is — a decision about search costs — rather than dressed up as an aesthetic verdict about an entire medium, the same way "I don't read" is fine but "books are bad" is not.

VII.

I want to close with the thing that actually surprised me, which is sincerity.

One of the diseases of being a modern educated Western adult is that we have made irony into a kind of full-body armor. We can't say we love something without an exit hatch, a little ironic distance, a "haha, well, you know, guilty pleasure." We pre-emptively mock the things we care about so that no one can mock them first. It is exhausting and I think it makes us a little dead inside.

The thing about a lot of anime — even some of the dumb stuff, especially some of the dumb stuff — is that it is shamelessly, defenselessly sincere. It believes in friendship without scare quotes. It thinks effort and loyalty and trying very hard at something are good, actually, and it will say so directly to your face for twenty-six episodes without once winking at the camera to reassure you that it knows it's being corny. The first time you hit this it's almost physically uncomfortable, like the embarrassment you feel watching someone dance with their whole heart. And then — at least for me — the discomfort flipped into something closer to relief. Oh. You're allowed to just mean things.

I think this might be the actual function the medium is serving in the culture right now, the reason it's escaping containment into the mainstream. We have built an entire civilization that is too cool to want anything earnestly, and into that civilization arrives a giant, incoherent, ninety-percent-crap shipping container, ten percent of which is willing to look you in the eye and tell you that it matters whether you become a good person, with no irony at all.

I was wrong about who that's for. It turns out it's for me, and probably for most of you, and the body-pillow stereotype in my head was just a story I told myself to avoid finding out.

I still don't know anything about swords, though. Some priors survive.

But what if we applied this to narrative art?

If you want to understand anime—not as a collection of Japanese cartoons, but as a massive, self-organizing, global cultural phenomenon—you have to understand it as the most successful, highly optimized supernormal stimulus for human empathy and narrative satisfaction ever constructed.


II. The Neotenic Feedback Loop

Let us begin with the visual style itself.

The standard critique of anime from outsiders usually goes something like this: "Why are their eyes so big? Why don’t they look Japanese? Why do they look like weird, mutated porcelain dolls?"

The answer is neoteny.

Humans are hardwired to love babies. We have deep-seated, evolutionary wiring—often called the "baby schema" (Kindchenschema)—that makes us feel protective, affectionate, and trusting toward creatures with large eyes, high foreheads, small noses, and round faces. It’s why we find puppies cute but ignore baby lizards.

Early Disney animators understood this, gradually making Mickey Mouse’s eyes larger and his head rounder over decades. But Disney was eventually constrained by Western artistic traditions of realism and, later, 3D modeling.

In post-war Japan, Osamu Tezuka (the "God of Manga") looked at Bambi, saw the power of those giant, expressive eyes, and realized he could strip away everything else. He didn’t need realistic anatomy. He just needed the emotional transmitters.

Over the next fifty years, the Japanese manga and anime industries engaged in a hyper-competitive, rapid-iteration genetic algorithm.

In the West, animation was historically a top-down affair dominated by a few massive studios (Disney, Warner Bros). In Japan, manga is incredibly cheap to produce. Anyone with a pen and paper can publish. If a manga is popular, it gets serialized; if it stays popular, it gets a light novel; if it sells out, it gets animated.

This is a brutal Darwinian survival-of-the-fittest engine. The feedback loop is instantaneous. Every week, millions of consumers vote with their yen.

What survived this evolutionary pressure?

Not "realistic" drawings. What survived were visual archetypes that maximized emotional bandwidth while minimizing production costs. The eyes became massive reservoirs of expression—capable of shifting from starry-eyed wonder to absolute despair in a single frame. The noses shrank to mere dots. The hair became highly stylized, color-coded signifiers of personality (the blue-haired quiet girl, the spiky-haired hot-blooded hero).

Anime characters are the red knitting needles of human social perception. They bypass the "uncanny valley" by abandoning realism entirely, delivering a pure, unadulterated dose of social and emotional signaling directly to the brain's fusiform face area.


III. Object-Oriented Storytelling

This optimization isn’t just visual; it is deeply structural.

If you watch Western television, characters are often complex, muddy, and inconsistent. Don Draper is a brilliant ad man, but also a miserable alcoholic, but also a loving father, but also an existential void. To understand Don Draper, you have to run a complex, high-latency simulation of 1960s societal expectations and personal trauma in your head. It is cognitively expensive.

Anime solved this by inventing object-oriented storytelling.

In software engineering, object-oriented programming allows you to create "classes" with predefined properties. If you instantiate a class called Dog, you don’t need to write code explaining that it has four legs and barks; the class comes with those properties built-in.

Anime does this with human personalities through the dere taxonomy.

Instead of building a character from scratch, an anime creator can instantiate a Tsundere (harsh on the outside, loving on the inside). The moment she crosses her arms and says "It’s not like I did this for you or anything, b-baka!", the audience’s brain instantly loads the entire library of associated traits. We know she is insecure, we know she has a hidden heart of gold, we know her romantic arc will involve gradual softening.

Other classes include:

  • Yandere: Sweet and loving, but psychopathic and violently possessive.
  • Kuudere: Cold, cynical, and emotionless, but slowly warming up to the protagonist.
  • Dandere: Quiet, shy, and socially anxious, but fiercely loyal.

To a Western literary critic, this looks like lazy stereotyping. To a systems theorist, this is an incredibly elegant coordination protocol. By using highly legible, standardized character templates, anime frees up cognitive bandwidth. The viewer doesn't have to spend energy figuring out who the characters are; they can immediately focus on how these archetypes interact within the specific, often bizarre logic of the setting (e.g., “What if the Tsundere and the Kuudere were forced to pilot a giant biological robot together to fight angels?”).

