What's Preternatural?
Click here to download Preternatural. Or use the Chub entry.
Preternatural is an AI adventure card for chat frontends like SillyTavern or Chub. You and your sister Hazuki have superpowers: hers indirectly makes her invulnerable, yours is up to you (or pick from included ideas). Together you investigate strange happenings that others write off as rumors. This time, a classmate is being followed at night by something no one can see. Monogatari's atmosphere and arc structure, Worm-inspired superpower fights.
This is a prewritten story arc, with a lot of reactivity and player freedom baked in. It's built and tested to always stay on track with the supported models, using many failsafes. Expect 35-45 bot messages for a full run.
Featuring background art from Monogatari, a Japanese hip-hop themed OST, and full-body character profile images. Click here to view what Preternatural messages look like.

Supported models
I've tested and can vouch for the models:
- Fable, Opus >=4.1, Sonnet 4.6, GPT 5.6 Sol/Terra/Luna, Gemini >=2.5 Flash/Pro
- Gemma 4 31B (free on Google AI Studio! Can also be run on 24GB VRAM.)
- Kimi K2.6 (Pacing might be a bit off in some parts, but it works. No longer available for free on NIM.)
- Kimi K3 (K3's writing is possibly the best for this card, it just occasionally forgets embeds, but nothing game-breaking. If it forgets the Objective code block, re-gen.)
- GLM 5.2 (Works very well, you'll just have to ignore that it'll keep reposting the profile images and that objectives will tend to progress a bit too early, but it's just a display issue.)
- Deepseek 4 Pro (Pacing will be stiff and the objective block will only be inserted when updated, and sometimes behave slightly wrong, but it's just a display issue.)

Frontend settings
Any chat frontend works, just ensure you use 50k+ context, High reasoning, max response length is >=2000 tokens, and your settings allow external media and HTML rendering. The relevant SillyTavern settings are (keep them unchecked):
=>
SillyTavern users are recommended to use a simple/stock prompt preset, as intricate instructions inside custom prompt sections may conflict with Preternatural's. You can switch back to the ST stock preset or download this stock-like ST preset.

Extras
Connection with Tomoyo
This card is a spin-off/prequel of Tomoyo, in a different genre.
- Tomoyo is a dating sim with emotion sprites, PC-98 backgrounds, and a vaporwave OST.
- Preternatural is a Monogatari-style adventure arc with full-body character art (no emotion sprites), Monogatari backgrounds, and a Japanese hip hop OST.
- Hazuki, the player's little sister, is mentioned in passing in Tomoyo, and is the player's investigation partner in Preternatural. Conversely, Tomoyo is mentioned in passing in Preternatural.
Why no lorebook mechanics?
- Current-gen models are smart enough to not get confused by long defs.
- I wanted to explore how much adventure cards can achieve with simple, well-organized defs, and a lightweight objective system. Feel free to use Preternatural as a skeleton for your own adventure cards.
- Using a lorebook is actually more expensive than not using one if you factor in prompt caching.
- This can be worked around by putting lorebook entries after the prompt, but this would be one of multiple lorebook options users would have to set manually, which I didn't find worth the tradeoff.

All of the background images are Monogatari screenshots, except the antique store which was generated with gpt-image-2. Most of the screenshots had their time of day changed, and some background characters removed, with gpt-image-2.
