Origins

Toto's early history which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic growth. In the beginning, Toto manufactured goods to meet the demand for modern, new urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s the company began expanding overseas to take advantage of sales and new markets. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.

In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus to research and development of household appliances that use water. It also improved its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and boost profits. In addition to toilets Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than typical models.

The first museum of the company opened in the year 2015 It has exhibits on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution and its group companies (all having to do with ceramics) and the historical background of plumbing and products like bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also includes a bathroom with a WASHLET toilet as well as other toilet-related innovations.