This categorization has reached such a high level of precision that it has leaked into the real world. Internet subcultures now routinely classify real-world people and other media characters using these Japanese taxons. We have mapped the human soul, and it turns out to have about eight major archetypes, all of them codified by teenagers in Akihabara in the late 1990s.


IV. The Friendship Deficit and the Hikikomori Sanatorium

There is a dark side to the supernormal stimulus.

If Tinbergen’s chicks are pecking at the red needle, they aren't eating real food. If we are spending all our cognitive empathy on synthetic characters, we might not have enough left over for real, messy, low-yield human relationships.

Japan is famous for its hikikomori—young people, mostly men, who completely withdraw from society, locking themselves in their rooms for years at a time. The conventional narrative is that anime and video games cause this withdrawal.

I suspect this gets the causality backward.

In a hyper-dense, hyper-competitive capitalist society like Japan (and increasingly, the US), the cost of social participation has skyrocketed. The housing market is hostile, the job market is precarious, and the social rules are an invisible minefield of potential status loss.

If you try to form a real-world relationship, you face a high probability of rejection, emotional pain, and financial strain. It is a high-risk, high-cost endeavor.

Anime acts as a highly effective palliative technology for this loneliness.

Consider the "Iyashikei" (healing) genre—shows like Aria or Yuru Camp. These are shows where literally nothing happens. Cute girls go camping, drink hot cocoa, and look at Mt. Fuji. There is no conflict. There is no villain.

To the uninitiated, this sounds like the most boring television imaginable. But to a stressed-out Tokyo salaryman who just worked a 14-hour shift under an abusive boss, it is a warm bath for the nervous system. It is a simulated environment of pure, unconditional safety.

In his book Otaku: Japan's Database Animals, the philosopher Hiroki Azuma argues that modern anime consumers have moved past traditional "narrative consumption" and into "database consumption." They do not care about the grand meaning of life; they care about consuming specific aesthetic elements—a particular hairstyle, a voice actor's cadence, a specific character trope—that trigger immediate, reliable dopamine and oxytocin releases.

It is a form of self-medication. If the modern world is an alienation machine, then anime is the life-support pod.


V. The Escalation of the Shonen Engine

But what about the other side of anime? The loud, hyper-violent, world-ending battles of Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, or Attack on Titan?

This is the Shonen Engine, and it operates on a different, but equally powerful, evolutionary mechanism: the escalation of stakes.

Humans are wired for narrative arcs of struggle and triumph. In traditional mythology, this was the Hero’s Journey. But traditional mythologies were constrained by oral tradition and physical reality.

In anime, the only constraint is the budget of the animation studio (and sometimes not even that).

In Dragon Ball, the initial goal is to win a local martial arts tournament. By the end of the series, characters are literally punching each other through planets and fighting the Gods of Destruction. This is "power inflation" or "shonen power creep."

Why does this happen? Because once the viewer’s brain has adapted to a certain level of stakes and visual spectacle, that level becomes the new baseline. To elicit the same emotional high—the same feeling of "triumph against all odds"—the next arc must escalate the stakes.

It is the same principle as drug tolerance. You need a higher dose of spectacular animation and cosmic stakes to get the same hit of dopamine.

But anime does something clever here that Western media often fails to do. It grounds this absurd, cosmic escalation in deeply resonant, primal moral frameworks. Almost every major shonen anime is built on a trinity of values: Effort (Doryoku), Friendship (Yuujou), and Victory (Shouki).

No matter how ridiculous the power scaling gets, the core message remains stubbornly, almost naively, wholesome: If you work hard enough, and if you protect your friends, you can overcome any obstacle.

In a cynical, post-modern West where our own narratives are often deconstructive, self-loathing, or deeply ironized, this unironic embrace of heroic striving feels incredibly refreshing. It’s why a generation of young men who feel completely alienated by modern institutions are finding their motivational frameworks in characters like Naruto Uzumaki or Izuku Midoriya. It’s a direct, unmediated injection of the Hero's Journey, free from the paralyzing self-consciousness of modern Western academic curation.


VI. Conclusion: The Great Filter of Aesthetics

So, what is anime?

It is not a genre. It is not even a medium.

Anime is what happens when you subject human narrative and visual art to fifty years of intense Darwinian selection in an environment of cheap production costs and high technological connectivity.

It is an optimized cognitive hack. It takes our deepest evolutionary desires—for cute babies, for clear social signals, for heroic struggle, for safe communities—and packages them into highly legible, stylized, 24-minute episodes.

Is this good?

I am of two minds. On one hand, there is something deeply beautiful about it. We have built an artistic technology capable of generating profound joy, comfort, and motivation out of nothing but ink, pixels, and voice acting. I have seen people pull themselves out of deep depressions by clinging to the simple, unbending optimism of shonen protagonists.

On the other hand, Tinbergen’s herring gull chicks eventually starved to death pecking at the red knitting needle.

The real world is messy. Real partners do not have the legible, comforting predictability of a Tsundere. Real friendships require navigating awkwardness and conflict without the guarantee of a triumphant montage. Real-world striving is slow, boring, and often ends in failure rather than "Victory."

As anime continues to globalize, and as the algorithms that distribute it become even more optimized, the temptation to retreat from the messy, low-resolution real world into the high-yield, hyper-optimized simulated world will only grow.

The challenge of the 21st century will not be surviving scarcity. It will be surviving abundance. And anime is the advance guard of that abundance—a beautiful, glowing, highly-engineered siren song, calling us to leave the stormy seas of reality and rest forever on the shores of the perfect, animated dream.
