steve reich ROCKS
hi my name is rust and i'm a percussionist from uruguay. here is where i nerd it out
resources
5 rules. there are only 5 rules
- practice. your. rudiments
- include "beginner" material in your warmups (like stick control or syncopation) even if it's boring
- play with a metronome AND count out loud
- practice all exercises you do in all dynamics. master them
- you must not be physically tense. if you are stop and evaluate whatever is making you uncomfortable
other fun stuff i should like to do
- learn to sight read. practice it often
- transcribe rhythms you hear. Yes. In a score. with.. figures! wow. No "ba dum-dumdum ba" in random pieces of paper you're never going to look at again
- record yourself playing (as painful as it is) and listen to it
- think out how you're going to distribute your time between instruments depending on your priorities. ideally, you should strive for a balance in your study
- i know you're probably an awkward socially incompetent nerd like me but studying with other percussionists is SO productive
