This goes from fairly coherent to actual rambling pretty quickly, so, don't be surprised for the sudden shift in tone.

Creation

Squid Game is a South Korean dystopian survival thriller series that was initially written in 2009 by Hwang Dong-hyuk, where he toyed with the idea of characters playing a survival game to win money to get out of debt as he was in debt at that time after trying to get an investment for a script he wrote in ~2008 for a different movie.

Dong-hyuk tried to sell his story to a lot of other producers and actors, but each time he was told it was too unrealistic and just generally graphic, so for 10 years, he put the script for Squid Game to the side to work on other films. In 2018, the co-CEO of Netflix was talking about wanting more overseas productions that would be successful. Dong-hyuk brought his script up to the Seoul division in Netflix, and a content officer for Netflix noted on his talent from his other films and said that they Needed it for the service.

In 2019, it was announced that it was going to become an original series. Because of COVID impacting the economy, it made the story a lot more realistic compared to how it was a decade ago. The concept for the film was then turned into a nine episode series, which was a lot more than what he had written for a movie that was Initially going to only be 120 minutes long, so he had to work with the others and used the time to further expand on the relationships between the characters and their stories.

Netflix originally was going to name it Round Six instead of Squid Game because that was going to make more sense to non-Korean viewers as Squid Game is a Korean's children game (just called Squid (오징어)). Dong-hyuk kept pushing for it to be called Squid Game, saying the more cryptic nature behind it would draw in more viewers to see what it's about. It was initially supposed to be 8 episodes but the last episode was a lot larger than he planned so it was split into two. Season one was released on the 17th of September in 2021. Season two was released on the 26th of December in 2024. Season three will be released on the 27th of June, 2025.

Episode One

The show is centered around Seong Gi-hun, a divorced father and gambling addict who's in a large debt due to his addiction. When his mother leaves home to go to her job, he steals her debit card and takes money from it at the bank. He's with his friend, Park Jung-bae, and gambles the money his mother gave him (and the money he stole) for his daughters birthday on horse racing. After he won ₩4.5mil, he calls his daughter, asking what she wants for her birthday, and he's then spotted by the loan sharks he owes money to.

He tries to run away, but he bumps into Kang Sae-byeok, and loses his money. Sae-byeok steals the ₩4.5mil, and Gi-hun is cornered in a bathroom. The loan sharks threaten to take his organs if they aren't paid in full by next month, and make him sign a contract with his own blood. With the money he has left, Gi-hun takes his daughter out to eat and gives her a prize he had won, which they both think is a gun, and then turns out to be a lighter. Gi-hun is upset that he can't give her as much as her stepdad can, despite the reassurance she gives him.

He meets The Recruiter in a subway/train station. Recruiter asks Gi-hun if he wants to play ddakji, which is a game where players try to flip their opponents folded paper tile with their own, in order to win ₩100k if Gi-hun could flip his tile. If Recruiter managed to flip Gi-hun's, then Gihun owed him ₩100k. Gi-hun agrees, despite having no money, and he loses. Because he has no money, Recruiter says that every slap he gives Gi-hun, he'll take off ₩100k from their deal. It goes back and forth, Gi-hun ends up fairly bruised, and he eventually gets the money. Recruiter gives Gi-hun a card, and tells him if he wants to earn more money, he can simply join the games.

Gi-hun thinks it's a trick, and Recruiter reveals that he knows Gi-hun's identity, history, and his debt of a total of ₩415 million. Gi-hun is shocked, but is distracted by the money and returns to his neighborhood, where we first get Cho Sang-woo's mother, who brags about Sang-woo being abroad on business. Gi-hun makes a petty comment on Sang-woo only being so successful because Gi-hun took him to school, and after buying mackerel from her, heads home.

He pays his mother back what he stole from her, his mother asks how he got the money and Gi-hun gives a vague answer. His mother then informs him that his daughter, his ex-wife and his exes current husband would be moving to the US, and that Gi-hun needs to show he's financially responsible enough to take care of his daughter, because if his daughter leaves Korea, she's worried she may forget how to speak Korean all together.

Gi-hun tries to sleep, but he's an overthinking king so instead he calls the number and signs up for the games. He goes to an address, gets picked up by a pink guard who asks to confirm his identity with the password. The van door opens, Gi-hun gets inside, yaps a bit, and then he gets gassed and he passes the fuck out!!!! The driver takes them to The Game Site™️. Gi-hun wakes up to some banger music (classical) and he's in a room with 455 other people in all the same clothes, aside from the different numbers stating who they are. The players are being watched by the guards and The Frontman 🤤. Gi-hun goes down, hears Oh Il-nam counting and he's like "Whatcha doin?" and Il-nam says he's counting and tells Gi-hun to shush because he's distracting and Gi-hun sees he's player 456 after. Il-nam says he already knows how many players they are but he's counting anyway because the doctor said its good for dementia and he's gonna die soon because of a brain tumor.

There's a fight between Sae-byeok and Jang Deok-su, aka her former mentor and an evil ass gangster. Sae-byeok and Deok-su are arguing over why Sae-byeok left and she's like "'Im Independent brah" and Gi-hun recognizes Sae-byeok as the girl who stole his money so he's all pissed off even though he saved her from Deok-su and he demands the money back. Deoksu kicks his ass and they get into an argument and then Gihun introduces himself. Deok-su says he has unfinished business with her and Gi-hun says he does too, and Deok-su asks what their relationship is. Gi-hun asks what he has against her and then says that Deok-su is basically an abusive misogynist who takes advantage of women (#yeah #heis) and then he asks Deok-su if he told Sae-byeok to steal his money. Deok-su tries to hit him, Gi-hun dodges, and then he starts essentially begging for help LMFAO

The door to the dormitory opens up and there are guards who says they're gonna play 6 games in 6 days and the winner will get The Prize Money™️. Some guy asks why they should believe them since they took their stuff and knocked them out and the guard is like "trust me bro we aren't lying we only did that to keep all this a secret you can have your stuff back after the games are over" (lol....) and then someone asks why they wear masks and they're like "to keep our identities a secret to make everything fair for everyone!"

sang-woo who's suddenly in the games is like "no i don't really trust you because you kidnapped us" and he's like "you're making excuses so nobody knows about the illegal stuff you're doing here so give us a reason to believe you" and then the manager says sang-woos full name & his number and shows a video of him and reads off his debt, then the manager does this for5 other people. and then he's like "you're all living with debts you cant pay off so do you wanna be a poor piece of trash or take advantage of this"

ali abdul asks what games they're gonna play, the manager says that it'll be announced when they enter the game rooms. g-ihun asks how much money there will be and a piggybank comes down and that after every game there will be money in the piggybank and the amount will be revealed after the first game and that if they don't wanna play they should speak now or forever hold their peace.

everyone wants to play because duh who wants to be poor and then they all sign a consent form and end up taking pictures that start to show up on the floor with the front man. then they all go through a bunch of staircases to the red light green light room because that's the first game! there's no room and the walls are painted and there's a huge doll at the other end and then a voice is like "if you don't cross the line in 5 minutes you lose, if you get caught moving, you lose."

frontman gets a call, answers it in english and says that the first game can start and then he sits on a leather couch and watches it on a huge tv because he's a BITCH (🤤) people die and the only one who dgaf is il-nam who keeps going despite everyone else being frozen. sae-byeok threatens deok-su. frontman is watching this and drinking whiskey with "Fly me to the moon" on in the background. the players who didn't cross the line in time are killed. L. its then revealed they're all on an island as the roof of the thing closes up
